Álvaro Morata has already played for quite a few clubs—and now he’s adding Leganés to the list. As the Spanish second-division club confirmed, the European champion is returning to Madrid.
Real Madrid, Juventus Turin, Chelsea, Atlético Madrid, AC Milan, Galatasaray, and most recently Como: Álvaro Morata has played for quite a few big clubs, but the striker has never stayed at any one for very long. Only at the start of his career with Real did he last four years; otherwise, he’s stayed with a club for a maximum of two seasons. Most recently, he was under contract with Como and helped the northern Italian club qualify for the Champions League.
The problem: He failed to score in 26 appearances under his compatriot and coach Cesc Fàbregas. That’s one reason why Como is on the hunt for another striker—and has found one in Moise Kean. His transfer is still far from finalized, but Morata is already packing his bags and leaving Serie A. As was announced on Friday, he is moving on loan to the Spanish second division club CD Leganés, located in a Madrid suburb, until the end of the season. For the 33-year-old, this also marks a return to his hometown; Leganés is located only about eleven kilometers from Madrid.
Great Euphoria at CD Leganés
The euphoria at Leganés is immense, as the club has pulled off a real transfer coup. After all, Morata has 87 caps as a striker for the Spanish national team (37 goals) and won both the 2023 Nations League and the 2024 European Championship with Spain. His list of titles at the club level is also quite impressive. He won league titles with Real Madrid, Juventus, and Galatasaray, and celebrated cup victories with Real Madrid, Juventus, Chelsea, and Galatasaray. He also won the Champions League with Real Madrid—twice—and the Club World Cup is also on his resume. “With more than 600 games and over 200 goals as a professional, one of the best Spanish strikers of the past decades is coming to Ontime Butarque,” Leganés writes in its club announcement.
Leganés has started the new season with four points from two games and is likely setting its sights on promotion to La Liga. Morata, for whom this marks his eighth different club and eleventh club transfer overall in his career, can help achieve this goal with his goals.
