Wild exchange of blows after the break: Bournemouth wrestle a point from United

AFC Bournemouth and Manchester United drew on Friday evening. The home side countered two deficits and Maguire was sent off in the second half.

AFC coach Andoni Iraola made two changes after the 0-0 draw against Burnley FC, the second 0-0 draw and the fourth draw in a row. Smith and Kroupi replaced Jimenez and Adli. At the other end, United coach Michael Carrick did not make any personnel changes after the 3-1 win against Aston Villa.

The game did not need a long start: Amad failed to beat AFC keeper Petrovic after just five minutes, and on the direct counter-attack there was not much missing from a cross by Rayan (5′). Manchester then got stronger, but the visitors were unable to get past Petrovic, with the 26-year-old making one good save against Bruno Fernandes (16) and another brilliant one (35).

Bournemouth acted courageously

And when the goalkeeper was beaten once, defender Truffert saved (25). But Bournemouth were unimpressed. Instead of closing in at the back, the home side took control at the end of the first half, but apart from a Truffert volley, they were hardly dangerous up front (36′).

Bournemouth were more active again after the restart, but it was United who took the lead. Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty awarded by Jimenez (59′). Shortly afterwards, the visitors appealed for another penalty, but the referee allowed play to continue and the ball was in the net on the direct counter-attack: Christie got to the ball just 16 meters from goal and placed it in the right corner (67′).

Maguire sent off

However, the equalizer did not last long: four minutes later, the ball fell onto Hill’s head and into his own goal following a corner (71′). What Scott missed by a hair’s breadth with his cross in the 76th minute, Kroupi achieved shortly afterwards. Maguire’s foul on Evanilson not only resulted in a penalty for AFC, but also a straight red for Maguire as the last man. Kroupi stepped up and converted with ease (81′). Bournemouth went for it again in overtime, but failed to score – even in the nine minutes of stoppage time. This took United’s points haul for the season to 51, while it was Bournemouth’s fifth draw in a row.

Bournemouth have a tough task ahead of them on Saturday after the international break (11.4.2026, 1.30pm) when they travel to leaders Arsenal. United face Leeds United two days later, on Monday evening at 9pm.

Despite recent statements: Guardiola promises Trafford appearance in final

Manchester City will play the League Cup final against championship rivals Arsenal on Sunday. Pep Guardiola is relying on his cup goalkeeper in goal – despite his recent statements.

Will the low during the week be followed by a new high on Sunday? Just a few days after losing to Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League, Manchester City have a chance of winning the title at Wembley. The League Cup final against Arsenal is coming up. The pressure on coach Pep Guardiola’s team has increased once again as a result of the European elimination.

Guardiola himself, however, took a completely different view immediately after losing the second clash with Real Madrid. “It’s not decisive, it’s a soccer match, we’ll try to win with a good performance. I’m old enough to know that a defeat is not the end of the world. It’s just a game,” the Catalan had said heading into Sunday.

Meanwhile, it is eagerly awaited who Guardiola will rely on in terms of personnel at the legendary Wembley. One of the most exciting questions was certainly that of the goalkeeper: Will the 55-year-old also rely on his cup goalkeeper James Trafford in the final or will regular keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma move between the posts? A “great moment” awaits him and the entire team. The fact that Trafford had recently publicly admitted his dissatisfaction with his playing time played no role in Guardiola’s decision: “There’s nothing to say. Players can be happy or unhappy – it is what it is. They have to give their best when they play. We’ll have to wait and see what happens at the end of the season.”

Frozen Haaland “had two days off”

Trafford was asked about his role by journalists in mid-February after the 2-0 win in the FA Cup against fourth-division side Salford City. In response, he said: “Of course everyone knows what’s going on with me, so I just have to play as well as I can whenever I get the chance.”

Another Premier League club is said to have approached City for Trafford in the winter, but Guardiola & Co. had ruled out a departure at the time. How things will continue in the summer is completely open. “I take each day as it comes and try to work as hard as I can – and whatever happens, happens,” Trafford also explained: “I have a contract, of course, but I don’t know what will happen next season.”

On Sunday, his first appearance at Wembley awaits him – as it does for Antoine Semenyo. “It’s really, really difficult for all of us to reach a final, no matter what competition it is. We see the level here, in Europe and in other leagues and competitions. It’s a great opportunity because you never know when something like this will come up again,” said Guardiola.

However, Guardiola is in no doubt that Erling Haaland, who was severely disappointed after being knocked out of the CL, will be hungry. “I am convinced that he is just as focused as we all are. I haven’t spoken to him yet, he’s had two days off, but I’m pretty sure he’s ready.”

Cristiano Ronaldo is missing from the Portugal squad

Portugal’s national team coach Roberto Martinez has announced the squad for the Portuguese national team’s international matches at the end of March. Cristiano Ronaldo is missing through injury.

The captain and superstar of the Portuguese national team is not part of the 27-man squad that Martinez called up on Friday for the friendly matches against the two World Cup hosts Mexico (March 28 in Mexico City) and the USA (March 31 in Atlanta).

The 41-year-old attacker will miss the two matches due to a muscle injury to his left thigh, which he sustained at his club Al-Nassr in the league match against Al-Fayha at the end of February. Since then, “CR7” has not played for his club either. However, the injury is not thought to be too serious. Martinez recently spoke of a minor injury that the veteran had sustained. On Friday, Martinez confirmed that he was firmly planning to play the country’s record goalscorer at the World Cup.

According to Martinez, “Cristiano Ronaldo and Goncalo Ramos will share the center forward position” at the finals. In addition, a third striker with a different profile to the captain and the PSG attacker is to be nominated for the World Cup. There is no clear third center forward in the newly nominated squad, but players such as Cristiano Ronaldo’s team-mate Joao Felix or Milan attacker Rafael Leao could also be considered for a central position.

Martinez described the games in Mexico and the USA as “the last opportunity for experiments” before he wants to nominate his World Cup squad in May. West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes has been called up for the first time, while 18-year-old Porto youngster Rodrigo Mora has also been named for the second time and can now hope to make his first appearance for the senior national team.

Portugal will face Colombia and Uzbekistan in Group K at the World Cup, with the third opponent to be determined in the intercontinental play-offs. New Caledonia, Jamaica and the Democratic Republic of Congo are all possible contenders.

Portugal’s squad at a glance:

Goal: Diogo Costa (FC Porto), Rui Silva (Sporting Lisbon), José Sa (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Defense: Matheus Nunes (Manchester City), Joao Cancelo FC (Barcelona), Diogo Dalot (Manchester United), Nuno Mendes (Paris St. Germain), Goncalo Inacio (Sporting Lisbon), Renato Veiga (FC Villarreal), Antonio Silva, Tomas Araujo (both Benfica Lisbon)

Midfield: Ruben Neves (Al-Hilal), Samu Costa (RCD Mallorca), Mateus Fernandes (West Ham United), Vitinha, Joao Neves (both Paris St. Germain), Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United), Rodrigo Mora (FC Porto), Pedro Goncalves (Sporting Lisbon)

Attack: Ricardo Horta (SC Braga), Pedro Neto (Chelsea FC), Goncalo Guedes (Real Sociedad), Rafael Leao (AC Milan), Francisco Conceicao (Juventus Turin), Trincao (Sporting Lisbon), Joao Felix (Al-Nassr), Goncalo Ramos (Paris St. Germain)

Trembling for the World Cup: Gattuso brings back Chiesa and fears for Tonali

Italy’s national coach has called up 28 players for the upcoming play-offs. With Federico Chiesa, one well-known player is back in the squad.

It’s been a while since Liverpool pro Federico Chiesa made an appearance for the Squadra Azzurra. The 28-year-old was in the starting line-up for the 2-0 defeat against Switzerland in the 2024 European Championship round of 16, but since then the winger has been sidelined. It was an unsuccessful tournament for Italy – but now even participation in the next major event is at stake.

In order to jump on the World Cup bandwagon, Italy must first get rid of Northern Ireland in the play-off semi-final next Thursday and then meet the winner of the semi-final between Wales and Bosnia away from home in the final. Two wins are therefore essential if the runners-up in World Cup qualifying Group I are to book their place. Otherwise, Italy could face a third consecutive World Cup without a ticket.

The four-time world champions still have to worry about their key player Sandro Tonali. The Newcastle United midfielder suffered a hip injury in the 7-2 defeat to FC Barcelona in the Champions League, but Eddie Howe’s words on Friday give the Italians hope. “We’ll have to wait and see with Sandro. Maybe it’s not as bad as we initially feared,” said the Magpies coach.

Gattuso is definitely keeping a place in the squad open for Tonali. Cagliari defender Marco Palestra (21) has been called up for the first time, while Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario is not in the squad.

Italy’s squad at a glance

Goal: Elia Caprile (Cagliari), Marco Carnesecchi (Atalanta), Gianluigi Donnarumma (Manchester City), Alex Meret (Napoli)

Defense: Alessandro Bastoni (Inter), Alessandro Buongiorno (Napoli), Riccardo Calafiori (Arsenal FC), Andrea Cambiaso (Juventus), Diego Coppola (Paris FC), Federico Dimarco (Inter), Federico Gatti (Juventus), Gianluca Mancini (Roma), Marco Palestra (Cagliari), Giorgio Scalvini (Atalanta), Leonardo Spinazzola (Napoli)

Midfield: Nicolo Barella (Inter), Bryan Cristante (AS Roma), Davide Frattesi (Inter), Manuel Locatelli (Juventus), Niccolo Pisilli (AS Roma), Sandro Tonali (Newcastle)

Attack: Federico Chiesa (Liverpool), Francesco Pio Esposito (Inter), Moise Kean (Florence), Matteo Politano (Napoli), Giacomo Raspadori (Atalanta), Mateo Retegui (Al-Qadisiya), Gianluca Scamacca (Atalanta).

Tired Berliners shiver their way to victory – Ludwigsburg beats Skyliners by a clear margin

For a long time it looked like a clear defeat for Alba. The Berlin club trailed by 21 points. However, they turned the game around with enormous willpower and an outstanding Malte Delow.

Alba Berlin defeats Rostock after trailing by a clear margin

Only two days after losing to AEK Athens in the Champions League, Alba Berlin narrowly avoided another bitter home defeat in the German Basketball League. Thanks to an improved performance in the second half, the Berliners won 89:85 against the Rostock Seawolves. Alba thus remains second in the table. Berlin’s best scorers were the outstanding Malte Delow with 27 points and Norris Agbakoko with 18 points.

The visitors from Rostock were wide awake from the outset and hit their first three three-point shots. Alba, on the other hand, looked tired. The Berlin club was usually at a disadvantage in rebounding and so repeatedly gave the Seawolves new chances to score. The deficit reached double digits after just six-and-a-half minutes (12:23). However, Berlin continued to trail its opponents too often after that. Rostock usually encountered little resistance when scoring. And Alba also found it very difficult in offense. As a result, the deficit even grew to 19 points in the second quarter (32:51).

After the break, Alba came out of the locker room with far more energy and intensity. Led by Delow, Berlin closed the gap again point by point and tied the scores at 79:79 with just under four minutes remaining. They even took the lead for the first time in the game (85:83) with 96 seconds left. And they took it to the finish line.

Statement victory in the chasing duel: Ludwigsburg rolls over Frankfurt

The MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg made a statement in the important chasing duel in the BBL and defeated Skyliners Frankfurt by a clear 97:65. After an initially evenly poised first quarter, Mikko Riipinen’s team turned on the heat in the second period and laid the foundation for its subsequent home victory with a 27:11 run. Overall, the home side impressed in particular with its depth, as seven players scored in double figures.

Frankfurt kept up well at the start, but finally lost touch in the third quarter at the latest. A 10:0 run by Ludwigsburg put an early end to any hopes of a comeback. In particular the high error rate (18 turnovers) and the weak three-point percentage made it impossible for the visitors to keep the game open.

The victory means the RIESEN (13-11) remain in the race for a direct playoff spot, while Frankfurt (10-15) is under pressure after its third defeat in a row and must not lose touch. The game’s best scorer was Isaiah Swope with 15 points.

After Alex Marquez, Aldeguer also about to leave: Who will ride for Gresini in 2027?

0

Why the Gresini team cannot keep any of its two current riders for the 2027 MotoGP season – future of Alex Marquez and Fermin Aldeguer clarified

Gresini Racing, Nadia Padovani’s MotoGP team, has not yet been able to reach an agreement with Ducati to extend the collaboration that has been in place since 2022. As a result, the Italian private team will lose both riders with a view to the 2027 MotoGP season.

After it was announced that Alex Marquez will move to KTM, where he will replace his Spanish compatriot Pedro Acosta for the 2027 season because Acosta is moving to the Ducati factory team, further news has come to light this weekend in the MotoGP paddock in Goiania (Brazil).

Alex Marquez’s current Gresini teammate Fermin Aldeguer has decided to remain a Ducati rider in the future. He will be paid significantly better in 2027. As the Spanish daily newspaper AS reports, Aldeguer will switch to Ducati satellite team VR46, Valentino Rossi’s racing team.

Gresini still without riders for 2027 – and still without bikes

This double departure leaves the Gresini team, which is owned by Nadia Padovani, without a rider for 2027 – and without bikes for the time being. The team, which was once founded by Fausto Gresini, has not yet managed to secure a new contract with Ducati.

According to information from our colleagues at Motorsport.com Spain, talks between Gresini and Ducati are still ongoing. However, the conditions of the manufacturer from Bologna are currently far removed from the budget available to the private team.

The special thing about 2027 is the new technical regulations with 850cc engines and therefore completely new motorcycles. This in turn means that all riders who will be on a Ducati next year will start the season with the identical specification of the Desmosedici. This is exactly what drives up the price for a potential Ducati satellite team.

Parallel to this, MotoGP promoter MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group (formerly Dorna) is still in open talks with the manufacturers’ association MSMA to extend the current contract between the two parties. The current five-year contract expires at the end of 2026.

This agreement will then determine the amount that each team will receive for participating in the MotoGP World Championship. Only then will Gresini know exactly what budget it can use to negotiate with Ducati and sign riders.

VR46 reaches agreement with Fermin Aldeguer

Before that happens, VR46 has meanwhile taken a step and secured one of the current Gresini riders: Fermin Aldeguer, who they have been courting since 2023. When it was announced that Luca Marini would be leaving his half-brother Valentino Rossi’s team to join the Honda factory team, Ducati made an effort to sign Aldeguer.

Aldeguer then signed a four-year contract with Ducati. It is a two-year contract with an option for a further two years. The contract contains an exit clause for the end of the second season (2026), which the Spaniard will not make use of – despite offers from factory teams.

According to information Motorsport.com Spain has received from Aldeguer’s entourage, he has reached an agreement with Ducati to fulfill the remaining two years of his contract, which runs until 2028. The agreement is accompanied by a significant increase in his salary and bonuses.

“We have not yet signed the new contract, but we have already shaken hands,” confirmed the source, adding: “Fermin will stay with Ducati for another two years. The contract is with the factory and includes the equipment and treatment of a factory rider, and he will receive updates almost at the same time as the factory riders, although we will be racing for the VR46 team.”

Confirmation of this comes from Valentino Rossi’s team. “The interest in Fermin is great and has been known for some time. We think he is a very interesting rider,“ explains VR46 Team Manager Pablo Nieto.

What remains to be seen is who will ride the second VR46 Ducati in the future – a question that, according to Nieto, ”is still completely open at the moment”. The team’s two current riders, Fabio Di Giannantonio and Franco Morbidelli, could be considered, but also “other young riders with potential”, as Nieto explains.

Villeneuve on Estoril coup: “It was the only way to overtake Schumacher”

0

In 1996, Jacques Villeneuve performed a sensational overtaking maneuver against Michael Schumacher around the outside of Estoril – how IndyCar experience helped him

Jacques Villeneuve gives a detailed insight into one of the most famous overtaking maneuvers in Formula 1 history. At the 1996 Portuguese Grand Prix in Estoril, the Canadian took Michael Schumacher by surprise on the outside of the final corner – a masterstroke that Villeneuve had meticulously planned and would probably have become the most legendary moment to this day had it not been for the Jerez finale in 1997.

The Williams driver drew on experience from his time in the IndyCar series. The bend before the start-finish straight reminded him of an oval like Nazareth Speedway due to its slight banking. “In the IndyCar series, you overtake on the outside there because of the banking,” Villeneuve explained on the F1 Beyond The Grid podcast.

He had been announcing the plan to his team all winter, but met with skepticism from his engineer Jock Clear: “He said, ‘Tell us which lap so we can come in with a spoon to pick up the debris.’ That was the extra kick I needed.”

The moment of surprise

The decision was made when both drivers ran into a lapped driver. “Michael slowed down a little to give himself some space. That was my moment,” said Villeneuve. While Schumacher lapped, the Canadian kept his foot on the gas and passed the Ferrari on the outside.

“I thought to myself: I’ll just drive around the outside and surprise him. And that was the only way you could overtake Michael: by surprising him.”

For a long time, there was only an onboard perspective of the scene, which barely captured the scale of the maneuver. According to Villeneuve, it was only years later that exterior shots emerged that put the moment in the right light.

The psychology behind the duel

For him, it was the chance to make the difference: “I wanted to do things that I knew others wouldn’t do. I picked that up from skiing – I jump off this cliff and you don’t.”

The fact that this maneuver succeeded against Schumacher of all people was of particular importance to Villeneuve. He realized early on that the battle with the German required a different approach to the rest of the field. “He knew that I didn’t care. I was neither impressed nor afraid of him – and he wasn’t used to that,” the 1997 world champion analyzes in retrospect.

Despite the intense duels on the track, there was hardly any contact between the two exceptional drivers in private. Villeneuve also attributes this to the special fan constellation in Italy, where his name still carried enormous weight due to his father Gilles Villeneuve’s Ferrari history.

“In Italy, there were fans who were for him and Ferrari, and fans who were also for me, and that tipped the scales a little,” he says of this constellation.

Official: Team Principal Wheatley leaves Audi again, Binotto takes over

Jonathan Wheatley leaves Audi again after less than a year as team principal – Mattia Binotto will take over his duties for the time being

Jonathan Wheatley’s brief stint at Audi is already over. Audi officially confirmed Wheatley’s departure on Friday, saying that he is about to move to Aston Martin to replace Adrian Newey as team principal.

According to a press statement: “On his way to the top of the grid, Audi will make significant changes to its management structure.”

“For personal reasons, Jonathan Wheatley is leaving the team with immediate effect. The team would like to thank Jonathan for his contribution to the project and wishes him all the best for his future endeavors,” the racing team announced.

Wheatley’s duties will be taken over by former Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto. “Mattia Binotto, head of the Audi Formula 1 project, will continue to lead the team and will also assume the duties of Team Principal,” the team confirmed.

“The future structure of the team will be fully defined at a later date as the organization continues to adapt to the changing Formula 1 environment,” Audi said.

“The future structure of the team will be fully defined at a later date as the organization continues to adapt to the changing Formula 1 environment,” Audi said.

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner explains: “We are grateful to Jonathan Wheatley for his contribution to the project during the important phase of entry and wish him all the best for the future. Mattia Binotto and the team will continue on the path we have taken.”

“Our direction remains unchanged: We are concentrating all our efforts on building a high-performance team that will compete for Formula 1 world championships from 2030. To this end, we will continue to develop our organizational structures in order to achieve our common goal in the long term,” said Döllner.

Wheatley only took up his position as Team Principal at the former Sauber racing team on 1 April 2025 – less than a year ago. He had previously worked for Red Bull for almost two decades, where he was Sports Director until his departure at the end of 2024.

This clears the way for Wheatley to move to Aston Martin. Adrian Newey only took over from Andy Cowell as team principal this season. Newey and Wheatley know each other from their time together at Red Bull, where they celebrated great successes together.

MotoGP FT1 Goiania 2026: Pedro Acosta fastest on a damp track

Variable weather on the return to Brazil – Pedro Acosta sets the fastest time in the first practice session on rain tires, just ahead of Jack Miller on slicks

MotoGP returns to Brazil for the first time since 2004 and rides on the modernized race track in Goiania for the first time since 1989. The first practice session was characterized by changeable weather. On a damp track, Pedro Acosta (KTM) set the fastest time on rain tires. Some riders switched to slick tires, including Jack Miller. The Pramac Yamaha rider narrowly missed out on the best time at the end (to the result).

Rain has been the dominant theme so far on the return to Brazil. After rainfall in the morning, the training sessions had to be postponed by an hour. As it is a new track, the first MotoGP practice session was extended by 15 minutes.

At the start of the session, the track had largely dried out, but there were still some damp patches. That’s why everyone initially went out on rain tires. It was slippery, as Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) almost crashed in a highsider on the inspection lap.

Marc Marquez (Ducati) immediately adapted well to the new track. After the first run, he led the classification by six tenths of a second. KTM spearhead Acosta, who came to Brazil as the world championship leader, had a harmless ride into the gravel at the start.

At midday, the sun broke through the dark clouds more and more. At the halfway point, Miller, who was riding his 200th Grand Prix in the premier class, was the first rider to switch to slicks. Marc Marquez remained on rain tires at this point.

The stopwatch showed that rain tires were still the right choice. At the beginning of the last quarter of an hour, Brad Binder also switched to slicks, but the KTM rider’s times were also slower than with rain tires.

Ten minutes before the end of the session, Jorge Martin (Aprilia) set the fastest time on rain tires. Johann Zarco (LCR-Honda), Alex Rins (Yamaha), Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha), Joan Mir (Honda), Luca Marini (Honda) and Diogo Moreira (LCR-Honda) also tried slicks for the final run.

The remaining riders stayed on their used rain tires, which still allowed better lap times than slicks. Marc Marquez displaced Martin from first position again. But in the end, the track made even better times possible.

Acosta set a time of 1:26.688 minutes on his last lap with rain tires and took the lead. Miller showed just how much the conditions had improved. With 17 laps of old slicks, he was only 0.087 seconds slower than Acosta on his final lap.

Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) improved to third place at the end. Marc Marquez finished the session in fourth place. He was followed by Franco Morbidelli (VR46-Ducati), Maverick Vinales (Tech3-KTM), Martin, returnee Fermin Aldeguer (Gresini-Ducati), Bagnaia and Alex Marquez (Gresini-Ducati).

At 2.8 seconds behind, Quartararo was in 22nd and last place. Despite the slippery conditions, there were no crashes during the entire hour. After the practice session, practice starts were again possible on the grid. Many of them had burnouts on the damp patches.

The second practice session starts at 20:00 CET. This will decide who qualifies directly for Q2. The weather forecast remains changeable.

Disappointing comeback for Lys

Eva Lys loses in the first round on her comeback after weeks out through injury

The German tennis player Eva Lys has experienced a disappointing comeback after her two-month injury break.

The 24-year-old, who had not played since the Australian Open at the beginning of the year due to knee problems, lost her opening match at the WTA tournament in Miami to the Ukrainian qualifier Julija Starodubzewa 1:6, 4:6. In addition to Lys, Ella Seidel and Laura Siegemund also failed on Thursday in Florida.

Seidel lost her first round duel against the Austrian Lilli Tagger 7:6 (10:8), 4:6, 5:7. Laura Siegemund missed out on a place in the third round after a 7:6, 3:6, 3:6 against shooting star Alexandra Eala from the Philippines.

Lys back after a long break

After her early exit in the singles at the Australian Open in January and her withdrawal from the doubles due to injury, Lys had announced a longer break, having suffered the injury at the United Cup in Sydney. After 1:17 hours of play, the end was sealed on her return.

Siegemund fought a much longer duel with the Filipino Eala, after 83 minutes the German secured the first set in a tie-break. But then the number 31 seed turned on the heat – and converted her third match point after 3:20 hours. Seidel was also leading 1:0 in sets, but failed in round one, as she had already done in Indian Wells.

Following the defeats of Lys, Siegemund and Seidel, only Tatjana Maria remains in the tournament from a German perspective in Florida.
