Depay’s goal not enough: Oranje still waiting for World Cup ticket

In Poland, the Netherlands had the chance to qualify early for next year’s World Cup. But against a determined home side, the Elftal were too harmless and could not manage more than a draw.

In Poland, the Netherlands had the opportunity to become the fourth team from Europe to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico with a win. But the Poles, who are in second place in qualifying group G, still had a glimmer of hope for direct qualification.

Poland’s coach Jan Urban made four changes for this match after the 2-0 win against Lithuania in October. First, regular goalkeeper Skorupski was missing and was replaced by Wolfsburg’s Grabara. Wisniewski, Bednarek, and Slisz were also not in the squad. Kedziora, Ziolkowski, and Zalewski started instead.

Oranje coach Ronald Koeman only had to do without Dumfries in the starting eleven after the 4-0 win over Finland. Leipzig’s Geertruida started in his place.

Kaminski scores through Verbruggen’s legs

The game started without a feeling-out phase. Poland began with a lot of offensive momentum and Zalewski had a huge chance to give the Netherlands an early shock in the 2nd minute. But the Atalanta Bergamo man was too surprised and, unmarked in front of goal from just five meters out, fired the ball over the bar (2nd minute).

The Netherlands then took control of the game and kept the ball deep in the opponent’s half. However, there was no real gap in the deep block of the Poles, who had to bring on Kapustka for the injured Szymanski after just 13 minutes – he was celebrating his 50th international cap that day. A shot from Malen was the most dangerous action from Koeman’s team.
The hosts punished the Oranje for not being more forceful just a few minutes before the break. The in-form Cologne player Kaminski was sent on his way perfectly by Lewandowski in one of several counterattacks and scored the 1-0 (43′) through Verbruggen’s legs.

Quick response from Depay

However, the hosts’ joy at their somewhat fortunate lead was not to last long. Shortly after the break, the Elftal responded quickly. First, Malen almost failed miserably with a header against Grabara, who was simply in the right place, but Depay buried the rebound to make it 1-1 (47′). Lewandowski almost responded immediately (49′), but failed to get past Verbruggen. However, the equalizer did not conjure up a new offensive spirit for the Elftal. Instead, both teams neutralized each other and at times the game even lost momentum. Because pyrotechnics were thrown onto the pitch from the stands, Italian referee Maurizio Mariani interrupted the game for a few minutes, which the teams used for a short drink break (59′).

Even after that, however, neither team was able to generate any real momentum. Instead, the ball often ran through the respective defensive lines without really creating any gaps. It took until the 82nd minute for Skoras to fail again with a curling shot at Verbruggen. And even in the six minutes of added time due to the interruption, there was hardly any danger.

As a result, the Oranje missed out on early World Cup qualification, while Poland retained a glimmer of hope. Now, on the final matchday of World Cup qualifying on Monday (8:45 p.m.), both teams will once again be playing for everything. Poland would have to win in Malta and make up a 13-goal deficit to overtake the Netherlands in the table and qualify directly. The Elftal, on the other hand, will want to prevent that from happening against Lithuania.

Messi and Martinez: Argentina leaves nothing to chance in Angola

World champions Argentina continue to be in good form. The Albiceleste completed their task relatively easily in a friendly against Angola, winning 2-0. Lionel Messi shone once again.

Argentina was the guest in the West African metropolis of Luanda on Friday, where it faced Angola south of the equator. The favorites were clear: anything less than a victory for the Albiceleste, who coach Lionel Scaloni had to do without World Cup winners Julian Alvarez, Nahuel Molina, and Giuliano Simeone, who were not allowed to enter Angola due to missing yellow fever vaccinations, would have been an embarrassment. That did not happen, even though Angola put up a very decent fight.

The “Palancas Negras” (English: Black Rhinoceros) played a lot down the wings, repeatedly crossing the ball, but were unable to capitalize on this offensively. The hosts put up a strong fight, as evidenced by their 59 percent tackle success rate. And in other aspects such as shots on goal (7:8),
fouls (12:16) and corners (5:6), the performance was impressive. However, Argentina was clearly the better team, with 66 percent possession over the 90 minutes and more than twice as many passes (512:253). Ultimately, it was no surprise that the world champions won.
However, both goals in the 2-0 victory came from counterattacks: shortly before the half-time whistle, Lionel Messi, who may soon be honored with a statue in front of the renovated Camp Nou in Barcelona, drove forward on the right and played a vertical pass into the path of Lautaro Martinez, who then scored with a full-blooded shot into the near corner from 11 meters out on the right (43′). Despite their lead, the South Americans continued to struggle, failing to add to their tally for a long time and consequently having to endure a nervous wait. However, the 2-0 came in the 83rd minute: Angola’s center back Buatu made a mistake, clearing inadequately into the middle to Martinez. The 28-year-old Inter Milan striker then played a superb through ball into the box to Messi, who in turn thanked him and scored from 11 meters out on the left into the far corner.

In the end, Argentina secured their third win in a row, ending the World Cup year with an impressive record of just one defeat in nine games. The Albiceleste, who had already qualified for the finals in Canada, Mexico, and the USA, lost 1-0 to Ecuador at the end of the South American World Cup qualifiers. In addition to victories over Uruguay (1-0), Brazil (4-1), Chile (1-0), Venezuela (3-0 and 1-0), Puerto Rico (6-0) and now Angola (2-0) in their last international match of the year, there was also a 1-1 draw with Colombia.

Great honor for Messi: Barcelona plans statue in front of Camp Nou

FC Barcelona is already working on plans to honor club legend Lionel Messi with a statue in front of the renovated Camp Nou. This was announced by President Joan Laporta.

A statue of Lionel Messi has stood in Buenos Aires, the capital of his native Argentina, since the summer of 2016. Since 2023, unveiled shortly after his triumph at the World Cup in Qatar, another has stood in the museum of the South American Football Confederation CONMEBOL in Paraguay. And soon one in front of Camp Nou?

At least that is what FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has now promised the 38-year-old. Just a few days ago, Messi visited his old home, which is currently still under renovation, and Laporta subsequently mentioned that he wanted to give the club legend “the most beautiful honor in the world.”

Laporta explained exactly what this might look like a few days later at a book presentation in Barcelona. “Messi will always be connected to Barca. He knows that the doors are always open for him,” emphasized the 63-year-old.

Laporta continued: “He should get a statue in front of Camp Nou, just like Johan Cruyff and Laszlo Kubala.” The Catalan president described Messi as an “icon” of the club “who has left his mark here.” The Argentine joined Barcelona’s legendary youth academy, La Masia, in 2000 and ultimately played 678 competitive games and scored 602 goals for the 28-time Spanish champions before his departure in the summer of 2021.

Laporta on Messi statue: “We’re working on it”

Barca is already planning to honor this impressive career. “We have already discussed it in a meeting and are working on it,” Laporta said. “His family still has to agree—but all Barca fans would want it.”

Messi is currently playing for Inter Miami, for whom he has been playing since the summer of 2023, in the MLS playoffs for the title in the US. Starting on November 23, they will face FC Cincinnati in the second round. Messi finished the regular season with 29 goals in 28 appearances. Not only did he secure the top scorer title, but with an additional 19 assists, he was also the MLS’s top scorer.

Schmidt wants to return to the dugout: “I dream of Spain and Italy”

Martin Schmidt took time off to care for his father. Now the Valais native openly admits that he wants to return to the sidelines.

Martin Schmidt resigned from 1. FSV Mainz 05 because his father needed him. The then sporting director of the Bundesliga club returned to Switzerland to care for his father. His father is now doing a little better and is being cared for at home, as Schmidt revealed to blue Sport, and the former Bundesliga coach wants to return to the sidelines. The 58-year-old doesn’t want to rule anything out: “It’s not a wish list. But I don’t want to rule anything out. But ultimately, you always have to have dreams.“

Schmidt is particularly attracted to two southern countries: ”Well, I always thought that my approach from Germany and Switzerland, which is athletically intensive, could also be implemented in the south. Yes, I dream of Spain and Italy! My backpack is full. I was a Bundesliga coach, a sporting director.” However, Schmidt also admits candidly that he lacks the language skills in these countries. He could possibly give a fiery speech, but a conversation with journalists would be impossible. A position in Switzerland would also be conceivable for Schmidt. He does not even want to rule out the Challenge League, because one must not forget that he has not been active as a coach since 2020.

Foul on Dinwiddie in the final play? Here’s what Coach Parker has to say

FC Bayern Munich suffered a narrow defeat at Anadolu Efes. Spencer Dinwiddie missed the potential game-winner, but then complained emphatically to the referees.

Bayern didn’t have much luck with the referees on Friday, with numerous controversial decisions in Antalya going in favor of the “home team” from Istanbul. In one instance, an offensive foul was called instead of an and-1, while in another, the continuation rule was interpreted very generously for the Turks.

Grade Spencer Dinwiddie complained several times, but especially after the last play of the game. On his potential game-winner over the outstretched arms of Nick Weiler-Babb, the former NBA star felt contact on his arm, but the referees did not call it.

Parker refuses to comment

Assistant coach T.J. Parker, who was once again on the sidelines for Gordon Herbert, preferred not to comment. “I don’t know what happened on the last play. Istanbul had played a home game,” the Frenchman said meaningfully.

Ultimately, it was difficult to see, partly because the Turkish broadcasters in Antalya did not show a replay of the action. So the Turks’ 74-72 victory was confirmed, their fourth win in eleven games. Bayern are only slightly better off with a 5-6 record.

Former F1 driver becomes sports car world champion and father on the same day

Ferrari reserve driver in seventh heaven: He celebrates the WEC world championship title in Bahrain in the Ferrari 499P, but he is already on his way to see his daughter.

Antonio Giovinazzi has achieved a feat that may remain unique: the Italian, who competed in a total of 62 Formula 1 races between 2017 and 2021, won the World Endurance Championship (WEC) title in Bahrain together with his teammates James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi.
No sooner had he left the cockpit than he flew home for the birth of his daughter. In the WEC, which is built around the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the grand finale took place last weekend with the 8 Hours of Bahrain. Giovinazzi, Calado, and Pier Guidi traveled to as-Sakhir as the leaders in the standings in their factory-entered Ferrari 499P hypercar.

His direct opponent was an old acquaintance: Robert Kubica, who has also made his mark in Formula 1, fought for the title alongside Yifei Ye and Phil Hanson. The trio had won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a privately entered Ferrari 499P from the same team (AF Corse), but came up short in the World Championship.

The Porsche duo Kevin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor from the Penske works team also had a theoretical chance, but after starting from last place on the grid, they played no role in the battle for the top spots.

During the 8-hour race, which started in the early afternoon and went on into the night, Giovinazzi drove a double stint of 63 laps right at the start of the race in air temperatures of over 30 degrees Celsius. He then handed over the wheel in second place and did not see any more action for the rest of the race.

He announced the reason via Instagram: “I’m becoming world champion and a dad on the same night. Together with mom, we welcome you with all our love. Welcome to the world, Ginevra Madia.” However, he had to stay in Bahrain to attend the world championship press conference. He was not there for the big victory ceremony on Sunday evening.

“We’ve been working towards this title for three years. We’ve grown as a team, every year, every race. We’ve had a fantastic season together,” says Giovinazzi.

“The first part is definitely the most difficult part of the race,” he continues. He is referring to the fact that it is the hottest part of the race, but at the same time, tires have to be saved for possible late safety car phases (which actually happened in the race). I think everything was perfect today, there were no mistakes at all, and that was the key to success.”

First Ferrari prototype world championship in 53 years

While he stayed in touch with his wife, Pier Guidi and Calado continued to battle on the track. Ferrari had no chance against the two Toyota GR010 Hybrids, but the 50 was disqualified.

The 2025 WEC season was a walk in the park for the Ferrari 499P. They won the first four races in a row, including Le Mans. After that, the Italian hypercars were sharply slowed down in the Balance of Performance (BoP), but were still good enough for podium finishes.

Calado, Pier Guidi, and Giovinazzi had already won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the Ferrari in 2023. The other two cars took the Le Mans victory in 2024 and 2025. Ferrari has only now won a world championship title. In addition to the drivers’ championship, the manufacturers’ championship also goes to Maranello. It is the first title for a Ferrari sports car prototype since winning the 1972 World Championship. Antonio and Antonella Giovinazzi probably didn’t care about that at the time. The 31-year-old can now enjoy his new family happiness. At the same time, he is also a test and reserve driver for Ferrari’s Formula 1 team. He shares this role with Guanyu Zhou.

After horrific accident: Dragster legend John Force retires at 76

0

The dragster legend is calling it quits: After his serious injury, John Force explains why he will not be returning to the cockpit.

Dragster legend John Force has officially announced his retirement at the age of 76. The 16-time NHRA Funny Car champion is retiring from active motorsport just over a year after his serious accident at the 2024 Virginia Nationals event in Richmond. Force suffered a traumatic brain injury in the crash at more than 300 miles per hour and subsequently spent several months undergoing intensive medical treatment.

After his recovery, Force returned to the racetrack, but was replaced by Jack Beckman in his own team’s Chevrolet SS for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Now the American has confirmed that he will not be returning to the cockpit. The announcement came on the same day that his daughter Brittany also announced her retirement.

In a video message, Force said: “It’s been over a year, but I was and continue to be under medical supervision. If I say something wrong, please excuse me. It’s time for me to retire, and everything makes sense, even though I still have medical issues to take care of. Do I want to get back in the car and get hit in the head again? I don’t want that.“

Force also emphasized that his growing family played an important role in his decision: ”I have new grandchildren. Courtney just had a baby girl, and she already has two daughters, Harlan and Tinley. We also have Autumn and, of course, Jacob and Noah. So there’s a new generation following me, just like my daughters.”

The 157-time NHRA race winner admitted that he now has to reevaluate his previous statements: “I never wanted to get hurt, and I often said that I would stay in the car until my race car caught up with me. I always meant that. But I have been seriously injured.”

With 16 NHRA and one AHRA titles, Force is one of the most successful drag racers in the history of the sport. In 2008, he was inducted into the US Motorsports Hall of Fame, and his team, John Force Racing, has been shaping US drag racing for more than three decades.

However, Force will not disappear from the racetrack entirely. He announced that he would continue to be present at NHRA weekends and develop his team further. With a wink, he even left open a few small exceptions: “I’m going to expand my organization. I’m excited about the direction we’re taking. I love this sport, I love the NHRA.“

”I’m officially done driving, even though that word is hard for me to say. The truth is, I was pulled out of the car in Richmond. Many people thought I was done for at the time. I’m lucky to be able to walk again, even though I’m still under medical supervision.”

Force concluded by saying, “I’m done. I’m not going to say that I’ll never get in the car to warm it up or maybe do a burnout. I don’t know. Maybe it depends on how the fans react. If you cheer loud enough, I’ll hear you.”

Giribuola to Yamaha, Marron to KTM: How the crew chief reshuffle came about

0

KTM is reorganizing its crew chiefs for 2026—Phil Marron takes over Brad Binder—Alberto Giribuola will work for Yamaha in the future and look after Toprak Razgatlioglu

There will be two changes to the crew chiefs at KTM for the 2026 MotoGP season. It all started with Alberto Giribuola’s decision to leave KTM and the Tech3 team. He worked for Enea Bastianini for the last time at the Barcelona race weekend in early September. Xavi Palacin temporarily took over his duties.

Giribuola moved to Pramac-Yamaha and will be looking after Toprak Razgatlioglu’s crew in future. Razgatlioglu originally wanted to bring Phil Marron with him from the Superbike World Championship. They have worked together successfully for years at Puccetti-Kawasaki, Yamaha, and BMW.

However, Yamaha wanted to provide Razgatlioglu with a crew chief with MotoGP experience. Marron last worked in the premier class in 2016. At that time, he was the crew chief for Eugene Laverty in the Aspar Ducati team.

Marron will still be working in the MotoGP paddock in 2026. The Northern Irishman has been hired by KTM. He will be looking after Brad Binder next year. With this personnel change, KTM also hopes that Binder can return to his former form. “I think he’s a strong crew chief,” said KTM Motorsport Director Pit Beirer during the Portugal race weekend on Dorna Sports’ English TV broadcast. “We always look at the project with four bikes and four riders.”

“And we lost a crew chief, so we were able to gain this very strong man who has proven to give a rider a lot of confidence. I think it’s a very good sign that he’s with us now.”

“And maybe it can also help to adjust a few things around Brad to bring him back, because we’re not happy to see Brad struggling so much. Maybe he needs some kind of impetus.”

Marron is already in the paddock at the season finale in Valencia wearing KTM clothing and observing the proceedings in the pits. He will start working for Binder on Monday and will work with him for the first time at the test on Tuesday.

Andres Madrid, who has been Binder’s crew chief since 2021, will move to the Tech3 pit and will look after Bastianini in the future. “Yes, my crew chief for the coming year will be Brad Binder’s crew chief,” the Italian confirmed in Portimao. For Razgatlioglu, the MotoGP adventure began last Monday with a private test day at MotorLand Aragon. Next Tuesday, he will meet all the MotoGP riders at the official test day in Valencia.

It is interesting to note that Giribuola will be in the Yamaha test team’s pit during the Valencia race weekend. Razgatlioglu will continue to work with the V4 Yamaha, which Augusto Fernandez will be riding as a wildcard, next Tuesday.

Giribuola will also be talking to test rider Andrea Dovizioso in the Yamaha test team. The two know each other very well from their years together at Ducati. Giribuola served as crew chief between 2016 and 2020. Dovizioso was runner-up in the world championship three times.
When Miguel Oliveira signed with BMW for the Superbike World Championship, he assumed that Marron would be his crew chief. That will not be the case now.
BMW has hired Andrew Pitt. The former racer was crew chief for Michael Ruben Rinaldi at GMT94-Yamaha in the Supersport World Championship last season. Oliveira will test the BMW for the first time on November 26 and 27 in Jerez.

MotoGP FT1 Valencia 2025: Jack Miller fastest with new tires

0

Some riders put on new tires at the end – Jack Miller fastest ahead of Ai Ogura and Aleix Espargaro – Augusto Fernandez tenth with V4 Yamaha

At the start of practice for the 2025 MotoGP season finale in Valencia, tires were the deciding factor. Some riders opted for new Michelins at the end and significantly improved their times. Jack Miller set the fastest time. Rookie Ai Ogura (Trackhouse-Aprilia) and wildcard starter Aleix Espargaro (Honda) were in the top 3 (see results).

With an outside temperature of just 20 degrees Celsius, it was a cool start to the last race weekend of the season. Due to a lengthy interruption in Moto2 practice, the session started almost half an hour late.

Toprak Razgatlioglu’s former crew chief Phil Marron was on site for the first time in the KTM pit. He will be looking after Brad Binder next year. In return, Andres Madrid is moving to Tech3 and will be looking after Enea Bastianini in future. After around ten minutes, Binder had the first crash of the weekend. He was caught out in turn 8. Six minutes before the end of practice, Fermin Aldeguer (Gresini-Ducati) crashed. The best rookie of the year’s front wheel folded in at Turn 4.

In the final stages, several riders switched to new tires and significantly improved their times. Miller set the fastest time with 1:30.382 minutes. Ogura moved up to second place and wildcard starter Aleix Espargaro (Honda) set the third-fastest time.

Australia winner Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse-Aprilia) also switched to new tires and improved to fourth place. Franco Morbidelli (VR46-Ducati) followed in fifth place on used tires.

Alex Marquez (Gresini-Ducati) stuck with one set of tires. As a result, the vice world champion set his personal best time right at the start of his fifth lap. With this time, Alex Marquez was half a second behind and took sixth place.

The top 10 was completed by Joan Mir (Honda), Pedro Acosta (KTM), Fabio Di Giannantonio (VR46-Ducati), and Augusto Fernandez (Yamaha). The Spaniard is making his third wildcard appearance with the new V4 Yamaha. On Thursday, he confirmed that the engineers are still not releasing any more power. However, a revised chassis was used for the first time. Augusto Fernandez lost a few km/h on the home straight. Nevertheless, he was only 0.653 seconds behind. Francesco Bagnaia had technical problems. Both Ducatis were worked on for a long time in the pits. As a result, he drove slightly fewer laps than most of the other riders. Bagnaia finished 21st, 1.1 seconds behind.

Portimao winner Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) also decided not to use a new rear tire. He was about a second behind and finished in 18th place. His teammate Jorge Martin returned after an injury break.

Martin emphasized beforehand that this weekend was primarily about completing laps and finding his rhythm again. He is not thinking about results, as he also has to serve two long-lap penalties. Martin finished last, one and a half seconds behind. Maverick Vinales (Tech3-KTM) also returned for the season finale. The Spaniard finished 19th, one second behind.

The afternoon practice session starts at 3:00 p.m. As always, this is when the decision will be made as to who qualifies directly for Q2.

Bitter setback for Italy!

The defending champions go into the final round in Bologna severely weakened.

More bitter news for the defending champions ahead of the Davis Cup: in addition to top star Jannik Sinner, the Italian team will also have to do without their second top 10 player in the final round of the international tournament in Bologna (starting November 18).

Lorenzo Musetti withdrew after his exit from the ATP Finals.

“We have decided that I will not participate in the Davis Cup due to my physical condition and family situation,” said Musetti, who is expecting a child in a few days: “Of course, I am very disappointed and regret this very much.” Italy will face Austria in the quarterfinals.

ATP Finals: Musetti’s defeat seals his exit

Musetti, together with Sinner, played an important role in the title wins in 2023 and 2024.

He joined the field for this week’s ATP Finals in Turin late and after an exhausting period – a defeat against world number one Carlos Alcaraz sealed his elimination in the group stage.

The German team will face Argentina on Thursday. Alexander Zverev has announced his participation, making the DTB team one of the favorites.
