Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has made NBA history once again. According to ESPN, the Oklahoma City Thunder superstar has been named Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive year.
With his second consecutive MVP title, Gilgeous-Alexander now joins an exclusive group of just 14 players in NBA history to have achieved this feat. At the same time, the 27-year-old is the first guard since Stephen Curry (2015 and 2016) to win the award in two consecutive years.
The Thunder star’s statistics impressively underscore his historic season. Despite numerous injuries on the roster, Gilgeous-Alexander led Oklahoma City to 64 wins and the best record in the league. In doing so, the Canadian made history on multiple occasions: He is the first guard ever to average at least 30 points on over 55 percent shooting.
In addition, SGA joined Michael Jordan in another exclusive category. Both are the only players in NBA history to average at least 30 points, five assists, and over 50 percent from the field over four seasons. Furthermore, Gilgeous-Alexander did not score fewer than 20 points in a single game all season—a feat previously achieved only by Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor.
