Legendary WWE duo make emotional farewell

The Dudley Boyz and the Hardys fought a nostalgic final match against each other at TNA Bound For Glory – for one of the two tag teams, it was their farewell performance.

One of the world’s most legendary wrestling duos is history – and with it, one of the greatest tag team feuds in history.

Twenty-six years after their first duel at WWE, the Dudley Boyz and the Hardys fought their final battle against each other on Saturday night. At Bound For Glory, the annual highlight of WWE’s partner league TNA, the old rivals faced each other once again in a tables match – before the Dudleys emotionally retired after their last joint performance.

Dudleys vs. Hardys: A legendary WWE feud

The Dudleys (Bubba Ray and D-Von), also known as Team 3D (Devon and Brother or Bully Ray) in TNA, are one of the most decorated tag teams of the modern era: Formed in 1996 (!) in Paul Heyman’s groundbreaking cult league ECW, the two WWE Hall of Famers held the tag team titles of ECW, WWE, WCW (after its acquisition by WWE), TNA, and NJPW in Japan, and competed in well over 1,000 matches together.

Their history is closely linked to Matt and Jeff Hardy: From 1999 onwards, the Hardys and the Dudleys were part of a groundbreaking three-way feud with Edge and Christian (recently reunited as Adam Copeland and Christian Cage at WWE rival AEW) in what was then the WWF. The sextet competed in the first TLC matches (Tables, Ladders & Chairs) and thus defined a new standard of spectacle that continues to shape the wrestling world to this day.

Twenty-three years after the last meeting between the Hardys and the Dudleys at WWE – and 11 years after a small revival at TNA – the final act has now come to pass.

Emotional final act at TNA

In front of an official crowd of just under 7,800 in Lowell, Massachusetts – a record attendance for TNA in North America – the Hardys and Dudleys fought for tag team gold one last time under the motto “One Final Table”: at stake were the tag team titles of TNA and the WWE development squad NXT, both recently won by the Hardys.

Matt (now 51), Jeff (48), D-Von (53), and Bubba (54) were naturally unable to reach their former athletic level, but there were still plenty of daring maneuvers, emotion, excitement, and nostalgic surprises. The Dudleys were accompanied to the ring unannounced by their slight third “brother,” former ECW and WWE cult figure Spike Dudley.

In the end, it was inevitable—especially since D-Von had already announced that Bound For Glory would be his final match: The Hardys won by throwing Bubba through a table at the end. After the fight, both teams hugged each other, and in a symbolic act, the Dudleys presented the Hardys with their wrestling boots to confirm the end of their career as a duo.

In the actual main event of the show, former AEW wrestler Mike Santana later won the TNA World Title, dethroning the previous champion, Trick Williams, who is actually under contract with WWE.
