After three Ballon d’Or awards: Aitana completes her FIFA hat trick

The string of personal trophies for Aitana Bonmati continues unabated. The Spanish player, who is currently injured, has now been named FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year for the third time.

Where other professionals have a trophy cabinet, Aitana now needs a room of her own. The 27-year-old from FC Barcelona won the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year award for the third time on Tuesday evening in Doha. She had already been named the winner in 2023 and 2024. This completes Aitana’s next personal hat trick: she also won the Ballon d’Or every year from 2023 to 2025. For the fifth time in a row, both awards go to the same person. In 2021 and 2022, Alexia Putellas, Aitana’s club and national team colleague, won both awards.

Five-month break due to a broken fibula

There were no German players or Bundesliga professionals among the 17 nominees, but there were five Spanish players and five FC Barcelona professionals. Aitana celebrated the national treble with the Catalans in the 2024/25 season, only losing to Arsenal in the Champions League final.

Spain also finished second at the European Championship, losing to England on penalties in the final. Aitana missed her attempt there. Both at the European Championship and in the Champions League, UEFA named the central midfielder the most valuable player of the competition.

So the next personal trophy in Doha came as no surprise to anyone, but it could offer some consolation to the title holder. Due to a broken fibula, she is currently sidelined for five months and therefore missed the second leg of the Nations League final, which her teammates won 3-0 against Germany.
