Without much glamour, but very effective: Arsenal secures another victory in Bournemouth

In a close game, Arsenal FC prevailed 3-2 against AFC Bournemouth. The decisive player in the end was Declan Rice, who scored twice. The victory temporarily extends the Gunners’ lead at the top of the table.

Arsenal had the chance to pull ahead in the championship race with Manchester City, who don’t play until Sunday at home against Chelsea. To secure the important three points, Mikel Arteta made three changes to the Gunners’ lineup compared to the 4-1 win over Aston Villa. Rice, Gabriel Martinelli, and Madueke started in place of Merino, Saka, and Trossard (all on the bench). On the other side, Andoni Iraola made no changes to the Cherries’ lineup from their 2-2 draw with Chelsea.

Gabriel’s blunder puts Bournemouth in the lead

The game started at a fast pace, but neither team created any real chances early on. Madueke had the first real shot on goal in the 8th minute, but it went over the bar. Shortly afterwards, Gabriel made a disastrous mistake in his own penalty area. He played the ball straight to Evanilson, who only had to tap it into the empty net (10th minute).

However, the home side’s lead did not shock the Gunners for long. In the 16th minute, Bournemouth failed to clear a free kick properly. Madueke dribbled into the penalty area, crossed the ball and found Gabriel, of all people. The Arsenal defender made up for his mistake and slammed the ball into the net to make it 1-1. Nevertheless, the Cherries were the slightly superior team until the break. The best chance fell to the very impressive Tavernier in the 32nd minute, but he put the ball over the bar. So the score remained 1-1 at the break.

Rice scores in Toni Kroos style

The Cherries continued to dominate in the second half and had the first chance after the restart through Brooks (53′). However, Arsenal did what a top team does: the visitors took the lead out of nowhere. Ödegaard laid the ball back to Rice, who slotted it into the bottom right corner with the inside of his right foot from the edge of the box in the best Toni Kroos style (54′). The lead was surprising, but the Gunners deserved their 2-1 lead. Bournemouth couldn’t really get back into the game and it was only a matter of time before the visitors made it 3-1. Ödegaard played the ball into the right side of the box to substitute Saka, who also laid it back for Rice. This chance was even easier than the one that made it 2-1. The Englishman converted from ten meters out with the inside of his right foot.

Kroupi’s goal not enough

With the game seemingly decided, substitute Kroupi took heart. He simply shot from 25 meters out in a central position, leaving Raya with no chance. His long-range shot hit the top left corner of the Gunners’ goal (76′). This brought the excitement back and the Cherries fans whipped their team forward. However, Arsenal didn’t allow any more chances and temporarily extended their lead at the top of the table to six points.

Bournemouth have been waiting for a Premier League win since October 26 and remain in the lower mid-table. The Cherries’ next game is at home against Tottenham on Wednesday (8:30 p.m.). Arsenal play a day later (9 p.m.) in a prestigious clash against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.

First win in 20 games: Bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton celebrate against West Ham

Wolverhampton Wanderers have had a horror season so far, but at the start of 2026 they finally celebrated their first win of the current season, deservedly beating West Ham 3-0.

Wolverhampton Wanderers had gone 23 games without a win in the Premier League across two seasons. The second half of 2025 was a total disaster for the Wolves. After 19 match days, they were languishing at the bottom of the table, 15 points adrift of safety. West Ham therefore traveled to Wolverhampton knowing that a win was a must.

Arias opens the scoring for the Wolves

But 2026 got off to a very positive start for Wolves: they celebrated their first goal in the 4th minute. Hwang dribbled into the penalty area on the left and then crossed to Arias, who slid the ball into the goal from five meters out. This surprise goal did not seem to wake West Ham up. The ball continued to be closer to the Hammers’ goal.
In the 30th minute, the visitors suffered a second blow: after a VAR intervention, referee Peter Bankes pointed to the spot because Magassa had only hit Mané’s foot in the battle for the ball. Hwang took the penalty and remained extremely cool. The South Korean slotted the ball easily into the middle. And that wasn’t all: shortly before half-time, the bottom-of-the-table team made their point. Mané, only 18 years old, dribbled towards the penalty area from the left and then sank a low shot from the edge of the box into the near corner to make it 3-0 at half-time.

Hardly any chances for West Ham in the second half

In the second half, West Ham had significantly more possession, but still didn’t really pose a threat. The Wolves defended selflessly and allowed hardly any real chances. In the end, it remained a deserved 3-0 victory, Wolverhampton’s first win of the current Premier League season. The bottom-of-the-table team earned this victory through good finishing paired with a solid defensive performance.

This brings the Wolves’ points tally to six. However, the first non-relegation spot (Nottingham) is still twelve points away. West Ham also remains in a relegation spot in 18th place. The Hammers are four points away from safety. And on Tuesday (9 p.m.), they face Nottingham Forest in a direct duel at London Stadium. Wolverhampton will face Everton away on Wednesday (8:30 p.m.).

Despite being outnumbered and behind, Mali defeats Tunisia in a penalty shootout

In the preliminary round, Mali earned its place in the round of 16 with three draws. The match against Tunisia also went into extra time. In the end, the West Africans prevailed in the penalty shootout despite being outnumbered for a long time.

With three draws, Mali finished second in Group A of the Africa Cup of Nations and thus qualified for the round of 16. There, Tunisia awaited the West Africans. In order to secure their first victory, Belgian coach Tom Saintfiet rotated his lineup again and fielded a team almost identical to the one that played in the second group match against Tunisia (1-1). Only Dante replaced Gassama. Compared to the last group game against the Comoros (0-0), however, there were five changes, which were now reversed.

Tunisia’s coach Sami Trabelsi, on the other hand, saw less need for action after the 1-1 draw with Tanzania and made only two changes. Sassi and Hadj Mahmoud came on for Achouri and Tounekti. Bundesliga players Gharbi (FC Augsburg) and Skhiri (Eintracht Frankfurt) therefore started in the center again.

Mali makes life difficult for itself

However, the game was not particularly entertaining. Both teams focused on tough tackles, which meant that the game was interrupted repeatedly. Gharbi had Tunisia’s first real chance on goal, but his long-range shot went just wide of the left post (13′).

The game continued to be fragmented, which was only confirmed in the 26th minute. Woyo Coulibaly was far too overconfident when he tackled his opponent Hannibal, hitting him well above the ankle, and was rightly sent off by referee Abongile Tom. Mali then focused on defending and continued to interrupt the game with long treatment breaks. As a result, there was plenty of room for improvement going into the break.

First shot on goal in the 80th minute

The picture hardly changed after the restart, even though Tunisia now clearly dominated the field but was unable to create any danger from its possession. A direct corner from Abdi (56th minute) was the only sign of life from Trabelsi’s team for a long time.

Instead, Mali grew in confidence and broke free on a few occasions, creating a number of counterattacks. One such attack created danger when substitute Nene shot from distance, but he also missed the goal (64′). The first real shot on goal did not come until the 80th minute. The most prominent Tunisian player, Hannibal, curled a free kick from the left towards the near post. However, Mali goalkeeper Diarra managed to clear the ball somewhat awkwardly from the corner.

Tunisia throws away the win

But Tunisia’s salvation came in the 88th minute, with Augsburg’s Saad, who had come on as a substitute shortly before, lifting a long cross onto the head of Chaouat. He sneaked in behind the defense and headed the ball into the goal. The decisive goal? No! Because in the six minutes of added time, Mali actually managed to land a lucky punch. The West Africans thus forced Tunisia into extra time. The game continued in a piecemeal fashion, although a shot from Abdi (98′) in the first half of extra time and a goal from Chaouat (107′) in the second half, which was correctly disallowed for offside, provided a few moments of excitement.

Mali wins on penalties

And so Mali and Tunisia actually had to go to penalties. But although Bissouma initially missed and Nene also failed to score, Mali still forced their opponents to their knees. The reason for this was a miss by Abdi and two strong saves by Diarra against Achouri and Ben Romdhane. The decisive penalty was then scored by former Stuttgart player Touré, sending Mali into the quarterfinals.

The West Africans will continue in the quarterfinals on January 9 (5 p.m.) against Senegal, who won 3-1 against Sudan in their first round of 16 match.

1-0 win against Roma: Atalanta spoils Gasperini’s homecoming

0

Long-time Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini returned to Bergamo this Saturday with his new club, AS Roma. However, in sporting terms, the evening turned out to be a disappointing affair.

Something very special was on the agenda this Serie A Saturday evening: former Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who led Bergamo between 2016 and 2025 to numerous Champions League appearances and the Europa League title in 2024, returned “home” for the first time.

More precisely: the 67-year-old made his mark with his new Roma team on this New Year’s match day in the Italian top flight – and saw his protégés get straight down to business from the start. This included chances for Dybala (1st minute) and Ferguson, who was thwarted by Atalanta keeper Carnesecchi (7th minute).

Scalvini’s goal hits Roma where it hurts

But in the 12th minute, the tables turned – and it was 1-0 for the Bergamo side thanks to Scalvini, who benefited from a mistake by AS keeper Svilar after a corner kick. All he had to do was push the ball over the goal line from close range.

It was a goal with consequences, as the visitors from the “Eternal City” seemed inhibited from then on and were hardly able to create anything up front. Dybala and Soulé lacked ideas, and target player Ferguson was cleanly marked out of the game by the home side’s defense.

And Atalanta’s attack? Here, a visibly surprised Zalewski missed the chance to make it 2-0 against his former club (20′), before the goal was scored by an unmarked Scamacca with a header (28′) – only to be disallowed again after a VAR check lasting several minutes, much to Bergamo’s incomprehension (34′). So it remained 1-0 at half-time for the home side from Lombardy, who only had to survive one more chance from Soulé (39′) to get there.

Too little, too harmless: Giallorossi stutter

Anyone who had been dreaming of a comeback from Roma’s point of view was to be bitterly disappointed. Even in the second half, against a Bergamo side focused solely on defending and managing their narrow lead, the capital club stood out mainly for their acute lack of ideas, apart from plenty of midfield skirmishes. Jokers such as striker Dovbyk and El Shaarawy were also unable to change anything, while Dybala, who played the whole game, remained completely below his potential.

Only Ferguson (50′) had a chance to make it 1-1, but he was thwarted by the alert Carnesecchi. Meanwhile, teammate Soulé had been too stubborn on his way to a possible equalizer (52′). In the end, apart from a narrowly missed Mancini pass from Dybala (90+2), there was no final offensive from Roma. Thus, the return to his old stomping ground for former Bergamo coach Gasperini fell through – and the Giallorossi slipped to fifth place at the same time.

Joint return? Comeback date announced for Wagner brothers

0

While Moritz Wagner has been waiting for his comeback for over a year, his brother Franz’s last NBA game was only a few weeks ago. According to a new report, both are on the verge of making their comeback—possibly even together.

Moritz Wagner’s long saga of suffering is likely to come to an end soon. In December 2024, he tore his cruciate ligament and has not played a single NBA game to date – including the entire 2025 calendar year. His brother Franz is also on his way back to the court. In December – last December, that is – the 24-year-old suffered a sprained ankle.

With just under a week and a half to go before the NBA Global Game in their hometown of Berlin, the Wagner brothers are getting closer and closer to their comeback. During the TV broadcast of the recent Orlando game against the Bulls, well-connected analyst Jeff Turner let slip: “From everything we’re hearing, Moritz and Franz are expected to return next week. That’s great news.”

According to reports, an exact schedule has not yet been set. However, it is conceivable that they could play during the upcoming away trip to Washington and Brooklyn.

Bad news for Magic: Suggs out for weeks

However, the good news comes with some bad news for the Magic. In the loss to the Bulls, point guard Jalen Suggs suffered a bruised medial collateral ligament in his knee, which will keep him out of action for several weeks.

This news is another setback for Orlando, which has already had to contend with numerous injuries this season. After just under a third of the season, the Magic (19-16) are in the middle of the Eastern Conference standings. Of the twelve games without Franz Wagner, they have won only five.

The NBA Berlin Game, in which the Magic will face the Memphis Grizzlies, will take place on January 15 at the Uber Arena in Berlin. It is the first time that a regular NBA season game will be played on German soil.

2026 Dakar Rally: Mattias Ekström wins the prologue

Ford double victory in the prologue of the 2026 Dakar Rally: Mattias Ekström wins ahead of Mitch Guthrie – Loeb not in the top 10 – Canet leads the motorcycles

Mattias Ekström made his mark at the start of the 2026 Dakar Rally. The Swedish Ford factory driver won Saturday’s prologue, narrowly beating his teammate Mitch Guthrie into second place.

The prologue covered a 95-kilometer route around the Saudi port city of Yanbu. As only 22 kilometers counted towards the overall classification, the times at the top of the field were extremely close.

In his V8-powered Ford Raptor, two-time DTM champion Ekström set the fastest time of the day in 10:48.7 minutes. This marks his third prologue victory in five appearances, having already triumphed with Audi in 2023 and 2024. Guthrie finished eight seconds behind Ekström, completing a one-two for Ford at the start of the US brand’s second factory entry.

X-raid driver Guillaume de Mevius finished just two-tenths of a second behind Guthrie in third place, establishing Mini as the closest challenger to the Ford team. De Mevius was once again joined by four-time Dakar winner Mathieu Baumel as his navigator.
For the Frenchman, this marks a remarkable return to active competition after losing his right leg in an accident in January last year. Dakar star Nasser Al-Attiyah led the Dacia contingent, finishing fourth, another three tenths of a second behind De Mevius. Fifth place went to Toyota factory driver Seth Quintero, closely followed by 2025 winner Yazeed Al-Rajhi, who finished sixth in his Overdrive Hilux alongside co-driver Timo Gottschalk.
Sebastien Loeb off to a cautious start

Nine-time World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb got off to a relatively unremarkable start in the Dakar, finishing 17th in his Dacia, more than half a minute behind the leaders.

Unlike in the motorcycle category, the times from the prologue do not count towards the overall standings for the cars. Nevertheless, the results are of strategic importance: the ten fastest drivers from Saturday have the right to choose their starting positions for the first real stage on Sunday in Yanbu. In the motorcycle category, KTM factory rider Edgar Canet secured victory in the prologue, narrowly beating defending champion and brand colleague Daniel Sanders into second place. Canet mastered the mix of sand and stones in 11:31.9 minutes, three seconds faster than Sanders. Behind the KTM duo, Honda rider Ricky Brabec followed in third place.
Luciano Benavides (KTM) and Ross Branch (Hero) completed the top five, while Michael Docherty was the best Rally2 rider in sixth place. Austrian Tobias Ebster (Hero) narrowly missed out on the top ten, finishing eleventh, 45 seconds behind.

Alias, best time, commotion: Kimi Antonelli’s curious undercover mission

Kimi Antonelli took part in a kart race in Milton Keynes during the short Formula 1 winter break – under a pseudonym! Why his cover was blown

The Formula 1 winter break is particularly short this year, with the first test drives for the new season scheduled for January 26 in Barcelona. Nevertheless, some drivers are clearly keen to use their few days off for an additional racing adventure.

This includes Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli. The 19-year-old Italian took advantage of the break to take part in a kart race on the Daytona track in Milton Keynes. However, the Formula 1 rookie, who finished his debut season in the premier class with a total of 150 World Championship points, went incognito at the start.

Antonelli competed under the alias Henry Shovlin. However, the Formula 1 driver missed out on victory in the main race, and for good reason. “He actually received two penalties for pushing too hard, which meant he didn’t make it onto the podium in the end,” kart track employee Daniel Prince revealed to BBC Three Counties Radio.

“But he drove the fastest lap of the race – with a lead of at least three seconds.” By this point, it was clear that the Italian was no ordinary participant. When Antonelli subsequently took off his helmet, the secret was finally revealed.

“Everyone literally pounced on him, so a staff member quickly took him to safety and put him behind the counter—for a cheeky photo in front of our celebrity leaderboard. Then he took off and disappeared,” adds Prince.

Kimi Antonelli celebrates three podium finishes in 2025

Antonelli made it onto the podium three times in Formula 1 last year: in Canada, Sao Paulo and – thanks to McLaren’s disqualification – Las Vegas, the rookie finished in the top 3 each time. The Mercedes driver had been struggling with a significant dip in form in the meantime.

“But we never doubted his speed, his talent, and his abilities,” emphasized Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff in a debrief video from the Formula 1 team. “In Formula 1, you are literally accused of being a cannibal.”

“There’s enormous media pressure, responsibility towards Mercedes—towards the many people who give their all to provide you with an engine and a car,” added the Austrian. “And I think that was exactly the learning process, especially in the middle of the season, particularly in Europe, where everyone wanted something from you.”

“And he’s a good person. That’s why he didn’t want to say no to anyone,” Wolff praised. “Overall, I would say: a good season with many learning moments, a strong foundation to build on and start 2026 with a new car – new for everyone. And you know what to expect.”

After just one season: Ferrari parts ways with reserve driver Guanyu Zhou

0

Guanyu Zhou’s Formula 1 career appears to have come to a definitive end: Ferrari is parting ways with the Chinese reserve driver after just one season.

Ferrari is parting ways with reserve driver Guanyu Zhou after just one season. The 26-year-old Chinese driver, who was part of the Ferrari Driver Academy from 2014 to 2018, was signed as a reserve driver at the end of 2024 after losing his regular cockpit at Sauber.

Now Zhou’s Formula 1 career appears to be over for good. “Grateful for Zhou Guanyu’s commitment and contribution as Ferrari Reserve Driver this season! We wish him all the best for the future,” the team wrote in a social media post on Friday.

The 26-year-old had hoped that his presence in the Formula 1 environment would improve his chances of securing a cockpit for 2026. His main focus was on Cadillac’s new Formula 1 team, which will enter the premier class this year as the eleventh racing team. “I definitely have the hunger to get back into a race car, to get a full-time cockpit in Formula 1,” Zhou told F1.com at the start of the 2025 season. “As far as the long-term goal is concerned, it’s very clear and very straightforward. I’m sure everyone knows that.”

“But I also think that in years like this, it helps to settle down, and yet it’s a very important role. It’s not like I feel left out as a reserve driver. I feel like I have a very big responsibility within the team.”

“You’re there to win races, you continue to make your mark. That’s why it’s very important, and everything counts here. I’ll continue to work hard for it. But if there’s a chance, an opportunity, there’s no doubt I’ll fight for it – for a comeback.”

However, that didn’t happen in the end: Cadillac decided to sign former Red Bull driver Sergio Perez and ex-Sauber driver Valtteri Bottas. This means that Zhou is once again without a contract for 2026. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the Chinese driver after his departure from Ferrari.

From a photo finish to a record pole position: the 2025 DTM in numbers

0

2025 will go down in history as one of the most memorable DTM years ever, as evidenced by the numbers and statistics that have surprised even the experts.

The 2025 DTM season, with the title decided in the final meters, was so spectacular that it is worth looking back at it even at the beginning of the new year. This is also confirmed by the figures for the past season: Did Ayhancan Güven really achieve the closest finish of the year in Sunday’s race at Hockenheim?

Which driver achieved the pole position with the biggest lead of the season? Who set a new pole record? Which team completed the fastest DTM pit stop of the season? And how many spectators were counted in the stands in total?

With races in three countries, the 2025 DTM season not only delivered a heated championship battle and high tension right up to the end, but also numerous interesting and surprising statistics that tell their own story.

Manthey Porsche driver Güven not only gave DTM fans a finale that no one will forget anytime soon, but also set a new record in the GT3 era with his moment of glory at Hockenheim.

A new record was also set in the Mercedes-AMG camp, even though Lucas Auer, who led the championship for most of the season, ultimately fell just short of the title. However, no one could hold a candle to the Landgraf Mercedes driver in another discipline.

All this is evident from a final look at the fifth GT3 year of the DTM – and the third under the leadership of the ADAC. And their extraordinary figures.

Criticism of “Battle of the Sexes”

The “Battle of the Sexes” between Nick Kyrgios and Aryna Sabalenka before the turn of the year did not go down well with Iga Swiatek at all.

Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek has once again sharply criticized the “Battle of the Sexes” between Nick Kyrgios and Aryna Sabalenka.

“I didn’t watch it because I don’t watch things like that,” said the world number two about the exhibition match between the holidays in Dubai, which the eccentric Kyrgios easily won 6-3, 6-3 against the world number one.

“I’m sure it attracted a lot of attention. It was entertainment, but I wouldn’t say it had anything to do with social change or important issues,” Swiatek said in Sydney, where she is starting her season at the United Cup.

Swiatek: “We don’t have to compare ourselves to men’s tennis.”

“I think the name was just the same as Billie Jean King’s match in 1973. That’s it. There were no other similarities, because I think women’s tennis is now independent,” added Swiatek. 52 years after Billie Jean King’s legendary victory over Bobby Riggs, the press had already torn the exhibition match apart, but the protagonists themselves were satisfied.
“We have so many great athletes and great stories to tell that we don’t necessarily have to compare ourselves to men’s tennis,” said Swiatek: “Honestly, there doesn’t have to be any competition.”
Swiatek praises United Cup

The six-time Grand Slam winner, who is aiming for her first Australian Open title in the coming weeks, sees the upcoming United Cup much more as an opportunity to celebrate men’s and women’s tennis together.

“Events like this bring tennis together […] and make our sport better,” said the 24-year-old.
