Tennis player Mona Barthel suffered a defeat on her return to the WTA Tour after almost a year and a half.
The 35-year-old from Bad Segeberg lost 6-7 (4-7), 4-6 to Czech Linda Fruhvirtova in the opening round of the tournament in Ostrava, Czechia, after a hard-fought battle.

Tamara Korpatsch, on the other hand, survived the first round. The Hamburg native defeated Anna Siskova (Czechia) 6-4, 6-4 and will now face second-seeded Colombian Emiliana Arango in the round of 16.
Barthel had qualified for the tournament, returning to the main draw of a WTA tournament for the first time since the end of July 2024. Since then, she had mainly played in second-tier events and unsuccessfully attempted to qualify for Grand Slam tournaments.
