Wehen Wiesbaden won its final preseason match ahead of the start of the third division season, defeating FC Bayern 2-1. After falling behind at halftime, the substitutions of Vincent Kompany brought a breath of fresh air—ultimately, the record champions had only themselves to blame for the loss.
With Brandt, Hercher, and Karweina, all three new signings from Wehen Wiesbaden made it into the starting lineup, which faced an FC Bayern side fielding players ranging from the U-19 to the U-17 teams in the final warm-up match.
Early lead by Ati Allah
Unsurprisingly, it was the third-division side—on the verge of the season opener—that played with more structure after a disjointed start. However, the lead came about due to a double blunder by FCB: first, a mistake in build-up play, then a failed save by the goalkeeper on Ati Allah’s not-too-well-placed shot (10th minute).
The Munich youngsters—now playing with a bit more purpose—frequently made their way into the final third afterward, but the only real danger came from Della Rovere’s free kick (17th minute). The visitors were then lucky that Karweina couldn’t capitalize on Pavlic’s misplaced pass from long range, as the ball flew centimeters over the crossbar (22nd minute).
Bayern’s young talents played with great enthusiasm, but their teamwork faltered in many areas. Bayern made up for some of their passing errors with their determination and, toward the end of the first half, at least put the Hessians under defensive pressure on a few occasions.
Kompany makes adjustments, Bischof scores
Kompany sent several pros onto the field at the restart; Bayern took control of the game with plenty of possession, and the faster passing pace posed some challenges for SVWW—and overwhelmed Janitzek following Binder’s dribble, resulting in a penalty kick that Bischof converted (57th minute).
Earlier, however, Kalem could have made it 2–0 but missed the chance (56′). It was one of the third-division side’s increasingly rare attacking opportunities; defensively, they generally handled their tasks well as the match progressed, partly because Bayern’s offensive momentum had subsided.
Schleimer capitalizes on Ulreich’s mistake
There were no scoring chances for quite some time (with the exception of a free kick by Bischof in the 82nd minute), but Wehen Wiesbaden had the luck on their side: Ulreich couldn’t hold onto Bogicevic’s shot, and Schleimer capitalized to make it 2–1.
In two weeks, on Saturday (August 8, 2 p.m.), SVWW will face Preußen Münster in its Third Division opener, while Bayern will continue its series of preseason friendlies as early as this coming Thursday (6 p.m.) at FC Rottach-Egern.
