Flying Ants Cause Havoc at Wimbledon as Wozniacki Crashes Out

The first Wednesday at Wimbledon was all about Caroline Wozniacki crashing out amid an invasion of flying ants at Wimbledon. The current Australian Open champion could be heard complaining to the umpire about the problem, asking for something to be done about the insects. She was heard saying “I want to be here to focus on tennis, not eating bugs.” So we’re guessing Wozniacki will not be applying to go on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, if she does not like eating bugs.

Temperatures high in London

The UK has been experiencing hotter than usual weather, which is why flying ants are swarming at Wimbledon. The England football team recently had their own battle with pests in Russia at the World Cup where they were plagued with midges and you can see how much it affected performances as they were constantly trying to swat them away.

Wozniacki refused to put her shock defeat to Ekaterina Makarova down to the Wimbledon flying ants but you could see how irritated they had made her. They proved to be a real distraction as she went out 4-6, 6-1, 5-7 to her Russian opponent.

Five of top eight women’s seeds out of Wimbledon already

This means that five of the top eight women’s seeds are out before the third round, as Wozniacki followed Stephens, Svitolina, Kvitova and Garcia out of the championship. The Danish player had been enjoying a good year, after winning the Australian Open and was hoping for a good run in Wimbledon. After picking up her first ever Grand Slam in Melbourne she had returned to No.1 at the end of January, before later dropping to 2nd.

She came into Wimbledon in great form, having just won the Nature Valley International at Eastbourne and it was looking like 2018 could be her year. Nobody was expecting the 2nd seed in the ladies singles to go out so early so maybe the flying ants were just too annoying to concentrate properly.
