Christian Eriksen sent shockwaves through the football world with his second collapse on the field. Now, the Danish player has spoken out in a statement.
The shock still runs deep, but Wolfsburg and Denmark’s Christian Eriksen has apparently recovered well from his latest collapse on the field—and spoke out about it in a statement on Instagram roughly 24 hours later. “I want everyone to know that I’m doing well and that I’m at home with my family,” wrote the 34-year-old.
Eriksen did not see any parallels to the incident at Euro 2021, when he had to be resuscitated right in the stadium. A pacemaker was implanted to allow Eriksen to continue his career. On Sunday evening, the device was activated; Eriksen quickly regained consciousness and was even able to walk on his own to an ambulance, which took him to a hospital in Odense, the venue of the match.
“Spending time with my family”
Eriksen explained that “the pulse from the pacemaker is very stressful for me and my family.” Nevertheless, it “did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I need it.” Eriksen also wanted to assure everyone that the situation was different from five years ago. “I feel good and my recovery has already begun,” Eriksen said. He added: “Right now, I’m focusing on my recovery, spending time with my family, going on vacation, and playing soccer with my kids.”
Earlier, the Danish Football Association (DBU) had already published a statement from the national team’s doctor, Morten Boesen. “I spoke with Christian this morning and he is doing well. He is with his family and in good spirits. He is expected to be discharged soon and return home,” the statement read.
Eriksen has received messages of support from many quarters, including, of course, his current club, Wolfsburg. Following Eriksen’s collapse on Sunday evening, VfL “immediately contacted the Danish national team’s team doctor, who provided us with comprehensive information,” explained Dieter Hecking, VfL’s new sporting director. “We remain in close contact, including directly with Christian.”
