Alcaraz advances after emergency

The Spaniard also breezes through the round of 16 at the Australian Open. His match against Tommy Paul has to be interrupted in the first set.

Carlos Alcaraz has also cleared the fourth hurdle at the Australian Open without losing a set. Against American Tommy Paul, the Spaniard showed stronger nerves in the decisive phases of the match and won 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, 7-5.

He did not let a 15-minute interruption due to a medical incident in the stands distract him on his way to the quarterfinals.

Alcaraz wants to win the Australian Open for the first time

“I played a good match, it was a high level on both sides,” said Alcaraz after an impressive performance. In the quarterfinals, where he was surprisingly defeated by Novak Djokovic last year, Alcaraz will now face Australian crowd favorite Alex de Minaur or Kazakh Alexander Bublik.

Alcaraz has never made it past the quarterfinals in Australia. This year, he wants to become the youngest player in history to complete the career Grand Slam in Melbourne.

In the tiebreak of the first set, the match had to be interrupted by chair umpire Marija Cicak. There had been a medical emergency in the stands. Afterwards, an elderly lady was seen being led away from her seat, weakened but in stable condition. Alcaraz coped with the break a little better, while Paul gave away the tiebreak with a double fault.
