A personnel decision by Charlotte Hornets head coach Charles Lee is causing a stir. In Detroit, he left Naz Reid out entirely after the break – the game against the Pistons was lost despite the team leading at half-time. Here’s what the coach had to say about it afterwards.

The Hornets lost 89–97 away to the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday, despite leading 51–44 at half-time. Reid, who was in the starting line-up, did not return to the court after the break. Lee revealed afterwards that this was not due to an injury.

“Unfortunately, Naz didn’t meet our standards in the first half, and at half-time we decided he wouldn’t play in the second half,” Lee explained after the match. Up to that point, Reid had racked up seven points and six rebounds in just under 13 minutes, but had only made two of his six shots. “I’m looking forward to him meeting those standards in the next game,” added the coach.

Pistons turn the game around after Reid is substituted

The game turned on its head after the break. Detroit dominated the third quarter 32–19 and did not relinquish the lead thereafter. In total, the Hornets committed 25 turnovers. The home side’s top scorer was Cade Cunningham with 30 points, whilst for Charlotte, Brandon Miller scored 31 points and grabbed twelve rebounds.

Schröder scored 14 points and provided five assists, making six of ten shots, whilst his national team colleague Christian Anderson Jr. scored two points in eight minutes. Hannes Steinbach spent the entire match on the bench. Charlotte are still without their two key players, Coby White and Kon Knueppel. With a record of three wins and two defeats, they face the Washington Wizards on Friday.

Reid moved to Charlotte from the Minnesota Timberwolves in the summer in a swap for LaMelo Ball. The 2024 Sixth Man of the Year is in the second year of a five-year contract worth US$125 million.
