Thanks to Timo Werner, the San Jose Earthquakes secured a flattering victory in the MLS and maintained their top position ahead of Thomas Müller & Co. Other Germans also scored.
Timo Werner has extended his short goalscoring streak and led the San Jose Earthquakes to another victory in the MLS. On Sunday night (CEST), he scored a brace to give his team a 3-2 win at St. Louis City SC, although the result was extremely flattering.
After San Jose’s early lead through Preston Jud (8th), the hosts created a flurry of chances, but were repeatedly thwarted by substitute keeper Daniel, their own inability or the aluminum. Marcel Hartel also missed twice from promising positions.
After the break, the former FC Köln, Union Berlin, Arminia Bielefeld and FC St. Pauli professional successfully initiated the deserved turnaround by setting up ex-Augsburg player Sergio Cordova to make it 1:1 (51′) and then scoring himself two minutes later to make it 2:1 (53′). But then Werner suddenly made his presence felt: First he converted a penalty full of conviction to make it 2-2 (69′), before he put a cross into the net with a direct shot (83′).
Müller sets up Whitecaps victory – Mukhtar & Co. take advantage of Inter draw
With 9:21 shots on goal at the end, it was something of a lesson from the 30-year-old for the inefficient Hartel & Co. While he himself has now scored in three games in a row, the Earthquakes won for the sixth time in a row, the ninth time in the tenth game of the season. They thus defended first place in the Western Conference ahead of the Vancouver Whitecaps, who stayed within three points with a 3-1 win over the Colorado Rapids and still have a game in hand.
Thomas Müller was not on the scoresheet this time, but set up the first goal through Cheikh Sabaly (7th). Brian White provided the other goals for the Canadians (23rd/85th), who deserved their victory.
In the East, defending champions Inter Miami were held to a 1-1 draw in the top match against New England Revolution, which was secured by January newcomer German Berterame (76′). Nashville SC took advantage of this and moved three points clear at the top. Hany Mukhtar scored the opener in the 4-2 win over Charlotte FC and collected the assist for the final goal from MLS top scorer Sam Surridge.
