Eva Lys, once a rising star, is now ranked only 136th – and the trend is clearly downwards.

Following her withdrawal from the tournament in Beijing, Hamburg-born Eva Lys has slipped 34 places down the world tennis rankings to 136th. The former world number 39 is now only the fourth-best German player on the WTA Tour. Ahead of Lys are Noma Noha Akugue (126th), Tatjana Maria (71st) and Tamara Korpatsch (50th). The men’s rankings will not be updated until next week, following the Masters in Shanghai.

Lys had reached the quarter-finals at last year’s 1000-level tournament in Beijing, but has now lost those ranking points. The 24-year-old retired from her match against 16-year-old Chinese player Sun Xinran whilst trailing 1–6, 0–3. She had previously appeared to be severely unsettled. For Lys, this marked the continuation of a difficult season marked by several health setbacks.

Rybakina remains at the top

As the climber of the week, Zheng Qinwen rose 31 places and is now ranked 23rd. The Paris Olympic champion became the first Chinese woman ever to win the title in Beijing and has finally returned to the world’s elite after a long period of suffering due to an elbow injury. Zheng has withdrawn from this week’s tournament in Wuhan due to the physical strain.

US Open winner Jelena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) remains at the top of the women’s rankings, ahead of Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus). Despite her defeat in the Beijing final, the 19-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva is now third. She, too, withdrew from the Wuhan tournament at short notice.
