Mexico’s World Cup test at the Azteca Stadium overshadowed by death

Mexican fans won’t get to see Cristiano Ronaldo or score any goals at the reopening of the Azteca Stadium. The World Cup test is overshadowed by a tragic death.

The World Cup anticipation in the three host countries was dampened on Saturday: while the USA went down 5-2 to Belgium and Canada had to make up for a 2-0 draw against Iceland, Mexico’s World Cup test against Portugal did not get anyone off their seats. In a game with very few highlights, the two teams ended up drawing 0-0.

However, both Javier Aguirre and Roberto Martinez had major injury concerns to contend with. The Mexican fans, who had been looking forward to seeing Cristiano Ronaldo in particular, were disappointed in the run-up to the game. Due to a muscle injury in his thigh, the striker, who is under contract in Saudi Arabia, did not even make the international trip.

In the absence of CR7, Portugal’s offense disappointed, with PSG attacker Goncalo Ramos having the best chance, but he only hit the post in the 26th minute.

Fall from the second floor to the ground floor

It was supposed to be a day of celebration for Mexico: The World Cup endurance test against Portugal was finally used as an opportunity to reopen the legendary Azteca Stadium. However, the return was overshadowed by a death.

According to the local authorities, a drunken Mexican fan fell to his death. He had apparently wanted to jump over the outer parapet from the second to the second floor of the VIP. However, he fell to the first floor. All rescue attempts by the paramedics present were unsuccessful.

Five World Cup matches at the Azteca Stadium

The Azteca Stadium had been closed for almost two years in preparation for the World Cup. Renovation work began in May 2024 – and has now been completed two and a half months before the start of the tournament. The historic venue, which hosted the 1970 and 1986 World Cup finals, will host a total of five matches during the 2026 World Cup. These include three preliminary round matches and two knockout matches.

At the start of the tournament, all eyes will be on the Azteca Stadium, as Mexico will play their opening match against South Africa there on June 11. This will be followed by the clash between Uzbekistan and Colombia (June 18) and the match between hosts Mexico and a European representative – Denmark and the Czech Republic will determine their opponents in the play-offs.

Nine days before Bayern game: Brazil also fear for Vinicius Junior

The current international season is not going well for Brazil: After two injury-related departures, coach Carlo Ancelotti is now also worried about Vinicius Junior for the Croatia game on Wednesday.

The club coaches are watching the Brazilian national team’s international tour of the USA with particular concern these days. After the 2-1 defeat to France in Foxborough in the US state of Massachusetts, there was already two pieces of really bad news: According to FC Barcelona, they will have to do without key player Raphinha for at least five weeks at a crucial stage of the season.

The latter suffered a right thigh injury against the 2018 world champions and will miss three immensely important matches against Atletico Madrid – two of them in the Champions League quarter-finals. Raphinha’s national team colleague Wesley, who is a permanent fixture at AS Roma and has started 24 Serie A games, also had to travel back to Italy early with a muscle injury.

Call-up against Croatia on the cards

However, Real Madrid’s officials and doctors have also been on alert since Friday at the latest. Leader Vinicius Junior has not been training with the team since the France game. According to the Brazilian portal Globo Esporte, his participation in the second US test against Croatia on Wednesday (2:00) at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando (Florida) is on the cards.

Until now, Vinicius Junior has only completed exercises in the gym and not on the pitch. The eccentric striker spent 90 minutes of the test against France on the pitch before reportedly feeling pain in his thigh due to the physical strain. According to the Brazilian Football Association (CBF), Vinicius Junior is currently suffering from “a normal case of stress management”. Is this really just a precautionary measure or something more?

Ral Madrid in particular will want to avoid risk. With the Whites still four points behind Barcelona in La Liga, they need their in-form striker. In addition, a tough Champions League home game against FC Bayern awaits in just nine days’ time, with the Blancos playing at the Allianz Arena eight days later. A loss would come at the worst possible time.

France is a stranger in the USA: “I’ve never seen this before in my life”

In order to get to know the conditions and circumstances for the World Cup in the summer, the French national team is currently completing its training course in the USA. Coach Didier Deschamps has now drawn a skeptical interim conclusion.

In purely sporting terms, Didier Deschamps can actually be satisfied with how the international trip to the USA has gone so far. The Equipe Tricolore won the endurance test against Brazil despite being short-handed for a long time after Dayot Upamecano was shown red, while Hugo Ekitiké harmonized surprisingly well with captain Kylian Mbappé in an unfamiliar role on the left wing. And yet the French national coach drew a mixed conclusion on Saturday – mainly due to the conditions on site.

The French team, who will play their three group games at the World Cup in New Jersey, Philadelphia and Foxborough in the north-east of the USA this summer, wanted to take a close look at the current training course to get a feel for the final round. For Deschamps, this test run is anything but euphoric. “We have problems with the journey,” he said at the press conference on Saturday. “Not because of the distance, but because of the time.” The traffic is so heavy that the schedule may not be adhered to and training sessions may have to be postponed.

In addition, the coach, who is about to play his last major tournament with the national team, criticized the fact that although they cannot train in the stadium, media activities are held there. “We have to train on a different pitch, but we have to go to the stadium for media appointments. There is only a 45-minute break in between,” explains Deschamps. This leads to organizational problems.

The current political situation in the USA is also causing delays. “It takes a long time at the airport,” complained Deschamps. “There are checks like I’ve never seen in my life.” He had already observed something similar at the Club World Cup last summer: “I spoke to the players who were there and they reported some situations with complications – sometimes more, sometimes less.”

Deschamps is critical of kick-off times at the World Cup

Excitement for the finals sounds different. And Deschamps fears that other problems could arise at the World Cup that the French team is not yet facing on the current trip. “The temperatures will be different in the summer,” explained the 57-year-old coach. “The heat will require intensive recovery phases. Then there are the kick-off times.”

France will play their three group matches against Senegal, the winner of the intercontinental play-off between Iraq and Bolivia and Norway in the afternoon in the USA. Deschamps fears that the temperatures will not have cooled down sufficiently by then.

Les Bleus will conclude their current international tour on Sunday evening against Colombia, led by Bayern star Luis Diaz. The game will be played at Northwest Stadium near the US capital Washington. Afterwards, Deschamps will draw an overall conclusion – and possibly also conclusions for the organization during the tournament in the summer.

Oyarzabal again and again: “If someone says we don’t have a killer …”

One of the few identified weaknesses in the Spanish national team is no longer a weakness. In Mikel Oyarzabal, the Seleccion has a world-class center forward – although he is not actually one.

While the German fans were enchanted by Florian Wirtz during the DFB team’s 4:3 win in Switzerland, Mikel Oyarzabal enchanted the Spanish supporters in faraway Villarreal. In the 16th minute, the Spaniard scored with a powerful left-footed shot from twelve meters to give his side the lead against Serbia, but his second goal was even more beautiful. In the 43rd minute, Oyarzabal fired the ball into the corner from 18 meters almost from a standing start. Two cream goals that no longer surprise anyone in the Seleccion.

The striker, who has played for Real Sociedad since his youth and has never left the team from the Basque country, has an impressive international record. In the last nine Seleccion games in which he has started, Oyarzabal has scored 16 times (ten goals, six assists). Since 2025, he has scored eleven goals and contributed six assists in eleven games, topped only by Norway’s Erling Haaland with 19 points in the national team. With his 24 goals in 52 international appearances, Oyarzabal is ninth in the Spanish all-time list, two goals behind Emilio Butragueno.

From playmaker to striker

Oyarzabal is not a trained striker, but actually a winger or one for the ten position. But Oyarzabal is versatile, which his national team coach also appreciates. “I’ve known him since 2015, when he was still playing as a playmaker. He simply does everything right,” said Luis de la Fuente after the 3-0 win against Serbia. Spain’s selection coach believes that he and Oyarzabal could one day be colleagues. “He could be a great coach, the way he understands soccer. He belongs to the world class.”

The scorer of the winning goal in the Euro 2024 final against England (2:1) has nipped the debate about Spain’s lack of a center forward in the bud. “If someone says we don’t have a killer …”, mocked de la Fuente after the game. “We can count ourselves lucky, and not just with Mikel.” Oyarzabal is also scoring a number of important goals, including in the Nations League. “When the spotlight is on him, he’s there. And as the national team heads towards the World Cup, his name is being mentioned louder and louder as the one who should be the offensive reference from day one,” wrote Spanish Sport.

Oyarzabal, meanwhile, is only making very soft noises. “I’m happy to be here, to gain match practice and to be able to help the team. If it’s necessary, like today with goals – and if it’s necessary in other ways, then in other ways. I always try to keep the team’s well-being in mind,” said the player of the match, getting lost in the usual phrases. But who cares when everyone talks about him so often after Seleccion matches …

Strong Kharchenkov: Arizona moves on to the Final Four

Basketball talent Ivan Kharchenkov has reached the Final Four of March Madness. The former Bayern Munich pro defeated the Purdue Boilermakers 79:64 with the title favorites Arizona Wildcats in the quarterfinals in San José.

The showdown between the best four college teams in the USA in Indianapolis (April 4-6) could therefore see a German win the championship for the first time since 2014.

Kharchenkov, who is playing his first year at university, scored a strong 18 points (7/11) and grabbed eight rebounds against 2 seed Purdue. In the semi-finals, Arizona will face either the Michigan Wolverines led by German Malick Kordel or the Tennessee Volunteers. Their quarter-final clash is scheduled for Sunday (8:15 p.m.).

The Wildcats trailed by eight points at half-time (30:38), before the team completely dominated after the break. In the end, Kharchenkov’s team won the second half by a clear 48:26. The best scorer in the game was Koa Peat with 20 points (9/18).

In the second game last night, potential lottery pick Keaton Wagler led the Illinois Fighting Illini into the top four. The 19-year-old scored a strong 25 points on 8/17 shooting.

The last German NCAA victory was twelve years ago

The last time world champion Niels Giffey won the championship title was twelve years ago alongside his German teammate Leon Tolksdorf with the Uconn Huskies, which Giffey had previously won together with Enosch Wolf in 2011. Other German college champions include 1993 European champion and later national coach Henrik Rödl (North Carolina Tar Heels/1993), Christian Ast (Duke Blue Devils/1991 and 1992) and Magnus Pelkowski (Indiana Hoosiers/1987).

Meanwhile, national player Clara Bielefeld advanced to the quarterfinals in the women’s competition. The TCU Horned Frogs defeated the Virginia Cavaliers 79-69 in the round of 16, but the 18-year-old did not make an appearance. The playmaker was already part of the German European Championship squad last year and has a good chance of playing in the upcoming home World Championships in Berlin (September 4-13).

“Knew I was going to crash”: Martin crashes after winning the jubilant wheelie

Sprint victory in Austin, world championship lead and then a crash on the final lap – what Jorge Martin says about this faux pas and his correct tire choice

Jorge Martin returned to the top of the MotoGP standings in the sprint race at the Circuit of The Americas in the USA and showed that last weekend’s podium finishes in Brazil were not a one-off

The Aprilia factory rider was the only rider to opt for the medium rear tire for the sprint in Austin. A choice that had already become apparent after practice, as he said on Friday that the handling was not optimal with the soft rear tire.

“Well, the soft changes the balance of the bike enormously. It feels like a completely different bike. And I can feel that it understeers all the time.” By this, Martin means that the additional grip exerts too much pressure on the front wheel (“pushing the front”).

“Yes, I think so. Sometimes I still don’t really understand the Aprilia. Whether it’s understeer or whether it’s sliding too much. So, I feel that the front doesn’t give any grip. But I still don’t really understand what I need from the bike with the Aprilia.“

The medium rear tire was therefore the right decision for Martin, because: ”I had a lot of reserve under braking throughout the race until I really needed it.” However, it did not look like victory until shortly before the end of the race.

On the seventh lap, he was overtaken by his teammate Marco Bezzecchi, but the Italian crashed one lap later in turn 11. From this point on, Martin was second, around 1.2 seconds behind Ducati rider Francesco Bagnaia.

“When Marco overtook me, I knew he was a bit faster. But as soon as he overtook me, I saw that he was slowing me down. Then I said to myself: Okay, I’m faster with the medium now.“

”And when he crashed, I just saw that ‘Pecco’ was falling back a bit. Then it was time to take full risk and give it everything.” At the beginning of the last lap, Martin had caught up with last year’s winner.

He finally attacked at the end of the long back straight before turn 12. In this maneuver, the reserve that Martin had in the braking phase was crucial: “For me, it was really at the absolute limit, because the front wheel was wandering and I didn’t know if I could still stop.”

“Maybe he would have crossed or something. I saw that Marco was very strong in turn 11, but then he crashed. I was very strong in turn 1. I actually caught up too late there. Overall, the feeling and balance of the bike was always better with the medium.”

Martin crashes during the wheelie on the final lap

This was the first time Martin had won a race as an Aprilia rider. It was his first sprint win since Malaysia in autumn 2024. With his 17th sprint win, the Spaniard is now once again the sole record holder in Saturday’s races.

He only made one mistake, and that was on the final lap. Martin drove along the back straight with a wheelie. When the front wheel touched the ground again, he suddenly crashed.

“It was full risk. I knew that I would crash at some point during the wheelie, because I did a wheelie in second gear and then in third. I saw that it wasn’t going up. I could no longer control the front wheel.”

“Fourth gear, and as soon as I touched the ground, I just crashed. I apologize to the team. But today they will be happy to work. So no problem. Yesterday in the team meeting I told them to forget about winning.“

”I just wanted to get podiums and good results, build confidence, and today we are in first place. Austin was actually an important race for me, with question marks, so to speak.“

”Because I didn’t know how the bike would react on this really strange track. But we are competitive. We will be fast all season long,” says Martin optimistically about the upcoming races.

Martin takes the world championship lead: does he believe he has a chance?

Since Bezzecchi crashed, Martin has also taken over the world championship lead with a one-point advantage for the first time since winning the title with Pramac-Ducati in 2024. For Bezzecchi, it was the second major blunder this year after the crash in the Thailand sprint.

“I braked about seven to eight meters later,” said Bezzecchi, describing the decisive moment. “The rear wheel was destabilized and because of this wobble I didn’t decelerate enough, but I turned anyway and lost the front wheel.”

While Bezzecchi had to collect himself on Saturday evening after a setback, as he did in Thailand, Martin was more euphoric than at any time since his world championship win. “But yeah, well, it’s crazy,” he says about the rollercoaster ride of emotions.

“You can’t imagine how low I was last season, how disconnected from this world, from MotoGP. I really didn’t want to come back. And now I’m here. So happy, so grateful to Aprilia.“

”They are helping me enormously to get back to my level. So thank you very much! I always try to develop myself further. And we are now two years ahead, so I am better than in 2024, but everyone is better. The level is always rising, MotoGP is like that.”

Martin doesn’t want to think about a world championship opportunity this early in the season: “No, I’m not even thinking about the world championship for 24 hours. Just race by race, day by day, and then we’ll see in November whether we have a chance.”

MotoGP Sprint Austin 2026: Marquez crashes with “Diggia” – Jorge Martin wins

Marc Marquez crashes while attacking Fabio Di Giannantonio and also brings him down – Marco Bezzecchi retires due to crash – Jorge Martin wins ahead of Bagnaia

Aprilia works rider Jorge Martin won a turbulent sprint at the US Grand Prix on the Circuit of The Americas in Austin. On the last lap he overtook Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) and took the lead in the World Championship. Pedro Acosta (KTM) crossed the finish line in third place, but lost the podium due to a tire pressure penalty.

For the short ten-lap race, everyone opted for the medium front tire. With the exception of Martin, who had also chosen the medium rear tire, everyone rode with the soft rear tire.

At the start, Bagnaia took the lead in turn 1 ahead of Acosta and Marc Marquez (Ducati), but Fabio Di Giannantonio (VR46-Ducati) attacked in turn 7 and snatched third place. Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) had dropped back to seventh place in the starting phase.

On the first lap, Marc Marquez attacked Di Giannantonio at the end of the long straight and missed him on the inside. The world champion crashed at the apex and also knocked the Italian to the ground. Both continued the race at the back of the field.

After the first lap, Bagnaia led ahead of Acosta, Joan Mir (Honda) and the Aprilia duo. Bagnaia was able to pull away from his pursuers by around a second in the first three laps. Martin put Mir under pressure and overtook him at the start of the fourth lap. This put Martin in third place.

The former world champion was on the advance. On the long straight, he also overtook Acosta and was the new runner-up. At this point, Bagnaia was leading by 1.3 seconds. Bezzecchi also got stronger, overtaking Mir and Acosta and working his way up to third place.

At the halfway point of the race, Bagnaia continued to lead the Aprilia duo by around one and a half seconds. Four laps before the end of the race, Bezzecchi overtook his teammate Martin in turn 11, who then also failed to counterattack at the end of the long straight.

Exactly one lap later, Bezzecchi crashed in turn 11 and was out of the race. The Italian was annoyed about his mistake. He had already crashed out in the sprint at the season opener in Thailand.

Decision for victory on the last lap

At the start of the last lap, Mir, who was in fourth place, crashed in turn 1. Bagnaia only had a lead of eight tenths of a second for the last lap, but this quickly dwindled. At the end of the long straight, Martin outbraked the Ducati and took the lead.

For the first time since the fall of 2024, Martin won a sprint again. He won for the first time with Aprilia and thus also took the world championship lead one point ahead of Bezzecchi (to the world championship standings). With 17 sprint wins, the Spaniard is once again the sole record holder in this classification.

On the final lap, Martin experienced an unusual moment of shock. He did a wheelie down the long back straight. When the front wheel touched down on the asphalt, it locked and Martin crashed. He could hardly believe his faux pas, but took it with humor.

“Rodeo time, baby!” says Martin with a laugh. “I’m super happy. My first MotoGP win here – fantastic. I haven’t ridden here for two years and have missed it. The decision to go for the medium tire was perhaps risky, but I knew it was the right one.“

”I had to wait until the last lap. I’ve never won a race like this in MotoGP. Winning another sprint means a lot to me. Thanks to Aprilia – a great team, they are helping me a lot to find my level again.”

Bagnaia was narrowly beaten into second place. “I tried to ride a bit more calmly after the first lap, after pushing quite hard at the start,” he said of his race. “I wanted to build up a small lead for the end.”

“In the end, I had problems with the soft rear tire. Nevertheless, I am very happy about the hard work we are doing. We deserve a result like this. Thanks to the team, we’ll try to make another step tomorrow.”

Ride pressure penalty costs Acosta third place

Acosta finished third, but the KTM rider was investigated for the minimum pressure in the front tire. “That’s just the way it is,” he commented succinctly. “I already knew after qualifying that it would be difficult to beat the Aprilias and Ducatis.”

“But I think we did a good job, the KTM works quite well here. We can definitely be satisfied.” After the race, the tire pressure penalty was confirmed. The time penalty of eight seconds was Acosta back in eighth place

So Enea Bastianini (Tech3-KTM) inherited third place, who prevailed in the duel against Alex Marquez (Gresini-Ducati). Luca Marini (Honda) finished fifth, followed by Ai Ogura (Trackhouse-Aprilia) and Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse-Aprilia) (to the result).

Johann Zarco (LCR Honda) scored one championship point in ninth behind Acosta. Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) finished eleventh. Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pramac-Yamaha) retired at the halfway point with a technical problem.

Marc Marquez was lapped and finished 17th and last. Di Giannantonio had retired prematurely in the pits. Marquez received a long lap penalty for the Grand Prix for the accident. Diogo Moreira (LCR Honda) retired with a clutch failure. Alex Rins (Yamaha) crashed in turn 1.

After qualifying, two riders were penalized and moved back two positions on the grid for the Grand Prix. Marini had gone off the gas before turn 12, Bezzecchi directly behind him as well.

Marc Marquez was behind him on a flying lap and was hindered as a result. Both Italians received penalties for this situation. Bezzecchi will start fourth on Sunday and Marini eleventh.

IndyCar Barber 2026: Only fractions were missing – Mick Schumacher out in Q1

Mick Schumacher also fails at the Q2 hurdle on the first permanent circuit of the year – Massive impact from Will Power – Pole for old acquaintance

Mick Schumacher (RLL-Honda) was also eliminated in Q1 of the first race of the 2026 IndyCar season on a permanent circuit. The son of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher did not finish higher than tenth in his group at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama, which means 20th place on the grid. (Q1 result, Group 2)

Schumacher had a very difficult group. He was even on course for Q2 in the first two sectors, but lost a tenth of a second in the dip in the third sector, which ultimately put him in the knockout zone. In the end, he was 0.093 seconds short of making it into the “Fast 12”. (Starting grid)

The fact that Scott McLaughlin (Penske-Chevrolet; 14th), another big name who drove in the replacement car after his serious accident in the second free practice session, was eliminated shows just how difficult it was. With Kyle Kirkwood (Andretti Honda; 5th), David Malukas (Penske Chevrolet; 2nd), Romain Grosjean (Coyne Honda; 6th), Josef Newgarden (Penske Chevrolet; 9th), Marcus Ericsson (Andretti Honda; 8th) and Patricio “Pato” O’Ward (McLaren Chevrolet; 12th), six real heavyweights progressed.

The difficult group is all the more bitter for Mick because his team-mate Graham Rahal (RLL-Honda; 3rd), who had caught the other group, sensationally steered his car into Q3, eliminating some of the top favorites in the process. As in Phoenix, he made it onto the second row of the grid. Schumacher’s other team-mate, Louis Foster (RLL-Honda; 22nd), finished behind the German and was also eliminated in Q1.

The other two rookies, Dennis Hauger (Coyne-Honda; 24th) and Caio Collet (Foyt-Chevrolet; 21st), also finished behind Mick Schumacher. Scott Dixon (Ganassi-Honda; 13th) also failed to make it past Q1.

However, Schumacher’s task in Sunday’s race will be even tougher, as Barber Motorsports Park is one of the tracks where overtaking is extremely difficult. The hope now lies in a potentially chaotic race, as is often the case in IndyCars.

Schumacher had caused a surprise in the second free practice session, which had to be stopped early due to the McLaughlin accident, with a longer lead, but was unable to take this form into qualifying. He was in penultimate place for a long time before his final lap made him a serious Q2 contender for a long time.

There was also a hairy moment in qualifying when Will Power (Andretti Honda; 23rd) slammed head-on into the tire stack on his first flying lap, presumably with brake failure on the rear axle in the hairpin. The accident was reminiscent of Michael Schumacher’s crash at Silverstone in 1999, although the accelerator pedal was clearly not stuck.

“The brake pedal simply failed. We will find the problem. It’s not a big deal. I thought we would make it into the Fast 6, or at least the Fast 12. We’ve already had a few accidents this year. Unbelievable, but that’s how it goes sometimes,” says the veteran.

The pole position was secured by Alex Palou (Ganassi-Honda; 1st), who took an extra set of fresh soft tires and therefore accepted a small disadvantage for the race in order to be at the front in qualifying. The Children’s of Alabama Grand Prix starts on Sunday evening at 19:17. The time changeover must be taken into account.

Jos Verstappen: “I’m afraid Max will lose his motivation”

Jos Verstappen is sounding the alarm: what if his son Max Verstappen really loses motivation? Because the criticism of the current Formula 1 is justified

Father racing driver Jos Verstappen is worried about his son Max Verstappen and his future in Formula 1. In an interview with de Telegraaf, he said: “To be honest, I’m afraid that Max will lose his motivation. Driving a Formula 1 car used to be the greatest thing ever for him, but at the moment I’m pretty pessimistic about that.”

The reason for this is the new Formula 1 regulations, which force drivers to manage the energy available to them instead of constantly driving at the limit. Max Verstappen has repeatedly criticized “the new Formula 1”.

Why Jos Verstappen thinks like Max Verstappen

Now his father Jos Verstappen said: “You can tell very quickly that he doesn’t enjoy driving these cars at all. And I can completely understand his frustration.”

“A driver should be rewarded for his courage and skill. But now it’s the case that you’re even slower over a lap if you attack a corner to the maximum. That takes away the whole feeling of racing.”

The new Formula 1: Is it just “chaos”?

Jos Verstappen is also annoyed by the “yo-yo racing” of the first laps of the race: Drivers swap positions back and forth seemingly at random. The former Formula 1 driver is annoyed by “overtaking maneuvers halfway down the straight because the other driver has no energy left. Sorry, but that has nothing to do with overtaking,” said Jos Verstappen.

Max Verstappen thinks similarly – and has already indicated several times that he might reconsider his continued involvement in Formula 1 if the rules do not change drastically. Jos Verstappen said: “I wish it wasn’t like that, but with a view to his future, I definitely see it as a problem.”

Max Verstappen is currently still under contract with Red Bull until 2028. However, the current drive format is likely to remain in place until at least 2029.

Jos Verstappen: Max simply says what he thinks

Is that the reason why Max Verstappen is so vehemently opposed to the new rules? “You have to remember that he simply answers the questions he is asked honestly,” said Jos Verstappen.

“You should be happy that Max is so direct. Or do we only want yes-men in this sport? Or drivers who say everything is great, even though they don’t mean it?”

“Above all, I’m glad that Max just says what he thinks. He’s my son, but I think we should appreciate that there are still drivers like him around.”

How Max reacts to Jos Verstappen’s statements

When asked about his father’s statements, Max Verstappen assured: “I always give my all when I’m in the car. But in the current situation, I’m not enjoying it. And others feel the same. When you spend so much time away from home for 22 races, you have to do something that gives you real pleasure.“

According to Verstappen, every top performance ”starts with fun. If that’s missing, you can’t get the best out of yourself,” says the Formula 1 driver.

So how does Verstappen motivate himself when the fun isn’t there at the moment? “I try to keep it interesting with other things. But at some point, even that doesn’t work anymore,” said Verstappen. “So let’s see what happens next.”

Sabalenka follows in Graf’s footsteps

Aryna Sabalenka proves that she is currently the measure of all things in women’s tennis. She achieves something special with the title in Miami.

Around two weeks after her triumph in Indian Wells, Aryna Sabalenka has won the next 1000 event. In the final of the WTA tournament in Miami, the defending champion defeated the American Coco Gauff (22) 6:2, 4:6, 6:3.

“That sounds crazy, sounds unreal,” said Sabalenka, referring to the fact that she is only the fifth player ever to win both hard court tournaments in March, the so-called “Sunshine Double”, in one year: “I’m just super grateful, super happy and super proud at the moment.”

Only Steffi Graf, Kim Clijsters, Victoria Azarenka and Iga Swiatek had achieved this before Sabalenka. The 27-year-old, who had not dropped a set until the final, also extended her lead at the top of the world rankings.

Local matador Gauff gave the Belarusian a self-sacrificing fight after a largely hopeless first set. She won the second round.

However, Sabalenka’s first set loss meant that there was only limited real excitement: Gauff did not know how to punish her opponent’s careless exploitation of break points, as she made too many mistakes herself.

Sabalenka secured 1.15 million US dollars in prize money with her second tournament win in Florida’s metropolis, which was also her 24th career title.

After her successes at the beginning of the year in Brisbane and recently in Indian Wells, it was the third tournament win for the Belarusian this year.
