Sporting wise, things are going well for Marvin Ducksch in the English lower division at Birmingham City, but now the former international striker may have maneuvered himself offside. The 32-year-old is alleged to have been involved in a multi-vehicle accident while drunk and will have to answer for this in court. His club has already drawn the first conclusions.
In the summer, Marvin Ducksch left SV Werder Bremen and moved to Birmingham City in the Championship. In sporting terms, his move proved to be a direct hit, with the striker contributing ten goals and two assists to the promoted side’s mid-table position in the English second division. Now, however, the 32-year-old is facing great adversity. The former German international striker (two caps) is facing a charge of drink-driving in the UK.
“The club can confirm that Ducksch has been charged in connection with an offense of driving under the influence of alcohol,” Birmingham City announced on Tuesday via the short messaging service X and then spared further details. Everything else will be dealt with internally, so City do not plan to make any further comment at this time, they added – with one exception. “Marvin would like to apologize to his teammates, staff and supporters of the club and takes full responsibility for his actions,” the second division club continued.
Arrested and released on bail
According to the BBC, Ducksch was allegedly involved in a three-car crash near the club’s training ground on the A3400 near Henley-in-Arden at around 10.30pm on Easter Monday. In this context, he is also said to have been provisionally arrested before being released on bail.
However, the matter is not yet off the table, as there is still legal repercussions to come. After being charged at the beginning of the week, Ducksch is due to appear at Warwickshire Magistrates’ Court in Leamington Spa on Wednesday, May 20, where his case will be heard by the highest court.
The incident has already had sporting consequences for Ducksch, who has featured in 35 competitive matches for Birmingham this season and is a regular starter. The 32-year-old was left out of the squad for the 2-0 win over Wrexham on Sunday.
Certainly not an easy decision for coach Chris Davies to make, as the ex-Bremer is currently in great form: seven goals in the last 16 games speaks for itself. City have not announced when Ducksch will return for the Blues.
