Kevin Behrens has found a new club in Switzerland. As FC Lugano announced on Tuesday, the 34-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the Swiss club until 2027.
Lugano is looking forward to Kevin Behrens, who, according to sporting director Sebastian Pelzer, is “a very experienced striker, physically strong, committed, and clinical in front of goal.” “He has proven throughout his career that he can be decisive in competitive situations. We are convinced that he will enrich our offense with his quality and personality.”
Behrens, who joined VfL from Union Berlin in January 2024 for €1.3 million, played in 18 games for Wolfsburg across all competitions last season, but always came on as a substitute and scored only one goal. The former national team striker also made negative headlines off the pitch with homophobic comments.
VfL did not push for a winter departure, but did not extend his expiring contract in the summer either. After 106 Bundesliga games and a total of 16 goals for Union Berlin (2021 to 2024) and VfL Wolfsburg (2024/25), the striker is now venturing abroad.
Behrens confirms readiness
In Ticino, they are expecting a player with “solid experience at the highest level in Germany,” Lugano wrote in a club statement, emphasizing: “The club is delighted to welcome a player who, thanks to his outstanding professional career, is an important addition both in terms of character and technique.”
However, Lugano also explicitly addressed Behrens’ “controversial incident.” In this context, it was pointed out that this had been “clarified internally” at VfL and that the player had assured FCL of his “willingness to fully represent the shared values of our club, which are based on inclusion and respect.”
