After interim period: ManUnited signs Vivell long-term

Last summer, Christopher Vivell (38) joined Manchester United on an interim basis. Now it is clear: the German will remain with the Red Devils as “Director of Recruitment”.

Manchester United and shareholder Jim Ratcliffe are currently trying to drastically reduce the club’s spending. As part of this austerity drive, the Red Devils have now made an important personnel decision off the field and provided Christopher Vivell with a long-term contract, as The Athletic reports.

Following the departure of sporting director Dan Ashworth, who left the club after just five months in the role, Vivell provides the current 15th-placed team in the Premier League with expertise in scouting and signing players. The 38-year-old previously served as technical director at both RB Leipzig and Chelsea.

Search for emerging talent

In Manchester, Vivell was hired last summer as “Director of Global Talent” – initially on an interim basis. His responsibilities included identifying the best available talent for the professional squad as well as emerging youth players who fit the club’s strategy.

Around half a year later, the German is now not only contractually bound to the Red Devils for a longer period of time, but is also taking on a role that has changed at least in part. “Director of Recruitment” is Vivell’s new job title, and United’s technical director Jason Wilcox is now his immediate superior.

In particular, the Karlsruhe-born Vivell is expected to take on great responsibility for the discovery of young and promising talent in the coming years. Vivell, who had already worked as a scout for TSG Hoffenheim before his spells in Salzburg, Leipzig and Chelsea, certainly has no lack of experience.
