Convincing victory for Lys

Eva Lys gets off to a successful start in her last tournament of the year. There are also German victories in Jiujiang.

Tennis player Eva Lys got off to a convincing start at the WTA tournament in Hong Kong. The 23-year-old from Hamburg easily lived up to her role as favorite, defeating Russia’s Kristiana Sidorova 6-0, 6-3 to advance to the round of 16 in the $275,094 250 tournament. There she will face former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez (Canada) or Wang Xiyu from China. This is Lys’ last tournament of the year. The WTA season finale for the top eight players starts in Riyadh on Saturday. Lys, ranked 527th in the world, only struggled at times in the second set on Monday and took her second match point to win after 1 hour and 11 minutes of play. Meanwhile, in Jiujiang, China, there will be an all-German duel between Ella Seidel and Tamara Korpatsch in the round of 16. Seidel, who is in good form, won her opening match against France’s Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah confidently 6-4, 6-3. Korpatsch benefited from the injury-related retirement of Russia’s Polina Kudermetova when the score was 3-0 in the first set.
