Toto Wolff speaks to Sky about his son Jack’s spectacular karting crash and confirms that the young racing driver is unharmed
At the United States Grand Prix, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is not being asked about his team’s performance. After all, his son Jack made the headlines with a spectacular crash ahead of the race in Austin.
‘Everything’s fine, everything’s fine,’ said his father, giving the all-clear in an interview with Peter Hardenacke on Sky Sport F1. ‘It was all about the win and things got a bit heated, but at the end of the day he’s unharmed and that’s the most important thing.’
Jack Wolff competes in karting and has already secured the title in the Italian IAME Series this season. Specifically, the 9-year-old has triumphed in the X30 U10 category. Due to his father’s high-profile role, the young racing driver’s career is already being closely watched.
The so-called IAME Warrior Final took place in Viterbo from 20 to 24 October. In a qualifying race, Wolff had been battling it out with Nahyl El Gahoudi when the wheels of the two karts became entangled.
Dimitar Uzunov, who was driving directly behind the two youngsters, was unable to avoid the chaos and his kart flew straight over the son of the Mercedes team principal. Despite the sensational scene, he was only struck on the shoulder and was able to get back into his kart on Saturday. Jack Wolff finished 15th in the final standings.
When it comes to their son’s ambitions, Toto and Susie Wolff are leaving nothing to chance. Mercedes driver George Russell has already lent a helping hand to Jack, who is competing for Austria.
However, the Wolff family are not yet keen to get carried away dreaming of a truly great career. Following Jack’s first karting title, ORF expert Alexander Wurz promptly asked his father, Toto, when we might expect to see the youngster in Formula 1. “Not for a long time yet, and we’re not talking about that either,” replied the team boss. “Then there are still the Juniors and Seniors [im Kart]. So we’re keeping our feet on the ground.”
Both parents have a wealth of experience in motorsport. Whilst his father Toto used to compete regularly in touring car racing – not least on the legendary Nordschleife – his mother Susie completed seven seasons in the DTM.
