For the past three years, the BBL table has been sorted according to percentage win rate, but now the league is returning to the old format. This decision was influenced by the media and fans.
The BBL clubs have decided that the table will be sorted by points again in the new season. This means that each win will be worth two points and each loss will be worth two negative points. In the past three seasons, the table was sorted according to which team had won the highest percentage of its games to date.
One positive effect of this was that the often uneven number of games due to the many European Cup participants in the BBL had previously caused the table to slip, at least temporarily. The percentage sorting eliminated this problem.
Nevertheless, this form of ranking did not catch on: “In these three years, the new table has not established itself, especially in media coverage. In addition, there was repeated feedback from the fan community to return to the table that is familiar from our history,” explains Robert Wintermantel, Head of Sports and Finance for the league, on the website.
Wintermantel: Classic table “more familiar and easier to understand”
“After internal evaluation and discussions with the clubs, we have therefore come to the conclusion that the classic table is more familiar and easier to understand,” says the former professional player and former manager of Tigers Tübingen.
The table will therefore once again be decided by the number of positive points (the team with the most wins is at the top, the team with the fewest wins is at the bottom). If competitors have the same number of wins, the club with fewer negative points will be ranked higher.
If two or more teams have the same number of positive and negative points, the following criteria will apply in the usual order: direct comparison of the head-to-head matches, basket ratio from the head-to-head matches, overall basket ratio from all season games, the better quotient from the overall basket ratio. If the quotient is also the same, the final decision will be made by drawing lots.
