Omlin Returns to FC Basel

It’s been an open secret for days: Jonas Omlin is returning to FC Basel. Now the club has officially announced the transfer.

Jonas Omlin is returning to the Super League. The goalkeeper is moving from Borussia Mönchengladbach to FC Basel, returning to his former club after six years abroad. He has signed a three-year contract with FCB through 2029.

After suffering several injuries, Omlin lost his starting spot at Borussia Mönchengladbach to Moritz Nicolas. The Swiss player spent the last six months on loan at Bayer Leverkusen. However, he did not see any playing time there, instead serving as a backup for Jonas Blaswich.

Omlin was highly regarded at Borussia Mönchengladbach, as reflected in his farewell statement: “Jonas’s time at Borussia was unfortunately marked by many injuries. The fact that he was still captain of Borussia at times proves his good character and his commitment to our club. We wholeheartedly wish him all the best so that he can once again show in Basel what he is capable of on the field,” said Borussia’s Head of Sports, Rouven Schröder.

Stocker looks forward to his leadership qualities

Valentin Stocker, the sporting director of the first team, is pleased with the successful transfer: “We are very happy about the return of Jonas Omlin, with whom we have been in contact for quite some time. Jonas has already proven, both before and during his time abroad, that he is far more than just a strong presence in goal for a team: He brings leadership qualities both on and off the field, works with the utmost professionalism at all times, and is happy to take on responsibility.” Stocker also addresses the goalkeeper’s injury history and hopes that Omlin remains injury-free and can realize his full potential.

The player himself is also pleased with the successful return: “It feels a bit like coming home to me, and I’m incredibly excited to see the great fans at the Joggeli again. I have so many positive memories of FCB.” He is now looking forward to his return and wants to compete for titles.
