Noma Noha Akugue prevails in an all-German matchup and advances to the round of 16. Two other German players are eliminated.
Professional tennis player Noma Noha Akugue and Germany’s No. 2, Tamara Korpatsch, have successfully navigated their opening matches at the WTA tournament in Hamburg. In an all-German matchup against Valentina Steiner, the 2023 finalist prevailed 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 and advances to the round of 16.
Korpatsch, ranked 81st in the world, benefited at her home tournament from her opponent Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva (Andorra) retiring due to injury with the score at 4-6, 7-5, 1-0; her next opponent in the round of 16 is Julia Stusek (Rheinfelden). Mona Barthel had been eliminated earlier. Jule Niemeier has also been eliminated.
Tennis: Niemeier Eliminated
Niemeier, a former Wimbledon quarterfinalist who has slipped to No. 566 in the world rankings, fought her way through qualifying but lost to Argentina’s Maria Carlé in the first round 5–7, 2–6 in the first round. The 26-year-old from Dortmund celebrated her last victory on the tour in April 2025.
Noha Akugue, who achieved her best result on the WTA Tour by reaching the final three years ago, is competing in the tournament in her hometown of Hamburg for the fourth time.
Hamburg: Noha Akugue to Face Bondar
In the round of 16, the 22-year-old from Reinbek will face off against fourth-seeded Anna Bondar once again. She was eliminated by the Hungarian in the first round last year.
Mona Barthel (36), who, like Niemeier, had to make her way through qualifying, lost this morning to Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva 2-6, 6-7 (5-7).
