Curacao in Australia against China: All the info on the FIFA Series 2026

FIFA wants to “facilitate meaningful international friendlies between national teams from different confederations”. To achieve this, the world governing body is focusing on the FIFA Series 2026. Everything you need to know about this special format.

Following the successful pilot in 2024, FIFA is now organizing the FIFA Series for the second time. The main aim is to bring together teams that usually rarely face each other. In this way, the world governing body wants to create fresh encounters and at the same time “make a concrete contribution to the global development of soccer”, as it writes itself.

When will the FIFA Series take place?

The edition will take place from March 25 to 31, with the women playing from April 9 to 18.

Who is taking part in the FIFA Series?

This year, a total of 50 national teams are taking part in this initiative, representing just under a quarter of all 211 member associations. The participants will compete in 13 groups consisting of either three or four teams. All six confederations are represented, with nine groups consisting of men’s national teams and four reserved for women.

Where will the matches take place?

There is not just one host, but twelve FIFA member associations are hosting the series this year. Rwanda will host two groups, while the men will play in Australia, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, New Zealand, Puerto Rico and Uzbekistan. The Socceroos, Cameroon, China and Germany’s World Cup group opponents Curacao will play in Australia. In Azerbaijan, it’s Sierra Leone and St. Lucia, while Bulgaria, the Solomon Islands and St. Kitts and Nevis are in Indonesia.

Kazakhstan welcome the Comoros and Namibia, while Uzbekistan host Gabon, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela and New Zealand can look forward to Chile, Finland and Cape Verde. American Samoa, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands will take on Puerto Rico, while Rwanda will host Estonia, Grenada, Kenya, Aruba, Liechtenstein, Macau and Tanzania.

The four women’s venues are Brazil, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya and Thailand. In South America, two top teams – the Selecao and Canada – will meet, with Korea and Zambia also taking part. Mauritania, Pakistan and the Turks and Caicos Islands travel to the Ivory Coast, Australia, India and Malawi to Kenya. Last but not least, Thailand welcomes Nepal, New Caledonia and the DR Congo.

What is the format?

The FIFA Series will run under one roof, but there will be different competition formats agreed by the participating member associations – ranging from knockout matches with semi-finals and finals to pre-determined fixtures. There is a standard procedure in the event of a draw after 90 minutes. Then it goes straight to a penalty shoot-out without extra time. There will also be one tournament winner in each group – to make the matches more “attractive” for fans and participants.

Farewell in the summer: Salah leaves Liverpool

Liverpool FC have announced that Mohamed Salah will leave the Reds at the end of the season. This marks the end of a very successful era at Anfield.

After nine years, an era at Liverpool FC is coming to an end: Mohamed Salah will leave the Reds in the summer after scoring 255 goals in 435 games, with his contract actually running until June 30, 2027. Both the Egyptian and Liverpool confirmed the parting of ways on Tuesday. The news is said to have been made so early in the season at the player’s request “to create transparency”.

The striker arrived at Anfield from AS Roma in 2017 and went on to become one of the best players in the club’s history over the following decade. Thanks in part to his goals, Liverpool enjoyed a particularly successful period in which they won two league titles (2019/20 and 2024/25), the Champions League (2018/19), the Club World Cup (2020) and the UEFA Super Cup (2019/20), among others. With his 255 goals in 435 games, Salah is the third most successful striker in the Reds’ glorious history after Ian Rush (339 goals in 654 games) and Roger Hunt (280 goals in 483 games). He even scored the most goals for LFC in the Premiership era and is fourth on the all-time list with 191 goals behind Wayne Rooney (208), Harry Kane (213) and Alan Shearer (260).

“Unfortunately, the day has come. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season,“ said the 33-year-old Salah in an emotional video posted via Instagram, emphasizing the special place the club and people of Liverpool have in his heart: ”First of all, I would like to say that I could never have imagined what a profound part of my life this club, this city, these people would become. Liverpool is not just a soccer club. It is passion. It is history. It’s a way of life. I can’t put it into words for anyone who isn’t part of this club.”

Emotional words from Salah

Salah then also referred to the great successes they have celebrated together (“We have won the most important trophies”) and, with regard to the tragic death of Diogo Jota in the summer of 2025, emphasized that they “fought together through the hardest time of our lives. I would like to thank everyone who was part of the club during my time here. Especially the players – past and present. And to the fans: I have no words. You supported me during the best time of my career and stayed by my side during the hardest times. That is something I will never forget and will always carry with me.”

Now, however, the time has come to say goodbye, and that is not easy. “Leaving is never easy. You have given me the best time of my life. I will always be one of you. This club will always be my home – for my family and me. Thank you for everything. I will never walk alone.”

For many years, Salah and LFC were a dream team, everything went like clockwork and almost seemed like a fairytale. But in December, there were clear cracks in the relationship. After coach Arne Slot had repeatedly dispensed with Salah, he expressed his displeasure publicly and was even dropped from the squad for the Champions League match at Inter Milan. After the “warning”, there was wild speculation about a possible departure of the Egyptian this winter, but it never came to pass. The club, coach and player apparently came together again, but not for too long, as they will now part ways.

Where Salah will move to in the summer is still unknown, although rumors of a move to Saudi Arabia have persisted recently. As the Reds emphasized, he still wants to focus on the rest of the season and finish it as successfully as possible with Liverpool.

MLS transfer perfect: Griezmann leaves Atletico again

For the second time in his career, Antoine Griezmann is closing the chapter on Atletico Madrid – this time, however, most likely for good. Unsurprisingly, the 35-year-old is moving to the MLS after the season.

The self-confessed US fan Antoine Griezmann, who has great enthusiasm for the NBA and NFL, has repeatedly flirted with a move to the United States in recent transfer windows. Most recently, there had already been speculation about an early departure this season.

Griezmann himself, however, dismissed these rumors – and formulated big goals for the rest of the season with Atletico: “I want to reach the Champions League final and win the Copa del Rey – that would be my dream.” FC Barcelona await in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, while Atletico are already two steps further in the Copa del Rey and will face San Sebastian, coached by Pellegrino Matarazzo, in the final on April 18.

However, the attacker, who retired from the French national team in 2024, has now used the international break to finalize his departure next summer. The two clubs have announced that Griezmann will leave the Rojiblancos for a second time in his career after the 2025/26 season and will instead join MLS club Orlando City SC, who have made a poor start to the new season with one win and four defeats. Griezmann has signed a contract until the summer of 2028 with an option for a further season.

“One of the most successful and influential players of his generation”

“I’m looking forward to making Orlando my new home,” said the prominent new signing, while owner Mark Wilf spoke of a “milestone for our club, our city, our fans and Major League Soccer”. “He is one of the most talented, successful and influential players of his generation.”

Because Griezmann still had a contract in the Spanish capital until 2027, a transfer fee will be paid for the 2018 world champion. Negotiations about a transfer had been going on for weeks. However, it comes as no surprise that Orlando would be the final destination. The MLS club had acquired the so-called “discovery rights” for Griezmann some time ago and therefore had priority over other league rivals.

Luis Aragones has long since overtaken Griezmann

With Griezmann, a true club icon is leaving Atletico Madrid. The Frenchman played for the Colchoneros from 2014 to 2019 and then again from 2021, interrupted only by two moderately successful years at FC Barcelona. He still has twelve appearances left until the end of the season to reach the mark of 500 competitive games for Atleti.

No one will be able to dispute his title as the club’s record goalscorer any time soon. At the end of December 2023, Griezmann had already caught up with the legendary Luis Aragones with his 173rd competitive goal. He has now scored over 200 goals for “his” club, making him unforgettable in Madrid for a long time to come.

Griezmann would love to leave a legacy in Orlando too.

“A lot of frustration, anger and worry”: Mbappé had to take a forced break

There had been much speculation about Kylian Mbappé’s state of health. The Frenchman has kept a low profile on the rumors – until now.

Kylian Mbappé had missed five games at Real Madrid, with knee problems putting the Frenchman out of action and prompting him to take a trip home to undergo further examinations. In the Whites’ two most recent games, against Manchester City (2-1) in the Champions League and in the Derbi madrileno against Atletico Madrid (3-2), he at least made it back into the substitute role.

In the meantime, rumors circulated in the Spanish and French media that the injury was much worse than Real had communicated – there was even speculation that Mbappé would miss the World Cup if he did not take an even longer break. The attacker had already had to take a break at the turn of the year due to knee problems and missed two games.

Mbappé is symptom-free

But that’s all water under the bridge. Mbappé explained on the sidelines of an insurance company event that he no longer has any complaints. “That’s behind me, I’ve stuck to a training plan to slowly get back into the game. I hope to be able to play during this international break and make a decisive contribution to success again.“

He went through the break due to his knee problems with ”a lot of frustration, anger and worry“, but a premature end to the season or even the World Cup was ”never an issue”. “At most, I had a partial tear, so I would have been out until April. There was never any discussion about the World Cup or the end of the season at Real Madrid.”

So his participation in the international trip was also out of the question. Instead, France traveled to the USA to face Brazil in Boston on Thursday and Colombia three days later in the Washington suburb of Landover. “He’s 100 percent physically fit. I have nothing against him leaving with Les Bleus,” said Real coach Alvaro Arbeloa. Meanwhile, France coach Didier Deschamps explained that the protocol had been “respected”: “I had regular discussions with Kylian. There was no obligation for him to be there, but for his part it was clear that he wanted to be with us as a player.” According to Mbappé himself, the US trip will “not be a vacation”, “we are going there to prepare for the World Cup”.

Da Silva strong, Mitchell unstoppable: Cavs survive Magic comeback

0

The Cleveland Cavaliers continue their run and win an offensively strong duel against the Orlando Magic with 136:131. While Cleveland remains in form, the Magic’s losing streak continues. The focus is on Donovan Mitchell and the German players on both sides.

Lead by an outstanding Donovan Mitchell, the Cavaliers secured their fourth win in a row. The All-Star exploded for 42 points and once again confirmed his strong record against Orlando, against whom he now averages 27.2 points in 23 regular-season games. He was supported by James Harden, who scored a total of 26 points after a strong first half, while Evan Mobley produced a flawless performance from the field with 19 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

The Magic held their own for long stretches, thanks in particular to Paolo Banchero. The forward put up 36 points and got off to a furious start with 16 points in the first quarter as Orlando took an early 39:32 lead. Tristan da Silva also impressed with 18 points, while Desmond Bane and Jamal Cain added 17 points each. After seven wins in a row, the Magic have now lost six games in a row.

Cavs hold off Magic comeback

In the final period, Cleveland initially seemed to be in control of the game and extended its lead to eleven points (114:103). However, Orlando fought its way back and reduced the deficit to a few points in crunch time. After free throws by Wendell Carter Jr., things got tight again late on before Mitchell clinched the game with a floater with 13.7 seconds remaining.

From Germany’s perspective, several players were also in the spotlight: Alongside da Silva, Moritz Wagner got five minutes after not playing in several games and scored four points. For the Cavaliers, Dennis Schröder contributed six points and two assists in 16 minutes.

Martin back to his old strength at Aprilia: What does this mean for his future?

Is Jorge Martin a title contender again, and was the planned switch to Yamaha perhaps premature? After his podium success with Aprilia, he speaks plainly

Is Jorge Martin possibly already considering his decision (not yet officially confirmed) to switch to Yamaha from 2027? After his strong performance at the Brazilian Grand Prix, this question no longer seems entirely far-fetched.

The 2024 World Champion’s performance on the track with Aprilia was more than just a respectable success. After a long injury break, Martin made an impressive comeback: third place in the sprint, second place in the Grand Prix – his first podium for Aprilia and the first in around one and a half years.

The relief was correspondingly great. “I’m really, really happy. Before the weekend, I didn’t expect to be here,” he says. Together with Aprilia, he “did an incredible job” and was able to improve significantly over the course of the Grand Prix weekend from Saturday to Sunday.

Martin not yet back at 100 percent

The race did not even go perfectly. He lost time on the first few laps because he got stuck in the pack. But more than second place was not possible anyway, the Spaniard admits. His team-mate Marco Bezzecchi, who won by over three seconds, is currently “at an incredible level”.

Despite this, the joy prevailed: finally a podium again, finally back at the front. But does this result mean that Martin is back to full strength – both physically and as a rider? Not quite. He himself explains: after Thailand he was “much better”, back then he thought he was at around 85 percent, now it’s more like 95 percent.

“I still have a bit of a problem with my hand and shoulder,” he admits, but above all he still lacks the perfect feel for the Aprilia. Sometimes he still rides too tense, which slows him down. Nevertheless: “It’s getting better with every lap.” In one to one and a half months at the latest, he wants to be back at the top level.

Martin’s fight back was that difficult

After the sprint, Martin had already indicated that the road back was not yet complete. Although he wanted to put the difficult previous season behind him, he had learned important lessons from it. At the same time, he emphasized that there was still work ahead of him, both physically and in terms of coordination with the bike. “I’m really happy about the podium, but we have to keep working hard,” he clarifies.

Martin himself classifies his comeback as particularly challenging. Comparisons with his return in Portimao in 2021 are difficult: he was younger then and hungrier for victories. Today, as world champion, the approach is different.

In addition, he has a veritable injury odyssey behind him: “27 broken bones, five operations … That was much harder than back then.” Nevertheless, he has once again fought his way back and now wants to build up his self-confidence step by step.

Yamaha deal signed prematurely?

Despite the strong weekend, Martin is tempering his expectations in the title fight. At the moment, he still lacks consistency over the race distance, and he simply has too little experience with the Aprilia. Other riders are “one with the bike”, while he still needs to understand what the bike needs and how he can adapt. But with growing speed and self-confidence, he is getting closer to the top riders every day.

And what about his future? Do results like this change his plans? According to insiders, he has already signed with Yamaha for 2027. “No, that doesn’t change anything,” says Martin. “The future is the future. Now is the present. I want to concentrate on the present.”

Of course he is worried, but as soon as he has made a decision, he will back it 100 percent. “But now we are at Aprilia, now we are in a good phase, and it is time to enjoy the moment.”

Rivola believes: This is just the beginning

The fact that this moment is possible at all is also down to the good work of the team – and Martin’s exceptional talent, as Aprilia’s Head of Racing Massimo Rivola emphasizes. For him, the success came as less of a surprise, as Martin is a naturally super-fast rider and double world champion, according to Rivola.

Nevertheless, it was an emotional weekend, with two podium finishes “in such good style”. The Aprilia boss is convinced: “What he showed in Thailand was impressive. What he showed here was impressive. And what he will show in the next races will also be impressive.”

Without a crash in qualifying, even more might have been possible, speculates Rivola. But regardless of this, it is clear that “Jorge is on the rise”. And that could be one of the most exciting developments of the season.

Max Verstappen in Formula 1 on the Nordschleife?

Why Formula 1 remains banned on the Nordschleife despite Max Verstappen’s GT3 success

Max Verstappen is currently experiencing the Nordschleife very intensively. He wins his first NLS race in GT3, but is subsequently disqualified. Nevertheless, the Nürburgring remains one of the next big goals for the three-time Formula 1 world champion, especially with a view to the 24-hour race.

Verstappen clearly explains why the 24-hour race appeals to him so much. “Because it’s one of the best races in the world. It’s one of the best tracks.” In a GT car, that is exactly the right pace for him. “In a GT car, that’s the perfect speed for me there. If you drive a bit faster, it can be a bit dangerous in some places.”

The Dutchman emphasizes how long he has been following the Green Hell. “I’ve been watching it for a long time, of course.” Many of his friends have already raced there. “They say it’s one of the best things ever.” His anticipation for the 24-hour debut and the duel with a “very strong starting field overall” is correspondingly high.

Red Bull said no to F1 on the Nordschleife – Vettel was allowed

It is worth noting that Verstappen was not allowed to do a demo lap in a Formula 1 car there. When asked whether he could imagine doing an F1 show lap, he replied: “That wasn’t allowed, otherwise I would have done it already.” When asked, he confirms curtly: “Yes.” The refusal contrasts with the history of other stars on the Nordschleife.

Sebastian Vettel drove demo laps in the Red Bull RB7 on the Nordschleife in 2023. David Coulthard was also there in a show car. Even Ralf Schumacher, who is rather skeptical about the Nordschleife, completed F1 laps in the BMW-Williams. Nick Heidfeld chased the Sauber-BMW around the Eifel years earlier.

In 2023, Red Bull expanded the event into a major show, which is one of the absolute highlights of the 24-hour race’s supporting program. The fans would certainly welcome a new edition.

For Verstappen, driving fun is not just a question of pure speed. “Not really, because then the fun here would still be very high, it’s the highest speed.” The environment appeals to him. “It’s just a different way of working with people. It’s also a slightly different environment in the paddock, I would say.”

Long distance more racing, less show

He describes the endurance racing world as “probably a bit more old-school, less political, which I probably like a bit more”. He can move more freely there. “I can probably be myself a bit more there.” Added to this is his general desire for big endurance races, also influenced by his father Jos Verstappen.

Verstappen makes it clear that the Nordschleife project was planned independently of his current F1 mood. “Of course, it was already planned, regardless of what I’m driving this year.” Nevertheless, he says openly: “I wish I was having a bit more fun here [Formula 1] at the moment.” At the same time, he praises his team for making these GT programs possible for him.

The Dutchman deliberately does not want to reduce himself to Formula 1. “I don’t just have to be a Formula 1 driver. I can also do other things.” He points to his track record. “I’ve been doing this for quite a while and I’ve achieved everything I wanted to achieve.” For him, now is the right time to try something new.

Verstappen wants to drive the big races

Verstappen is thinking about the entire range of big endurance races. “I want to drive these races, all the big endurance races.” He doesn’t want to wait. “I don’t want to do this when I’m 40 years old, so now is the perfect age for it.” The Nordschleife is the first real test of endurance in a real cockpit.

The race calendar could also expand his Nordschleife plans. When asked about possible gaps, Verstappen says: “If something happens with the calendar, I’ll see what’s possible.” Additional NLS stints, night driving, traffic and Code 60 phases are all more of an attraction than a risk for him right now.

This creates a contrast that suits his situation well. In Formula 1, Max Verstappen complains about a declining fun factor; on the Nordschleife, he finds an environment that he experiences as less political and more direct. However, the fact that he is not allowed to take to the track in an F1 Red Bull is a great pity, especially for the fans.

Haas races at the Japanese Grand Prix with a special Godzilla design

The Haas team has unveiled a special Godzilla design ahead of the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix: What it’s all about and why to expect more this season

A few days before the Japanese Grand Prix (full schedule here), the Haas team has unveiled a special design for the VF-26: Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman will line up at the Formula 1 race in Suzuka (the full 2026 race calendar) with an eye-catching Godzilla livery.

The special design for the Japanese Grand Prix, which was unveiled in Tokyo on Tuesday, has a reason: a few weeks ago, Haas announced a new partnership with Toho, the Japanese entertainment company behind the famous Godzilla monster.

“This is an extraordinary opportunity to introduce our brand to a new audience. It’s a first for Haas and Toho,” says Team Principal Ayao Komatsu. “We are honored to bring a global icon like Godzilla to this sport and to launch new initiatives in such an important year for the brand.”

Godzilla is a fictional giant lizard from Japanese films that first appeared in 1954. He is often depicted as a mutated dinosaur created by nuclear testing and is both a destroyer and occasional protector of mankind. In the original Japanese version, the monster is called Gojira, a combination of gorira (gorilla) and kujira (whale).

Godzilla is now a worldwide pop culture phenomenon that appears in films, series and comics. “Godzilla represents indomitable strength and resilience – a spirit that perfectly reflects the Haas team’s determination to overcome obstacles time and time again,” adds Keiji Ota from Godzilla creator Toho.

The partnership between Haas and Toho will extend far beyond this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix, however. A further special livery has already been announced for the US Grand Prix in October, which fittingly coincides with the US cinema release of “Godzilla Minus Zero”.

Mercedes mood: Coulthard warns against “posturing” with Russell and Antonelli

George Russell congratulates Antonelli on his first victory – but former driver David Coulthard warns against a false front and expects a heated Mercedes battle

The team-internal duel at Mercedes is picking up speed: David Coulthard has analyzed the dynamic that is brewing at the Silver Arrows following Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s debut victory at the Chinese Grand Prix. After just two race weekends of the 2026 season, the balance is even: George Russell triumphed in the season opener in Australia and in the sprint in China, while Antonelli secured victory in the main race in Shanghai.

Although Russell officially congratulated his young team-mate, Coulthard is convinced that things are bubbling behind the scenes. “Behind this façade,” says the Scot, Russell will “try to get every possible advantage over him for Suzuka”.

Coulthard: “He’s not your buddy”

When asked on the Up To Speed podcast how long team-mates can actually remain friends, Coulthard was clear: “Well, look, it’s done. It’s over now, because George knows he’s got a real threat to this world championship in the house.”

The 2001 runner-up draws parallels with the competition: “We saw it last year with Lando [Norris] and Oscar [Piastri]. McLaren reached the point where they gave them a car with which they could fight for the world title. Amazingly, they almost lost it to Max [Verstappen] by a couple of points.“

Coulthard says Mercedes must seize the moment, as periods of dominance can be fleeting in the new era of Formula 1: ”This could be the only time Mercedes give them that kind of advantage. So don’t be under any illusions: George is trying everything behind this ‘Well done, Kimi’ posturing to gain the upper hand for Suzuka and the upcoming races.”

One man’s success is another man’s failure

The 13-time Grand Prix winner has little use for the romance of “team play”: “And Kimi’s side should do exactly the same. The term ‘teammate’ is a fallacy. He’s not your buddy. If you get on well off the track, that’s great. But his success is your failure – and vice versa.”

Alcaraz wants to switch off after setback

0

The Spanish top star is clearly ready for a break. He has currently lost some of his top form.

Carlos Alcaraz only had one goal. “I’ll probably go home, I’m looking forward to it,” said the Spanish top star after his surprising and early exit from the Masters in Miami: “A few days chilling out with my family and friends. I don’t know how much rest my team will give me.”

Alcaraz was anything but at his best at the prestigious Masters event. The world number one missed out on the round of 16 with a 3:6, 7:5, 4:6 third-round defeat against the American Sebastian Korda and thus suffered his second setback in nine days. In Indian Wells, the seven-time Grand Slam winner was defeated in the semi-finals by Russia’s Daniil Medvedev. In doing so, he suffered his first defeat of the season after 16 previous victories.

Now the high-flyer, who has shared the last nine Grand Slam victories with Italian Jannik Sinner, obviously needs a break. This opens up opportunities for professionals like the German number one Alexander Zverev.

“The clay court season is just around the corner. I have some really good tournaments ahead of me that I’m really looking forward to,” said Alcaraz. He wants to recharge his batteries and then attack again. In the run-up to the highlight French Open (from May 24), the clay court season really kicks off at the beginning of April with the Masters in Monte-Carlo.

Alcaraz is the defending champion in Monaco as well as at Roland Garros. The exceptional player will be aiming to win his second major triumph this year in Paris after the Australian Open. He will work hard to achieve this after the short break and wants to be more dominant again, especially in the close moments. He will try to “push his opponents to their limits even more”, he announced confidently.
