After Zandvoort: Mark Webber makes an exception and gives a TV interview after all

After his triumph in Zandvoort, Oscar Piastri now has nine Formula 1 victories to his name, just like his manager Mark Webber: Development not yet complete

Oscar Piastri reached another milestone at the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix. With his ninth Formula 1 victory, he drew level with his former teammate and mentor Mark Webber—a moment that has special significance for both the young Australian and Webber himself.

For the first time in years, Webber agreed to a detailed TV interview on camera and spoke openly about his protégé’s career. But first, Piastri emphasized Webber’s importance in his media round: “He has been very helpful throughout my career, especially in the last five years.”

“Once I got into Formula 1, his support became even more important. He thinks of things I wouldn’t have thought of myself, helps me with expectations, and prepares me for the rigors of the sport.“

The 24-year-old emphasizes that even after nine race wins and initial successes, he has not yet reached the end of his development: ”I’m still learning. I’m not perfect yet and I’m constantly thinking about things I didn’t consider last year or before. It’s important to have him by my side.”

Webber: A great day for Australian motorsport

Webber himself is also proud: “Oscar drove fantastically today. This is a great day for Australian motorsport. Daniel Ricciardo, Jack Doohan, AJ—and now Oscar—we can see that our drivers can also be successful early on. He has worked incredibly hard and made excellent use of his opportunities.”

Webber admits that Piastri has now caught up with him in terms of number of wins: “He’s now level with me. We’ve joked a lot over the last few years, but today he’s overtaken me. I couldn’t be happier. He’s constantly improving.”

When asked whether Piastri can still be stopped in this form, Webber remains realistic: “There’s still a long way to go. We still have races like Brazil, where it can rain, or Singapore and Azerbaijan, where street races always hold surprises. But today was a great day for him, he deserved the win.”
