Flick hits back at criticism of Rodri: “We manage every minute he plays”

FC Barcelona will have to do without Rodri in the top-of-the-table clash at Atlético Madrid – because he was used incorrectly? Hansi Flick cannot understand this criticism.

Atlético Madrid is not exactly Hansi Flick’s favourite opponent. In December 2024, the then-suspended manager watched from the stands as the Colchoneros won in Barcelona for the first time since 2006 (2–1). There’s no need to even mention last season: the Catalans were knocked out by Simeone’s side in both the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.

For the next clash on Sunday in Madrid, Flick will now also have to do without Rodri. The 30-year-old sustained a muscle injury to his right thigh during the 3–0 Champions League win against Aston Villa. In Spain, there has been criticism that Flick gave the World Cup winner too much playing time against weaker opponents. Rodri, on the other hand, had initially been on the bench for the 2–4 defeat at PSG and will now also miss the match against Atlético.

So, was there a mismanagement of his playing time? The Barcelona manager does not see it that way. “You can always do things a bit better, but in this case we communicated openly with the player. We manage every minute he spends on the pitch. We’re talking about an experienced footballer here, and we talk to him,” said Flick, who also added: “If you look at the results, you might think we could have done something better. But that’s in the past now.”

The question remains as to who will replace Rodri. Marc Bernal and Frenkie de Jong are in contention. Flick did not want to commit to who would be given the nod. “The decision is still pending; we know the qualities of both players. Frenkie may have more experience, but on the ball they’re both equally strong.”

Eric is a candidate for the starting line-up

In defence, however, the injury list is clearing up ahead of the top-of-the-table clash. Whilst Jules Koundé won’t be fit in time, both Eric and Andreas Christensen will be back in the squad. “Eric could be in the starting line-up, but we’ll see,” said Flick, who also dashed Brian Farina’s hopes of another start.

The 20-year-old midfielder had been converted to a right-back due to a shortage of players and performed well. Flick praised the newcomer’s link-up play with Lamine Yamal. Furthermore, Farinas had shown against Aston Villa “that he can also deliver in important matches”.
