Martin Schmidt took time off to care for his father. Now the Valais native openly admits that he wants to return to the sidelines.
Martin Schmidt resigned from 1. FSV Mainz 05 because his father needed him. The then sporting director of the Bundesliga club returned to Switzerland to care for his father. His father is now doing a little better and is being cared for at home, as Schmidt revealed to blue Sport, and the former Bundesliga coach wants to return to the sidelines. The 58-year-old doesn’t want to rule anything out: “It’s not a wish list. But I don’t want to rule anything out. But ultimately, you always have to have dreams.“
Schmidt is particularly attracted to two southern countries: ”Well, I always thought that my approach from Germany and Switzerland, which is athletically intensive, could also be implemented in the south. Yes, I dream of Spain and Italy! My backpack is full. I was a Bundesliga coach, a sporting director.” However, Schmidt also admits candidly that he lacks the language skills in these countries. He could possibly give a fiery speech, but a conversation with journalists would be impossible. A position in Switzerland would also be conceivable for Schmidt. He does not even want to rule out the Challenge League, because one must not forget that he has not been active as a coach since 2020.
