Florian Wirtz must continue to sit out due to back problems. Liverpool head coach Arne Slot does not expect the German international to be available for the weekend’s match against West Ham. “It’s always disappointing when a player is unavailable, and I didn’t expect that after last week. But that’s how it can be sometimes, and unfortunately this time it’s not for the better,” the 47-year-old commented on Wirtz’s absence.
Last week, Wirtz complained of back problems during warm-up and therefore missed the Reds’ 1-0 win in Nottingham. “Unfortunately, he was unavailable last week and this week – that’s really disappointing for him and for us, as he has been playing really, really, really well lately,” Slot said. The coach was unable to give an exact timeframe for the creative player’s absence.
Uncertain how long Wirtz will be out
“To be honest, I don’t know right now,” said the Dutchman. “It’s definitely a shame. He has rhythm, of course, and in my opinion, it’s a great achievement on his part that he’s stayed fit for so long, because he had to make the step up from his previous club to Liverpool, to the Premier League, and the fact that he’s stayed fit says a lot about the mentality and work ethic of a player and the performance team.”
