Dream return to Camp Nou: Barcelona crowns Lewandowski’s early start

FC Barcelona made its eagerly awaited return to Camp Nou a joyous occasion, ultimately giving Athletic Bilbao no chance in a 4-0 victory. The Basques, who finished the game with ten men, were too careless with their chances overall.

Last Monday, the news spread like wildfire in Catalonia: the eagerly awaited return to Camp Nou was already scheduled for this weekend. 45,401 spectators were officially allowed in, and 45,157 were ultimately admitted. The rush for tickets, the cheapest of which cost a whopping €199, was huge.

Hansi Flick was also hugely excited, and after the 4-2 win against Celta Vigo, the former national coach fielded his best eleven. They were fired up from the start. The Catalans started at their usual high tempo. The fact that the hosts were already 1-0 up after just four minutes gave the party atmosphere in the stadium an extra boost: Eric won the ball high up the pitch, Lewandowski immediately shot from the left side of the penalty area and found the near corner – keeper Unai Simon did not look too happy about that.

For Bilbao, led by former Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde, Nico Williams had the first shot on goal in the 12th minute. However, the champions were much more dangerous at first: within seconds, Fermin and Dani Olmo missed chances to make it 2-0 (20th minute).

It took Bilbao half an hour to wake up, partly because Barcelona kept retreating and leaving the field to their opponents. This almost had consequences: Nico Williams headed the ball to Unai Gomez with great vision. He shot unchallenged, but straight at goalkeeper Joan Garcia (36′). Four minutes later, the fans held their breath as Barcelona failed to defend Bilbao’s attack down the left and Nico Williams shot inches wide of the left post (40′).

Ferran Torres punishes Bilbao mercilessly

If you don’t take your chances… The punishment came before the break: Yuri Berchiche played a weak ball that flew around Bilbao’s ears. Lamine Yamal set up a dream pass with the outside of his foot, and Ferran Torres made it 2-0 at halftime with the kind assistance of Unai Simon (45+3).

After the break, Barcelona had no time to lose—and sealed the deal in the 48th minute: the powerful Eric set up his second goal, this time for Fermin.

The Spaniard was back in the spotlight shortly afterwards when Bilbao’s Sancet fouled him from behind without any chance of getting the ball. The yellow card that was initially given was rescinded after video evidence, and the red card was absolutely justified (54′).

Raphinha misses dream comeback

In the last half hour, the hosts took it much easier, with an eye on the Champions League. After a strong attack via Koundé, Dani Olmo narrowly missed the fourth goal (65′). Nine minutes before the end, Raphinha was celebrated with chants on his return, and seconds later his curling shot almost found the top left corner (82′). Shortly afterwards, Lamine Yamal missed his chance to score, but he was to set up another goal: after an outstanding solo run, his through ball to Ferran Torres was perfect. Alone in front of Unai Simon, the finish to make it 4-0 was a mere formality (90′).

After the clear La Liga home win, the team travels to Chelsea on Tuesday in the Champions League, who will not make it easy for the Catalans. Bilbao has a tough task away to Slavia Prague at the same time.

Son scores twice and misses: Müller reaches conference final with Vancouver

Thomas Müller’s Vancouver Whitecaps faced Los Angeles FC in the conference semifinals. The Canadians squandered a 2-0 lead, Heung-Min Son saved LA with a brace in extra time, but then missed in the penalty shootout.

Thomas Müller versus Heung-Min Son was the headline act in the MLS playoff Conference Semifinal duel, with the Vancouver Whitecaps hosting Los Angeles FC. B.C. Place Stadium in the Canadian metropolis was sold out for the first time, at least since Müller started playing there after his move from Bayern Munich.

Vancouver had finished second in the Western Conference and prevailed in two games against Dallas in the first playoff round. LAFC, third after the regular season, had similarly confidently eliminated Austin.

The Canadians took the lead in the 39th minute after a long ball from goalkeeper Takoaka completely caught the LAFC defense off guard. Sabbi sprinted forward and lifted the ball over Lloris into the net. Shortly before halftime, Vancouver scored twice in quick succession—and Müller was right in the thick of it: After a corner from Berhalter, the long-time Munich player rose high and headed the ball at Lloris, who was unable to hold on to it. Laborda was in the right place at the right time and scored (45+1).

Things were looking good for Vancouver and Müller, who was shown a yellow card in the 44th minute. However, LAFC remained in the game and made it really exciting again after an hour: Son failed several times from close range against keeper Takoaka, but somehow poked the ball over the line (60′).

Vancouver now had a lot of defensive work to do, with the visitors pushing for the equalizer. Shortly before the end, the Whitecaps were also reduced to ten men when Blackmon was shown a second yellow card (90+2). A little later, LAFC were rewarded for their efforts – and how: Son took a free kick from 18 meters and curled it perfectly over the wall from the left. Takoaka got a hand to it but couldn’t prevent it from going in (90+5).

Son misses, of all people

This sent LA into extra time, which Müller did not watch on the pitch after being substituted. However, the decision was not made there either, even though the visitors had a great chance to win after 120 minutes – but in one scene, Vancouver was lucky three times with the aluminum.

So it had to go to penalties. The first shooter was Son, who showed nerves and only hit the post. LAFC was behind, with the Whitecaps converting all of their penalties, while Cherundolo’s team missed their third penalty, taken by Delgado. Ocampo had the chance to win the game, but failed to put the ball in the net. LAFC equalized again, but Laborda sealed the deal and sent the Whitecaps to the Conference Final for the first time in their club history.

There, Vancouver will now face the winner of the San Diego vs. Minnesota match, which kicks off on Tuesday at 4 a.m. If the Whitecaps prevail there as well, Vancouver will advance to the MLS final. Awaiting them there will be Cincinnati, Inter Miami, Philadelphia, or New York City FC.

After more than two years: Pogba’s comeback ends in heavy defeat

0

Paul Pogba had to wait 26 months for this moment: on Saturday evening, the 32-year-old came on as a substitute in Monaco’s away game in Rennes – but Pogba was unable to prevent the Monegasques from losing.

It was the 85th minute at Roazhon Park in Rennes when Monaco coach Sebastien Pocognoli ended Pogba’s long wait and sent him onto the field to replace Mamadou Coulibaly.

Pogba had last played professionally on September 3, 2023, when he was still with Juventus Turin. This was followed by a lengthy doping ban and several injuries. His ban expired in March of this year, and his contract with Juve had already been terminated in November 2024. Pogba then moved to the principality this summer. Curiously, Pogba made his Ligue 1 debut at the ripe old age of 32. Born east of Paris, Pogba joined Manchester United at the tender age of 16 without ever having played in the top flight in his home country. He then moved back and forth between ManUnited and Juve before his inglorious end at the Old Lady with the doping offense. Pogba always denied knowingly taking anything illegal.

When he came on, the score was already 0-4.

His first minutes at Monaco ended in a clear 1-4 defeat. By the time he came on, the game was already decided, with Rennes leading 4-0 thanks to goals from Boudlal (20′), Camara (48′), Embolo (73′) and Blas (83′). Biereth was only able to make the score look a little better for AS in stoppage time (90’+5).
Next Friday, Stade Rennes will kick off the 14th matchday at 8:45 p.m. at FC Metz. AS Monaco will face Pafos FC in the Champions League on Wednesday (6:45 p.m.) before hosting PSG on Saturday (5 p.m.).

Despite ongoing injury crisis: Galatasaray avoids embarrassment

Galatasaray pulled off a remarkable escape on Saturday evening, avoiding embarrassment against bottom-of-the-table Genclerbirligi. However, there was more bad news for Cimbom in terms of personnel.

A carefree Süper Lig season without defeat? Galatasaray had to bury that dream before the international break. A 0-0 draw at Trabzonspor in the top match was followed by a 0-1 away defeat at newly promoted Kocaelispor. Suddenly, the lead over their pursuers and rivals Fenerbahce was gone.

This made the match against newly promoted Genclerbirligi Ankara on matchday 13 all the more important. The fact that it was a home game was an advantage: Galatasaray had not lost in front of their own fans in 32 competitive games.

With Sané, who had recently been outstanding for the German national team, the home side set about their task. However, after just 15 minutes, there was more bad news in terms of personnel: Lemina grabbed his groin and was unable to continue (17′). Shortly afterwards, the underdogs took the lead: Niang was unmarked in the five-meter box and slotted home a Gürpüz free kick from the left half of the field (22′). Galatasaray searched in vain for a response – and then lost another key player: Singo gritted his teeth for a while after a hard tackle at ankle height, but had to be replaced by Icardi in the 40th minute.

Events unfold rapidly from the 55th minute onwards

It was that striker who averted the impending embarrassment after the break. Following a pass from Karatas, the Argentine, who was honored before the game for his 100th competitive appearance for the Turks, equalized in the 55th minute. Two minutes later, the visitors’ own corner flew around their ears, Sané passed to the completely unmarked Icardi – keeper Ricardo Velho parried, but only as far as Yilmaz, who was waiting to tap in (57′). The game had turned around. And this phase could have been even more bitter for Genclerbirligi: Thalisson was shown a second yellow card for a heavy challenge on Karatas (60′). Six minutes later, Gündogan, who had come on at half-time, made it 3-1 (66′).

The game seemed to be over, but Mimaroglu’s header made it 2-3 and brought some excitement back into the game (77′) . However, there was only an inglorious finale at Rams Park: former Freiburg player Sallai accidentally kicked his opponent in the head, prompting the referee to show him a red card after reviewing the video footage (90+4).

Ahead of an immensely important week, Galatasaray at least got back on track: Tuesday’s Champions League fixture at home against Union Saint-Gilloise will be followed by the SüperLig derby at arch-rivals Fenerbahce on December 1.

55 points! Outstanding Harden ends Clippers’ losing streak

0

The Los Angeles Clippers defeated the Charlotte Hornets thanks to an outstanding performance by James Harden, ending their losing streak for the time being. The 55 points are a new franchise record for the Clippers.

On an emotional evening for Chris Paul, it was his former Rockets teammate Harden who set the course for an away win early on. After falling behind in the opening minutes, the Clippers, and Harden in particular, went on a 22-4 run that quickly gave them a double-digit lead.

Harden scored 27 points in the first quarter, hitting six three-pointers, and could have even increased his tally to 29, but missed two free throws in the final seconds. The trend continued in the second quarter, with The Beard already on 35 points at the break.

However, rookie Kon Knueppel also had a good day for the Hornets (26 points), keeping Charlotte within striking distance. It was only with another run at the end of the third quarter that the Clippers were able to pull away decisively, and Harden was able to shine once again. He finished the game with a season-high 55 points (17/26 FG, 10/16 three-pointers) and seven assists.

He was supported by Ivica Zubac (18, 9 rebounds), while CP3 scored only three points in his last NBA return to his home state, but played eight assists. For the Hornets, Brandon Miller scored 21 points and LaMelo Ball contributed a quiet 18 points.

Bottas on a divine mission: The Finn marries a couple in Vegas

Valtteri Bottas surprises once again with an extraordinary appearance at the Las Vegas Grand Prix—he married a couple.

Mercedes reserve driver Valtteri Bottas caused an unusual scene during the race weekend in Las Vegas: the Finn was seen in the immediate vicinity of the Formula 1 Grand Prix in the gambling metropolis acting as a registrar in front of the bride and groom, giving a speech and asking the decisive questions.

In the video shared on X, Bottas can be seen standing in front of the bride and groom. The Finn recounts how the couple met and assures them that “their love can be felt here too.” Bottas was dressed appropriately for the occasion in a glittering Las Vegas GP bomber jacket and a Mercedes cap.

Bottas also walked down the aisle with the bride, even holding her bouquet. Of course, the ceremony was accompanied in style by an Elvis impersonator. The Formula 1 intro provided the perfect backdrop for the newlyweds’ first kiss.

Villeneuve already did it in Vegas

While the first Las Vegas race weekend in 2023 still offered a “Race to the Altar” package at the Little Vegas Chapel, in 2025 the new F1 Neon Chapel will be located directly in the paddock of the premier class for the first time.

In 2023, former world champion Jacques Villeneuve became the first Formula 1 driver ever to get married in the paddock during a race weekend. He said “I do” to his now wife Giulia Marra in the Little Vegas Chapel, accompanied by the classic “Here Comes the Bride” march, also accompanied by the Formula 1 intro song. Of course, an Elvis impersonator was also a must for the couple.
Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, on the other hand, quickly made it clear that he and his fiancée Alexandra Saint Mleux would not be following suit, even though Formula 1 now has its own chapel in the middle of the paddock.
Las Vegas not the right place for Leclerc

“I know you all want to know if I’m going to use the Las Vegas race to get married, but I’ll say it right away: no,” said Leclerc. “Alex and I want to do things at the right time…”

The Monegasque announced on November 2, 2025, that he had proposed to his long-time partner. “Yes, I’m very, very happy. It was, of course, a special week full of emotions. This step is a very special moment for everyone,” Leclerc said ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix. “And yes, Alex and I are incredibly happy.”

Andrea Stella: For me, Norris and Piastri are “like two sons”

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella talks about Lando Norris’ development—and why he now sees Norris and Piastri “like two sons.”

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella looks back with great emotion on Lando Norris’ 150th Grand Prix in Las Vegas. He still vividly remembers Norris’ very first meters in the McLaren – a test in Budapest that became the starting point of a special relationship for Stella.
“I remember exactly how he commented at the time on how we built up speed step by step,” he says. “And now we’re at the 150th race, fighting for pole positions, victories and the championship. It just feels warm.“ Stella emphasizes how close his relationship with his drivers Norris and Oscar Piastri has become. ”To me, they are like two sons,“ he says. ”It’s a great experience—both professionally and personally.” The close bond has grown organically over the years through hard work, trust, and shared developmental steps.

Norris’ development: More than just raw speed

Stella is particularly impressed by Norris’ driving and technical maturity. “The most important quality for a Formula 1 driver remains pure speed. You can be good in many areas, but if you’re not fast, the results won’t show,” he explains.

However, Norris has not only optimized his pace in recent years. “His technical development, his way of generating speed—all of that has been a highly interesting process that we have been privileged to accompany.”

Big leap this season

Stella also highlights Norris’ personal development, especially in the current season: “Lando has grown a lot—also as a person. After a phase in which he could have made better use of some opportunities, he managed to learn from it.”

Today, Norris uses all resources—his own as well as those of the team—much more efficiently and is therefore “at the peak of his performance.”

Will IndyCar lose a team in 2026? Indy 500 sensation in jeopardy

0

Despite sporting highlights, Prema’s IndyCar project is under pressure. DC Racing Solutions is in trouble – and the team is left without a charter.

Prema Racing faces an uncertain future after its remarkable IndyCar debut in 2025. Team boss Rene Rosin confirms on request that the Italian racing team is “exploring various solutions” to remain in the championship in 2026.

The background to this is ongoing financial problems at the parent company DC Racing Solutions, which also owns the Iron Lynx and Iron Dames sports car programs. Numerous rumors have surrounded Iron Lynx since Claudio Schiavoni suddenly disappeared after Le Mans.

Prema made its IndyCar debut this season with two Chevrolet-powered cars. With Callum Ilott and Robert Schwarzman, the team launched an ambitious program that made headlines primarily due to Schwarzman’s completely surprising pole position at the Indianapolis 500. The former Formula 2 and Ferrari Hypercar driver made a clear statement and was one of the most notable rookies throughout the season.

Despite these sporting successes, there has been increasing speculation about the future of the project. According to information from sources close to the company, DC Racing Solutions is said to be experiencing financial difficulties, which are affecting several of the group’s programs.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that Prema is the only full-time team without a charter for the new structure that will come into effect in 2025. These charters guarantee 25 cars fixed starting places in all races outside the Indy 500. This is a disadvantage for Prema because it significantly limits its planning security.

“We are looking at various options and working hard on them,” says Rosin. “Starting from scratch was challenging, but we have made rapid progress, secured pole position at Indy and have recently been consistently in the top 10.” At the same time, he admits that the season has been anything but easy in terms of logistics and equipment.

When asked whether he expects to be back on the IndyCar starting grid in 2026, Rosin remains cautious: “We’re working on it, but I can’t say any more than that at the moment.”

In sporting terms, the season was solid for both drivers. Ilott, who returned to Prema after a thoroughly successful WEC year with Jota, collected four top-10 finishes in the last five races. With two sixth places at Laguna Seca and Portland, he finished the season in 21st place in the drivers’ standings.

Schwarzman fought long and hard for the rookie title against Louis Foster of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, achieving his best result with ninth place in Iowa and another top-10 finish at Gateway.

Rosin makes it clear that, from Prema’s point of view, driver planning for 2026 is complete – provided the team remains in the series: “Both drivers have multi-year contracts, there’s nothing more to say about that.”

How Prema ultimately decides and whether DC Racing Solutions finds a viable structure for the IndyCar program will become clear in the coming weeks.

One thing is certain: in its debut year, the team proved that it is competitive in sporting terms. However, whether the project will be sustainable in the long term now depends largely on factors outside the racetrack.

Gasly with “adrenaline” in P10, Colapinto “luckily not into the wall”

Alpine shows promising qualifying in Las Vegas with Gasly after Friday practice – Colapinto probably wanted too much in a corner

Alpine ended a long dry spell at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix when Pierre Gasly finally scored World Championship points again after three months. One of the reasons for the long wait was an early focus on the development of the 2026 car.

But Brazil has something in common with Las Vegas: both are tracks that the Frenchman has enjoyed in the past. Although Gasly has not yet managed to secure a podium finish in the Nevada desert as he did in Brazil, he has already achieved two top-five qualifying results, finishing fifth in 2023 and third in 2024.

And historically, the Alpine has always been a little faster in Las Vegas than its usual season pace. Accordingly, the 29-year-old was optimistic after Friday’s practice sessions, despite two twelfth places: “The goal is to be in the mix for Q3.”

Gasly puzzles his way to 10th place

Due to missing the third free practice session, Gasly had to “put everything together extremely quickly,” but with his slightly pinker Alpine, he quickly found his rhythm in qualifying on the slippery streets of Las Vegas. Nevertheless, the conditions will probably rob him of his sleep tonight: “I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight, I still have so much adrenaline in my body.”

“It’s always about risk and reward—how much risk you take, what you feel, and how hard you can push. You can’t even blink for a tenth of a second at the wheel because something is always happening,” said the Frenchman, describing the conditions on the track.

Gasly clearly found the right balance and put his Alpine in 6th place in Q1, followed by a strong 7th place in Q2 – ahead of Fernando Alonso, Charles Leclerc, and the current World Championship runner-up Oscar Piastri. (For the current standings in the Drivers’ Championship) In the end, the Frenchman secured 10th place on the starting grid for the Las Vegas Grand Prix in “one of the most difficult qualifying sessions of my entire Formula 1 career.”

Colapinto crashes in turn 15

Gasly’s teammate Franco Colapinto also made it through the first part of qualifying in a solid 11th place, despite a few spectacular spins. “We’ve improved a lot, but it was just extremely difficult out there,” Colapinto said after the session. “The amount of rain and standing water was enormous, and the asphalt and white lines, which you couldn’t even touch, made it feel even worse.”

It was precisely this kind of situation that knocked the Argentine out of contention for a place in the top 10. “The lap was good, I was clearly ahead in the delta until I hit the kerb and the car skidded away in turn 15. It was a huge slide, I almost lost the car – luckily not into the wall – but of course the time was gone.“

Colapinto will therefore start the race from 15th place, but he is in a fighting mood: ”Hopefully it will stay dry tomorrow, then we can fight our way forward and drive towards the points.”

Fewer Las Vegas surprises, more points?

Steve Nielsen, Alpine Managing Director, sees similar chances of scoring points: “As a team, we have a few points we need to improve, but we are in a competitive position tomorrow and have our sights set firmly on the points.” (To the qualifying report)

Surprisingly, Gasly is less optimistic about the prospects of success in the race. However, this also has to do with the past in Las Vegas: “My qualifying sessions have mostly been better than my races lately. Last year, our engine blew up here, and the year before that, we had massive graining. So it will be interesting,” said the Alpine driver.

“At this stage of the season, I’ve stopped having expectations. I go into the race, give it my all—and then we’ll see what happens in the end,” Gasly continued. “But I think we should be in the fight for points.”

Boris Becker becomes a father for the fifth time

This is the second daughter for the three-time Wimbledon winner.

Tennis icon Boris Becker is delighted about the birth of his daughter Zoë Vittoria. “Welcome to the world,” Becker wrote on Instagram on his 58th birthday, accompanying a black-and-white photo showing his hand, the hands of his wife Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro, and their newborn daughter, who was born on Friday. This is Becker’s fifth child.

The three-time Wimbledon champion has three sons and another daughter from previous relationships. Becker, who was born in Leimen, married his wife Lilian in Italy last year. He most recently appeared as a Sky expert at the ATP Finals in Turin.
