Not in Vigo’s squad: Bayern striker Zaragoza set for loan move to Roma

Bryan Zaragoza is apparently looking for a change of scenery. The winger, who is on loan from Bayern Munich to Celta Vigo, apparently wants to move to Roma in Italy—much to the regret of his coach.

The past few weeks have not been bad for Celta Vigo. In the Europa League, the Galician team finished 14th thanks to four points from their last two games and will now face Olympiacos Piraeus in the play-offs. In La Liga, too, the eighth-placed team has recently gained ground in the battle for international places. But now someone who has not really contributed much to the rather impressive season is dampening the mood. Bayern player Bryan Zaragoza has played 1,420 minutes for his loan club so far, scoring two goals and providing four assists in 26 competitive games. In La Liga, the 24-year-old finally broke his duck two weeks ago in the 3-0 win over Rayo Vallecano, when he converted a penalty he had won himself.

Ten appearances and twelve substitutions also serve as proof that Zaragoza does not exactly appear indispensable for Vigo. Apparently, the three-time Spanish international has other plans and wants to terminate the loan. His new destination: AS Roma. For their part, the Giallorossi want to loan Zaragoza for €2 million and, according to Corriere della Sera, also secure a purchase option worth €13 million.

Vigo coach reports “open conversation”

The transfer is apparently already quite far along, as Zaragoza is no longer in the squad for Vigo’s game at Getafe on Sunday (6 p.m.). “He spoke very openly with me,” said coach Claudio Giraldez. He said that “everything is still very fresh” and the process is “still open.” However, regarding the squad spot, “a decision had to be made, and we made that decision. I think it was a last-minute situation for everyone, including him.”

Giraldez now hopes that Zaragoza will still decide in favor of Vigo, “but the transfer market is another matter. I understand the world I live in. This isn’t a video game; I can’t just pick the players I like best or like least.”

Only seven games for Bayern

Zaragoza’s contract in Munich runs until 2029. However, after signing for FCB in February 2024, he only played seven Bundesliga games (no goals) before being loaned to CA Osasuna for the 2024/25 season. Even after that, the record champions had no use for the speedy dribbler and loaned him to Vigo, which even has an option to buy. Now he could be loaned out for the third time in just two years—and Zaragoza could play in the Europa League again. Roma, in eighth place, has even qualified directly for the round of 16 and can register a maximum of three new eligible players until February 5.
