Thrilling final minutes: Two own goals save Arsenal from embarrassment

0

When the league leaders host the bottom team, who had lost their last nine games, you would expect a landslide victory. There were reasons why that didn’t happen. It took two own goals to secure Arsenal’s victory over Wolves – including some thrilling final minutes.

Saliba, Timber, Eze, Rice, and Saka started for the league leaders in place of Nörgaard, Lewis-Skelly, Ödegaard, Merino, and Madueke (all on the bench), based on Gunners coach Mikel Arteta’s lineup in the 3-0 win in Bruges.

For Wolves, Hoever, Arias, and the injured Bellegarde were replaced compared to the 1-4 defeat to Manchester United, their ninth defeat in a row. New to coach Rob Edwards’ lineup were Doherty, Joao Gomes, and former Leipzig and Hamburg player Hwang.

Hwang gets around the red card

How could it be otherwise: Arsenal had the ball almost throughout and dominated their opponents. The statistics showed 70 percent possession at the end of the game, but this rarely resulted in danger. When it did, it was headers that the league leaders created, for example through Timber (8th minute), Rice (18th minute) and Gabriel Martinelli (34th minute).

At times, it had handball vibes: Arsenal rotated, tried things out, worked hard around the box, but Wolves defended and shifted diligently. And they countered dangerously once: Hwang ran at full speed towards Raya, but he stretched out and held on to the ball (28′).

Even after the break, the previously luckless favorites from London remained committed. Gabriel Martinelli’s shot from a tight angle narrowly missed the far post (57′), and shortly afterwards Wolves striker Hwang was lucky that his sliding tackle with his studs up against substitute Lewis-Skelly did not result in a red card (60′).

Former Cologne player against former Leverkusen player in important header duel

This was followed by two good moves from Rice, a powerful free kick that went just over the bar (66th minute) and a saved shot from the second row (69th minute), before teammate Saka took the lead. His corner surprised Johnstone, who missed the ball. Instead, it bounced off the back post, then off Johnstone’s shoulder and into the goal (70′).

Shortly before the end, the visitors made an offensive substitution and actually scored the much-celebrated equalizer in the final minute: Former Cologne player Arokodare won a header against ex-Leverkusen player Hincapie and nodded the ball in (90′). However, it wasn’t enough for a hard-fought point, as Saka still had a dangerous cross up his sleeve. Mosquera, under pressure from Gabriel Jesus, deflected it into the net to make it 2-1 for Arsenal (90’+4). It was the second own goal of the evening—and the biggest possible blow for the underdogs, who have now lost ten games in a row.

Next Saturday, Wolves will host Brentford FC at 4 p.m., while Arsenal FC will travel to Everton FC on Sunday evening at 9 p.m.

Slot on Salah’s future: “The actions speak for themselves”

Before leaving for the Africa Cup of Nations, Mohamed Salah was able to show himself once again in the Liverpool FC jersey—and promptly played a decisive role in the victory against Brighton. Afterwards, coach Arne Slot and Hugo Ekitiké commented on the Egyptian, who had dominated the headlines so much during the week.

Will the saga surrounding Mohamed Salah come to an amicable end after all? The scenes that unfolded on the pitch after the 2-0 win against Brighton can be interpreted in different ways. Was it simply a lap of honor for the Egyptian or a farewell tour at Anfield Road? Salah himself did not comment on his future. But the fact is that when all his teammates had already left the pitch, the 33-year-old continued to do his laps, letting the Reds fans celebrate him—and with a smile on his face.

That was something Salah had been missing lately. After once again being a spectator in the 3-3 draw at Leeds, he vented his frustration last weekend, spoke of a broken relationship with coach Arne Slot, and openly raised the possibility of his departure.

Salah was then missing from Liverpool’s squad for the Champions League game at Inter Milan (1-0) during the week, but the top scorer from last season returned to the squad against the Seagulls on Saturday.
He started on the bench, but after Joe Gomez was injured early on, he came on after 26 minutes and promptly made his mark with a strong performance, including an assist for Hugo Ekitiké.
Ekitiké: “Having him on the pitch is a blessing.”

The Frenchman, who was the match winner thanks to his brace, then spoke up for his teammate, who had recently been in the headlines. “Mohamed is a great professional. I see him as a role model,” Ekitiké said in an interview with the BBC. “You can see how much he is involved in goals and assists. He is a legend here. It’s a blessing to be on the pitch with him. He’s exactly the kind of player who makes watching soccer so much fun.“

Slot also emphasized the importance of his protégé after the game, with no sign of the personal problem Salah had hinted at the previous weekend. ”It was an easy decision to include him in the squad,” Slot clarified. “I’ve said many times that what is said between us stays between us.”

“We needed him, and he contributed to the 2-0 win, which is great for us,” Slot continued. “He was a threat. With his first touch, he almost set up Mac Allister. He was constantly involved in the game. That was nice to see, but not a surprise.” His assist secured Salah a Premier League record: with 118 goals and 89 assists in a Reds shirt, he is now the player with the most goal contributions for a single club in the Premier League. He replaces Wayne Rooney, who was directly involved in 276 goals for Manchester United.

Regardless of whether he leaves in the winter or not, this was Salah’s last goal involvement for the Reds for the time being. In the coming days, he will be heading to the Egyptian national team to take part in the Africa Cup of Nations. So, for Slot, the question of whether or not to do without Salah against Tottenham on Saturday does not arise.

Slot: “Yesterday’s conversation and today’s actions speak for themselves.”

Keyword questions: In Slot’s eyes, Salah’s future was clarified with the appearance against Brighton. “For me, the situation when I spoke to him yesterday, he was on the bench and was the first to come on as a substitute, means that the situation has calmed down,” the Dutchman estimates. “But if the outside world wants to keep talking about it, or if there are other reasons why people continue to talk about it, that’s fine with me. Yesterday’s conversation and today’s actions, which he and I took, speak for themselves.”

Sané opens: Galatasaray close to winning the autumn championship

0

Champions Galatasaray didn’t miss a beat in Antalya, winning 3-0 thanks in part to two former Bundesliga pros. Now they are not far from spending the winter at the top of the table.

Galatasaray has suffered only one defeat in the current SüperLig season – and the chances are good that it will remain that way until the end of the year. Cim Bom secured an unchallenged 3-0 win against Antalyaspor, which is threatened with relegation. Goals from two former Bundesliga pros paved the way for the mandatory victory: First, Sané feinted past an opponent and fired home his sixth goal of the season (7′). Former Freiburg player Sallai, once again deployed at right-back, took advantage of one of his forays forward shortly afterwards to make it 2-0 with a low shot (11′).

Sané also sets up the 4-1

At half-time, the club from the resort town brought on Dutchman van de Streek, who was successful as a substitute (69th minute), but by then there was hardly any excitement left in the game. Top striker Osimhen had already made it 3-0 shortly after the restart (50th minute). The other prominent center forward in the squad once again came off the bench—and scored again: Icardi’s fifth substitute goal of the season—assisted by Sané—rounded off the away win in stoppage time. The Argentine now has a total of eight goals.

Galatasaray (39 points) are now formally only two points away from winning the autumn championship, but due to their clearly better goal difference over second-placed Trabzonspor (34), a draw against Kasimpasa next Sunday (6 p.m.) will in all likelihood be enough to secure their place at the top at the turn of the year.
However, if Trabzon slips up against Besiktas this Sunday (6 p.m.), the calculation will be irrelevant anyway.

Chaos and riots at the start of Messi’s tour of India

Because the waiting fans in the stadium in Kolkata could hardly see him, chaos and riots broke out at the start of Lionel Messi’s tour of India. Prior to this, an oversized statue of the world champion was unveiled.

Just under a week after his MLS triumph with Inter Miami, Lionel Messi set off on a three-day tour of India with his teammates Rodrigo de Paul and Luis Suarez. In Kolkata, the Argentine virtually unveiled a 21-meter-high statue showing him holding the World Cup trophy.

Messi then made an appearance at the local Salt Lake Stadium, where he won a friendly match with Argentina against Venezuela (1-0) in 2011. According to media reports, fans in attendance paid the equivalent of over €100 to get close to their idol. Messi initially made his way around the arena on the tartan track, but due to strict security measures, spectators had great difficulty catching a glimpse of him.

This frustration quickly turned into chaos and violence. Many fans stormed the pitch, while others tore the stadium seats from their anchors and destroyed banners and tents. Water bottles were also thrown onto the pitch. Messi left the stadium earlier than expected.

Chief Minister announces investigation – organizer arrested

“I sincerely apologize to Lionel Messi, as well as to all sports lovers and his fans, for the unfortunate incident,” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote in a post on X, adding that she had ordered an investigation into the incident. “I am deeply disturbed and shocked by the mismanagement witnessed at Salt Lake Stadium today,” said the 70-year-old, who was on her way to the stadium when the chaos broke out.

Javed Shamim, a senior state police official, told reporters that the “main organizer” of the event had been arrested. He did not provide any details.

Messi is expected to visit the cities of Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi in the coming days. In the Indian capital, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is also scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Messi’s tour will also be accompanied by the “Hola Messi” fan zone, where fans of “La Pulga” (Spanish for “the flea”) can marvel at a life-size Messi figure on a throne and a replica of his large trophy collection.

Trier extends contract with successful coach Schneider

The basketball players from Trier are causing a sensation in the Bundesliga as newcomers. Now the club is extending its contract with its successful coach.

Bundesliga club VET-CONCEPT Gladiators Trier has extended its contract with promotion coach Jacques Schneider ahead of schedule by two more years until 2028. The club announced this on the sidelines of its home game against Telekom Baskets Bonn.

Schneider moved to the city on the Moselle in 2023. He initially worked there as an assistant coach in the second-tier ProA, and in his first season as head coach last season, he led Trier to promotion. Schneider proved during the promotion season “that he is exactly the right man for our location,” said Achim Schmitz, president and managing director of the Gladiators.

Trier also impresses in the BBL under Schneider

Things are also going really well for Trier in the Basketball Bundesliga under Schneider: The newcomer is among the top teams in the BBL and has been the surprise team of the season so far. “I am very happy about the early contract extension, especially because it shows that here in Trier we don’t just talk about big goals, we also pursue them consistently,” said Schneider. The coach emphasized that the development in Trier is not yet complete.

Clair Obscur sweeps the competition: Historic triumph at the Game Awards

0

Nominated 13 times, winning 9: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 set new records at the 2025 Game Awards. EA SPORTS came away empty-handed in the “Sports and Racing Games” category despite having two nominations.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 had already set a record with its 13 nominations. Nine awards ultimately went to the turn-based role-playing game from French developer Sandfall Interactive on Friday night. This is also a new record, previously held by The Last of Us Part II with its seven awards in 2020.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 not only won Game of the Year, but also awards for Best Direction, Best Music, and Best Indie Game, among others. Lead actress Jennifer English also received the award for Best Performance. Co-favorites such as Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei came away empty-handed amid the one-sided flood of titles.

Mario Kart World beats FC 26 and F1 25

Speaking of coming away empty-handed, EA SPORTS also suffered this fate, even though the Vancouver-based studio was nominated twice in the “Best Sports/Racing Game” category. However, EA SPORTS FC 26 and F1 25 had to give way to Nintendo’s Mario Kart World.

Arc Raiders was named Best Multiplayer Title, while Counter-Strike 2 was voted Best eSports Game. Fittingly, Vitality’s CS2 team won the Team Award. The French team won numerous titles in 2025, including the IEM in Katowice and the Major in Austin.

The best eSports player is South Korean LoL pro Ji-Hoon ‘Chovy’ Jeong. With Gen.G, he won both the MSI and the Esports World Cup as well as the LCK this year. At Worlds, however, he and his team were defeated by KT Rolster in the semifinals – T1 triumphed once again.

Fans don’t see Clair Obscur in the lead

The Game Awards nominees are selected by more than 100 gaming media outlets and influencers. The final decisions are based 90 percent on the votes of expert juries and 10 percent on the community. The exception is the “Player’s Voice” award, which is decided entirely by fan voting. Wuthering Waves prevailed over Clair Obscur.

Ferrari lost “a gem”: Is that the reason for the failure in 2025?

0

Expert Marc Surer believes that the 2025 season would have gone much better for Ferrari if they hadn’t lost technical director Enrico Cardile to Aston Martin.

Ferrari finished the 2025 Formula 1 season without a Grand Prix victory in fourth place in the world championship. This means that the Scuderia missed out on the top three in the Constructors’ World Championship for the first time in five years. The last time this happened was in 2020, when Sebastian Vettel was still driving for the team.

In an exclusive video interview on the Formel1.de YouTube channel, expert Marc Surer explains that he is “not so surprised” by this, “because a man left Ferrari who has always built a great car in recent years,” he explains. “And that man’s name is Enrico Cardile.”

Cardile announced his departure from Scuderia in 2024 to join Aston Martin. Surer emphasizes that although the cars of previous years were not world championship cars, they did at least win some races. “From the very beginning of the ground effect era, Ferrari has always had a great car,” says the former Formula 1 driver, explaining: “They may have implemented it poorly, but basically the car was good.”

In 2024, for example, Ferrari was still fighting for the Constructors’ World Championship title until the season finale in Abu Dhabi. In the end, McLaren won the trophy by 14 points, but a year later, the Woking-based team (833 points) scored more than twice as many points as Ferrari (398).

Surer is certain that this is largely due to Cardile’s departure. This year’s SF-25 was initially developed under the Italian’s leadership, but he handed in his resignation in Maranello in the summer of 2024.
“Ferrari then blocked him from working for six months. So they already knew they were losing a gem,” Surer emphasizes. Cardile’s departure is ultimately responsible for “Ferrari simply not being what it used to be.”

“Cardile was an insider at Ferrari who had been there forever. And I think he just wanted to experience something different, and then the offer from Lawrence Stroll [at Aston Martin] was certainly a temptation he couldn’t resist,” says Surer.

Ferrari itself attributes its poor World Championship ranking this year to, among other things, the decision made very early in the season to discontinue development of the SF-25 in order to focus entirely on the new car for 2026.

It remains to be seen how well Ferrari will start the new Formula 1 rule era next year.

Fans celebrate him for it: Sergio Perez takes a dig at his former team Red Bull

0

After the 2024 season, Sergio Perez was kicked out of Red Bull: Now the Mexican is taking a dig at his former team—and getting approval for it.

Sergio Perez is back: Not only will the Mexican be racing for newcomer Cadillac next year, but the long-time Red Bull driver is also taking a little dig at his former team ahead of his Formula 1 return.

Perez finished the 2024 season in eighth place overall, well behind his teammate Max Verstappen, and was heavily criticized for it. The problem: his successor, Yuki Tsunoda, who took over from Liam Lawson, did not fare any better this year, finishing only 17th in the drivers’ championship.

For last year’s Red Bull driver, this is apparently reason enough to share a humorous “Avengers” meme on his X account (formerly Twitter): “Maybe I treated you too harshly,” it says. The Mexican comments with a terse “Maybe,” once again making his opinion about the dismissal clear.

The post, which has been viewed more than ten million times, has earned Perez almost 300,000 likes and nearly 4,000 comments, most of them positive and supportive. “The first year without Checo, the first year without a title for Max. Fortunately, everyone is realizing what the second Red Bull driver is going through,” writes one fan.

“Somehow, Yuki was even worse than your worst season. Impressive,” adds another user. The Japanese driver, who will be replaced by Isack Hadjar at Red Bull in 2026, is also under criticism for his weak defense against Lando Norris at the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

Perez gets backing from his fans

Perez defended himself much better against Lewis Hamilton in the 2021 finale, helping his teammate to his first world championship success. “You’re the best defense minister,” smiles one fan. “It’s a shame you’re leaving, but it’s great to have you back!”

This isn’t the only encouragement for the Mexican: “Perez’s problems were exaggerated because of certain narratives and because Max was his teammate. The only question is whether Red Bull will be ready to change its culture in car development in 2026. So far, everything has been heavily tailored to Max, and when he’s gone, things could go backwards.”

Another user admits to Perez: “I was one of those who thought Red Bull should have let you go… but in hindsight, of course, that didn’t help at all. It’s not just about Yuki’s defensive weakness, but also his results. You wouldn’t have done any worse than him.“

”I’m looking forward to Checo’s revenge tour next year,“ writes one Perez fan, while another user adds: ”Checo and Bottas will be a strong duo next year. Can’t wait to see the show.” In 2026, the Mexican will have a chance to prove himself at Cadillac…

Is Fabio Di Giannantonio too cautious? “I’m not a kamikaze rider, but…”

0

Four podium finishes with the factory Ducati, but weaknesses in the early stages of races—Fabio Di Giannantonio explains why he deliberately chooses not to be a kamikaze rider.

In his second season with the VR46 team and his first as a factory-supported Ducati rider, Fabio Di Giannantonio achieved four podium finishes in Grand Prix races. Second place in Australia was his best result.

The Italian started from the front row three times and from the second row three times. In the remaining 16 qualifying sessions, Di Giannantonio failed to make it into the first two rows. As a result, he often found himself caught up in the chaos of the first lap.

It was noticeable that the 27-year-old was not often among those riders who were able to regularly make up places in the early stages of the race. ” To be honest, I don’t have the balls to be such a kamikaze on the first lap,“ said Di Giannantonio after the Portuguese Grand Prix. In Portimao, he started from ninth on the grid and only came back from the first lap in 14th place. ”Of course, I try to get the best possible position, to be further ahead, but always at the limit of survival.”

“At the end of the day, we’re riding at 200 to 300 km/h on the straight into a braking zone, and in front of you you have a group of several 200-kilogram motorcycles and people. So if you hit someone with a dive bomb, it hurts.”

“And to be honest, I always prefer to play clean,” says Di Giannantonio. Nevertheless, he doesn’t want his words to be misunderstood: “I didn’t say I don’t have the balls to be aggressive.”

“I just said I don’t have the balls to be a kamikaze. That’s something else. Aggressiveness is definitely part of the sport, and I’m an aggressive driver when I need to be.“

”For example, in Saturday’s sprint in Portugal: I had a great start and was already sixth after three corners, I think, or around there. So I’m aggressive when I need to be aggressive, but I’m definitely not a kamikaze driver who just plows into things.”

“I’m not a champagne or gravel bed driver,” is how Di Giannantonio puts it. In other words, he wants to take calculated risks and not leave things to chance, which could end badly and lead to crashes and injuries.

Nevertheless, qualifying, the start, and the first few corners are crucial for the final result. Overtaking maneuvers have become more difficult from year to year. On some tracks, processions develop after the first lap.

“I think what has changed the most is the moment when sprints were introduced,” says “Diggia,” looking back on 2023. “In the beginning, everyone was pretty optimistic because everyone thought the sprints would be very short.”

“Now, I think everyone is calmer and more sensible when it comes to maneuvers. That’s the biggest change I’ve personally experienced.” In sprints, Di Giannantonio achieved five podium finishes in 2025, but no victories.

Toto Wolff’s “400 km/h statement”: What he actually wanted to achieve

0

A few weeks ago, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff caused a stir when he said that Formula 1 cars could reach speeds of up to 400 km/h in 2026 – what he meant by that

Next year, new regulations will come into force in Formula 1, with revised drive units that are divided almost equally between combustion and electric motor power. In addition, the cars will have less downforce and lower air resistance.

In combination with active aerodynamics, this means that extremely high speeds can still be achieved. A few weeks ago, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff even claimed that next year’s cars could “scratch the 400 km/h mark.”

The Austrian’s statement caused some surprise, which is why he responded to it once again. “Well, I felt we needed to give this engine a little marketing upgrade because people are talking it down, and it’s an incredibly impressive piece of technology,” Wolff said on the Formula 1 podcast Beyond The Grid.

The Mercedes team boss explained: “If you add everything up, we could reach 400 km/h or maybe even exceed it, but of course then you run out of energy on the next straight and you’re not fast enough.”

New Formula 1 cars will be “pretty epic”

Hywel Thomas, managing director of Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains, analyzes the new power units in more detail. The Brit explains that the cars will be even faster than the previous generation early on the straights, but that energy management will limit their maximum speed.

“I think the performance at the start of the straights will be very, very similar to today,” Thomas emphasizes. “We have the turbocharger, which no longer has an electric motor, so there could be a small turbo lag. We may compensate for this turbo lag with the electrics.”

“So I think the performance at the start of the straights will be pretty epic compared to today. But we know we’ll have to throttle back earlier on the straights because we don’t have enough electrical energy to use it all the time.” In plain language, this means that speeds of 400 km/h are unlikely to be achieved in the future either.
