You can always count on Giovanna Scoccimarro. The 28-year-old secured the German team’s first medal in Baku.

Judoka Giovanna Scoccimarro has won the German team’s first medal at the World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. The 28-year-old from Lower Saxony won the third-place play-off in the under-70-kilogramme category against Brazil’s Nauana Silva to secure bronze. Following her World Championship silver in Doha in 2023, this is the greatest success of her career.

Scoccimarro had fought her way into the semi-finals with three victories, only to lose there to the Austrian Michaela Polleres. In the third-place play-off, however, she seized her opportunity. In Baku, twin sisters Mascha and Seija Ballhaus had both narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fifth in their respective weight classes.

Trippel and Butkereit miss out on medals

Eduard Trippel (up to 90 kg) and Miriam Butkereit failed to reach the medal bouts on Thursday. Trippel lost his second bout to Uzbek Nurbek Murtozoev by ippon. Butkereit, who had won silver at the 2024 Paris Olympics, narrowly missed out on the pool final following a defeat to Serbian Aleksandra Andric.
