Alexander Zverev has won the US Open – and Sophia Thomalla reacted straight away. The German tennis star’s long-term girlfriend celebrated his triumph over Ben Shelton with a message on her Instagram Story.
Top seed Zverev prevailed in the final 6–3, 7–6 (7–2), 5–7, 6–2. After two dominant sets, Zverev did lose the third set to Shelton, but responded with a controlled fourth set and converted his match point to secure his second Grand Slam triumph.
Thomalla was not at Arthur Ashe Stadium for the final, but she did not let the victory go uncommented. She shared a picture featuring Zverev’s trophies from the US Open and Roland Garros, writing: “He did it again.” She added a heart to the post.
Zverev crowns his Grand Slam year
With his victory in New York, Alexander Zverev cemented his breakthrough on the biggest stage. He had won his first major title at the French Open following a five-set final against Flavio Cobolli.
Prior to that, the German had lost three Grand Slam finals. He now has two major titles to his name in a single season.
