Lewis Hamilton: I never wanted to become as bitter as the other veteran drivers

Lewis Hamilton follows the progress of the very young Formula 1 drivers with great enthusiasm – though he has little sympathy for the behaviour of some of his colleagues

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has secured his first Formula 1 world title at the age of just 20. For Lewis Hamilton, who is more than twice that age, this is by no means a reason to start questioning his own career – quite the opposite.

The record-holding world champion is proud of the next generation, whilst at the same time criticising the lack of understanding shown by some of his colleagues. “I see a lot of former Formula 1 drivers, older drivers and racing drivers who are constantly speaking ill of young people,” says Hamilton.

“Even though they’ve been through something similar themselves, they lack any sense of empathy. I’ve always wanted to make sure I don’t become that sort of driver.” Instead, he says, it is important to him to recognise young drivers for their achievements and to show them the respect they deserve.

Formula 1 is “the most difficult platform on which to succeed”

The 41-year-old follows the development of young drivers with great enthusiasm – and not just at the front of the field. “It’s great to see all these young drivers, even further down the field and at the other teams. They face the challenges and the pressure week in, week out,” says the seven-time world champion.

Whilst Formula 1 drivers are generally in a privileged position, one must not underestimate the challenges of the sport. It is anything but a given to pick oneself up after setbacks, keep one’s chin up and carry on.

That is precisely what impresses Hamilton about the younger generation. “They do it with genuine humility and grace,” he praises. “Of course, they make mistakes along the way. But this is the pinnacle of motorsport. It’s the most difficult platform on which to succeed.”

Hamilton shows understanding for the young drivers’ mistakes

Precisely because mistakes can happen so quickly in Formula 1, Hamilton is sympathetic to the situation facing the up-and-coming drivers. Under such enormous pressure, it’s easy to make that crucial mistake and, as a result, potentially miss out on a big opportunity.

He respects it all the more when young drivers carry on after setbacks and prove themselves time and time again. “I can understand what it’s like for each and every one of them to get back on their feet time and again, carry on and give it their all. I have great respect for that,” emphasises Hamilton.

However, for him, the development of the younger generation is not a reason to reflect on his own career. Rather, the Briton takes a clear stance: anyone who once started out as a young driver in Formula 1 should treat today’s talents with greater understanding – rather than using their mistakes as a reason for criticism.
