Newcastle Outmaneuvered: Liverpool Snatches Munoz

As expected, Spain’s Euro 2020 player Victor Munoz is heading to the Premier League this summer—but not to Newcastle United, rather to Liverpool FC.

Where does Victor Munoz’s future lie? This question has been on everyone’s mind in the streets of Pamplona over the past few weeks. After a stellar season for CA Osasuna, which had narrowly avoided relegation from La Liga (tied on points with relegated RCD Mallorca), it was widely expected that a European powerhouse would trigger the buyout clause in Munoz’s contract, which runs through 2030.

And that’s exactly what happened: Munoz is moving to the Premier League, as expected. But despite advanced negotiations, it wasn’t Newcastle United—which is said to have been courting the 22-year-old for days—that ultimately secured his signature, but rather Liverpool FC.

According to consistent media reports, the Reds are paying the stipulated 40 million euros—presumably in two installments—to pry Muñoz away from La Liga. The 1.73-meter-tall attacking player, who can be deployed flexibly in various attacking positions, had only moved from Real Madrid’s B team to Osasuna last summer for just five million euros. The Royals, who stand to profit handsomely thanks to a resale share, reportedly do not hold a buyback clause.

In his first La Liga season, however, the late bloomer made a lasting impression at Osasuna—where he has become the club’s new record sale—and proved himself ready for bigger challenges. The right-footed player contributed six goals and two assists in 36 league appearances; in the Copa del Rey, he was directly involved in four goals across two matches.

Iraola’s Ace in the Hole – Impressive Spanish Debut

At Liverpool, where sporting director Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards (CEO of football at Fenway Sports Group) worked intensively on the deal, Muñoz is reportedly signing a six-year contract running through June 30, 2032.

Muñoz also had an advocate in his compatriot Andoni Iraola, who is making his first transfer as Liverpool’s new head coach with the Spaniard. For now, Iraola will be hoping that Muñoz gets through the summer unscathed.

Fitting for Munoz’s meteoric rise is the fact that he is currently with the Spanish national team at the World Cup. In his international debut against Serbia (3–0) at the end of March, Munoz scored his first goal for La Selección just nine minutes after coming on as a substitute.

Now, a delegation from Liverpool FC has traveled specifically to the Spanish team’s training camp in Atlanta to conduct Munoz’s medical exam. Starting this summer, the new signing is expected to help offset the weakening of the offense—including the departure of fan favorite Mohamed Salah and the long-term absence of Hugo Ekitiké (torn Achilles tendon).
