Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang caused quite a stir at the start of the new La Liga season, scoring goals in quick succession. Now, however, the striker has been forced to take a break – and for the long term, at that.
The project appealed to him – so, following his second departure from Olympique Marseille, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang eventually signed for La Liga newcomers and returnees Deportivo A Coruna.
Best of all: The striker, now 37, made an immediate impression and has contributed an impressive five goals and two assists in his seven appearances so far for the Galicians. In doing so, “Auba” helped his new – and, for the time being, defeated – team to temporarily settle into 7th place.

However, as the international break gets underway – which will run for the next two and a half weeks – A Coruna has now announced some bad news. Goal-scoring machine Aubameyang has picked up an injury – and a serious one at that. Having suffered a meniscus injury in his right knee, the former Dortmund player will even have to undergo surgery. He’ll be out for two months.
This is certainly a bitter pill to swallow, not only for the club but also for Aubameyang himself, who – following his ‘fire extinguisher’ headline and his high-profile resignation from the Gabonese national team earlier this year – had recently been back in the spotlight with strong sporting performances.
Meanwhile, the change in Deportivo A Coruna’s attack could scarcely be more drastic. Due to the absence of the veteran, who despite his advanced age still boasts impressive pace and finishing ability, manager Antonio Hidalgo will rely on Bil Nsongo – who is 16 years (!) his junior – as he did most recently in the 1–1 draw against Real Betis Sevilla. However, the 22-year-old talent has yet to be directly involved in a goal in any of his seven La Liga matches in the 2026/27 season.
As well as the loss of Aubameyang, manager Hidalgo must also do without midfielder Marc Casado, who was only loaned from FC Barcelona on deadline day. The 23-year-old must also undergo surgery – in his case, for a broken right collarbone sustained early in the match against Real Betis. Casado’s treatment is taking place in Barcelona under the supervision of his actual employer.
