The Kempen native kept his nerve in his clash with a local favourite.

German professional tennis player Daniel Altmaier has fought his way into the second round of the ATP tournament in Lyon. The Kempen native won his opening match in France 5–7, 7–6 (7–4), 7–6 (7–3) against local favourite Titouan Droguet. Altmaier, the only German in the main draw, will now face Croatian Borna Gojo.

At the recent ATP Masters in Shanghai, Altmaier celebrated his first victory since late August by reaching the second round, before being knocked out by US Open finalist Ben Shelton. In his first ever meeting with Droguet, with his back against the wall, he kept his nerve and forced a deciding set, in which he converted his second match point to secure victory after 2 hours and 52 minutes.
