RB Leipzig has set a new transfer record: Yan Diomande is moving to Real Madrid for a fixed fee of 125 million euros, which could increase by an additional 15 million euros. This has now been made official.
Yan Diomande had already turned heads at the end of June with a statement he made ahead of the World Cup round of 32. “I naturally assume that I will be leaving the club,” Leipzig’s winger explained ahead of the match against Norway, which they later lost. One month later, his departure is indeed official: For a base transfer fee of 125 million euros, Diomande is leaving the Bundesliga and will play for Real Madrid in the future.
According to Sky, the total could easily rise to 135 million through easily attainable bonuses. The full package would apparently amount to a staggering 140 million euros. Real Madrid has signed Diomande to a seven-year contract running through June 30, 2033.
“From day one, Yan impressed us with his carefree attitude, willingness to learn, and great courage,” said Marcel Schäfer, Leipzig’s sporting director, in a farewell statement: “He established himself at the highest level with us in no time at all thanks to his speed, dribbling ability, and goal-scoring threat. We’re proud that Yan has attracted significant international attention through his strong performances at RB Leipzig. This shows the kind of development young, hungry, and promising players can achieve with us.”
Diomande had only joined RB in the summer of 2025 for a then-staggering 20 million euros from Spanish second-division club Leganés, which is reportedly set to receive a five percent share of the record transfer fee to Real Madrid. In Leipzig, however, he immediately proved what Schäfer and his staff had seen in him. The Ivorian had no trouble finding his footing and racked up an impressive 21 points (12 goals, 9 assists) in his debut season, drawing the attention of top clubs.
La Liga debut for Real against Real Sociedad?
Initially, there were reports of interest from Liverpool, before Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain entered the race—only to withdraw, much to everyone’s annoyance. In the final stretch, Real Madrid flexed its muscles and presented Leipzig with the most attractive transfer package. The 150-million-euro transfer announced by President Florentino Pérez ahead of his reelection may fall “just short” of that figure. RB Leipzig also held a strong negotiating position given Diomande’s contract, which runs through the summer of 2030.
He says he is leaving Leipzig full of gratitude. “I was able to establish myself in one of Europe’s best leagues, earn my spot on the Ivory Coast national team, and represent my country on the biggest stage possible—the World Cup. None of this would have been possible without RB Leipzig, and for that I will always be grateful,” Diomande explains: “The move to Real Madrid is the fulfillment of a childhood dream for me. I am all the more grateful to the officials at RB Leipzig for making this move possible despite my ongoing contract.”
In Madrid, Diomande’s tremendous speed could help complete a trio—centered around Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Junior, who is currently being courted by Arsenal—that could become a feared force in Europe.
So far, Diomande has played in ten La Liga matches (scoring two goals). He hopes to score his first goal for Real as early as August 26, when the Royals host Pellegrino Matarazzo and his Copa del Rey champions from Real Sociedad in their delayed season opener.
