Hanfmann’s title dream shattered

Yannick Hanfmann is close—but his dream of winning the tournament remains unfulfilled for now.

Professional tennis player Yannick Hanfmann missed out on his first ATP Tour title for the third time. The Karlsruhe native lost the final in Santiago de Chile to Italian Luciano Darderi 6-7 (6-8), 5-7. Hanfmann had already reached finals on his favorite surface, clay, in Gstaad in 2017 and Kitzbühel in 2020, but he will have to continue waiting for a tournament victory even after this week in Chile.

ATP: Hanfmann wins over $60,000 in prize money

Despite the defeat, Hanfmann can count the tournament in the South American metropolis as a success. In the semifinals, he had surprisingly beaten top-seeded Argentine Francisco Cerúndolo, but in the final, Darderi proved to be too strong. The German Davis Cup player had already lost to the world number 21 on clay in Cordoba, Argentina, in 2023 and 2024. Hanfmann (34) takes home $62,115 in prize money and 165 points, climbing from 81st to 65th in the rankings.
He will continue his campaign at the Masters in Indian Wells, California, on hard court. However, Hanfmann will have to go through qualifying there, having narrowly missed out on the main draw.
