Alcaraz criticizes referee and celebrates another title

Carlos Alcaraz has been in top form for months. The Spaniard underscores his confidence with another tournament victory. However, he is not at all satisfied with the referee.

Despite his brief annoyance with the referee, US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz continued his impressive run with a title win in Tokyo. The world number one won the final in the Japanese capital 6-4, 6-4 against American Taylor Fritz to celebrate his eighth tournament victory this year. It was his ninth consecutive final.

Alcaraz gets upset with the umpire

The fact that he temporarily lost his temper with the umpire did not deter the Spaniard. “You’ve never played tennis in your life,” the 22-year-old complained to the referee in the first set. Fergus Murphy had given him a warning in accordance with the rules when Alcaraz exceeded the permitted 25 seconds before his serve. After a strenuous rally, he had needed to catch his breath—and was unhappy with how quickly the referee started the clock.

Fritz, ranked fifth in the world, who finished the match with his left thigh bandaged, had beaten Alcaraz at the Laver Cup in San Francisco. In Tokyo, Alcaraz was too strong and even conjured up one of his feared drop shots on match point. He secured his 24th tournament victory overall. In his opening match, the six-time Grand Slam tournament winner had to overcome a scary moment when he twisted his ankle and had to receive treatment.
