Alex Marquez is on the mend after his surgery—photos show him smiling during a video call with his team—He’ll be heading home on Monday
Good news from the Hospital General de Catalunya: Alex Marquez has successfully undergone surgery on his broken right collarbone following his serious crash at the MotoGP race in Barcelona.
The collarbone fracture was stabilized with a plate. The surgery went well. Alex Marquez will fly back to Madrid later on Monday afternoon.
It should be noted that he sustained another injury: a minor fracture of the C7 cervical vertebra, which, however, did not require surgery, as the doctors initially opted for natural healing.
Regarding this injury, “further examinations will be conducted this week,” as the Gresini team announced in a press release on Sunday evening.
Alex Marquez will now begin his recovery process at home. A precise timeline is not yet available, so we will have to wait and see how things develop in the coming days.
Photos on his Instagram profile also showed that the 30-year-old is doing well under the circumstances. Alex Marquez posted a new update with three photos from the hospital on Monday afternoon.
In them, he can be seen video chatting with members of his team. He is also smiling at the camera. The Gresini team is still at the track, as an official test day is taking place there on Monday.
Only Fermin Aldeguer is riding for the Italian team during this test. On Sunday, he secured his first podium finish of the season with a second-place finish. However, the joy was dampened by his teammate’s injury.
Alex Marquez suffered a serious crash on the twelfth lap of the Barcelona race. Pedro Acosta’s KTM suddenly stopped accelerating in front of him. Alex Marquez was right behind him and had no chance to avoid the collision.
