With a three-set victory over the former Wimbledon semifinalist, the player from Kempen advances to the quarterfinals.
Professional tennis player Daniel Altmaier pulled off an upset at the tournament in Halle/Westphalia and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Terra Wortmann Open for the first time with a victory over grass-court specialist Hubert Hurkacz. The 27-year-old from Kempen defeated the former Wimbledon finalist from Poland 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in a thrilling match, reaching the quarterfinals for the third time this year.
Altmaier will now face either the fourth-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev or Terence Atmane (France) for a spot in the semifinals. At least one other German will reach the quarterfinals in Halle: Alexander Zverev will face Yannick Hanfmann in the round of 16 on Thursday.
Hurkacz, an excellent grass-court player who won in Halle in 2022 and lost the 2024 final to Jannick Sinner, put Altmaier under serious pressure early on. Starting in the second set, however, the German really found his rhythm and delivered one of his best performances on the fast surface.
