Yamaha rider Alex Rins celebrates podium finish at ice rally in Andorra

Alex Rins is making headlines away from MotoGP: the Yamaha rider drove straight onto the podium at an ice rally in Andorra, putting himself in contention for 2026.

Alex Rins last stood on the podium in MotoGP when he won in Austin in 2023. However, the Yamaha rider has now made a sporting statement away from the traditional racetrack. The Spaniard took part in an ice rally in Andorra last weekend.

There, he drove straight onto the podium. At the Circuit Andorra, Rins finished third in a GSeries race, proving his versatility on four wheels as well.

Rins then shared his impressions on social media. “Incredible experience on the ice at the Circuit Andorra.
Many thanks to Geo Baliza and Nil Solans for inviting me. P3 achieved,” wrote the Yamaha rider.
Nil Solans, Junior WRC and WRC3 champion and one of the established greats in rallying, was also among those taking part in the event.

Rins faces tenth MotoGP season

For Rins, the ice racing trip was part of his preparation for the 2026 MotoGP season, which is a special one for him: the 30-year-old is entering his tenth year in the premier class and is also contesting his third season for the Yamaha factory team.

After a difficult 2025 season, which he finished in 19th place in the overall standings with only 68 points, Rins is hoping for a fresh start. His best result last year was seventh place at the Australian Grand Prix, while teammate Fabio Quartararo finished ninth in the world championship with 201 points.

Yamaha is pinning its hopes on the completely redesigned V4 motorcycle, which made its debut at the end of 2025 in wildcard appearances with Augusto Fernandez. The new concept is intended to help the team catch up with the leaders again.

The focus is now on the official test rides: the first shakedown test will take place in Sepang from January 29 to 31. Rins is also expected to be there. This is because Yamaha is eligible to compete as a manufacturer with concession status D – another important step on the road to the upcoming MotoGP season.
