The decision will only be made at the DTM finale in Hockenheim: Nine drivers still have a mathematical chance of being crowned 2025 DTM champions this season.
Who will take the DTM crown? At the final in Hockenheim, a total of nine drivers still have a mathematical chance of winning this year’s title. Landgraf Mercedes driver Lucas Auer has the best cards, leading the overall standings by seven points. But Jules Gounon (Winward Mercedes) is still in the title race in ninth place: The Frenchman is 29 points behind his AMG brand colleague Auer and can make up the deficit because a total of 56 points are still up for grabs at the final in Hockenheim. The problem is that Gounon is not the only driver who wants to catch up. A total of nine drivers from six nations still have a chance of winning the title ahead of the decisive weekend.
However, it is not a record in the DTM’s 40-year history for nine drivers to still be in contention for the title going into the final race. In the 2022 DTM season, when Schubert BMW driver Sheldon van der Linde came out on top, ten drivers still had a mathematical chance of winning the title.
Mercedes-AMG with the best chances
Mercedes-AMG is probably the favorite going into the race with three title contenders, while Porsche and BMW are each represented by two drivers. Ferrari and Lamborghini are competing as lone warriors. Audi, McLaren, Ford, and Aston Martin have already been eliminated from the battle for this year’s DTM crown.
While Auer, Pepper, Engel, Güven, Aitken, and Gounon are aiming for their first DTM title, three drivers are already former champions going into the grand finale: Preining is fighting for his second title, Wittmann wants his third success, and for Rast it would already be his fourth title win.
A total of 56 points are still up for grabs on the two race days in Hockenheim. In addition to the 25 points for winning the race, there are also three points for each of the two pole positions in qualifying. Theoretically, Auer could already secure the title on Saturday.
To do so, he would have to extend his lead over his closest rival to at least 29 points. Given the large number of title contenders and the tight field, this seems rather unlikely, so the decision for the 2025 DTM crown will probably only be made in the final race on Sunday.
