Even before the playoffs: Busquets announces retirement

A key figure of Spain’s golden generation will soon be hanging up his soccer boots: Sergio Busquets (37) announced his impending retirement in an emotional video late last night. One last mission remains.

It had already been hinted at, but since Friday it has been confirmed: Sergio Busquets will hang up his boots after this MLS season. “These will be my last months on the pitch. I am retiring very happy, proud, fulfilled, and above all grateful,” the now 37-year-old wrote on his social media channels. Attached is an almost three-minute video in which Busquets emotionally looks back on his career. Unsurprisingly, the eternal midfield strategist calls FC Barcelona the “club of my life,” which made his “childhood dreams” come true. He said he will “never forget” many moments at Camp Nou. Busquets was part of a golden Spanish generation that celebrated the World Cup title in 2010 and defended the European Championship in 2012. Busquets played over 600 games in his career alongside Lionel Messi alone, who is frequently seen in the video clip. Those “friends” on the pitch meant the most to Busquets.

The crowning glory of his farewell?

With Barcelona, Busquets won nine Spanish championships, seven cup titles, and three Champions League titles. He also played a central role in the 2014/15 treble season.

Since 2023, Busquets has been playing in the US—alongside Messi at Inter Miami, of course. Last year, the Spaniard won his first overseas title with the Supporters Shield. However, the crowning glory of his career is set to follow soon: Miami has already secured its ticket to the playoffs, and Busquets wants to bow out with the MLS title in December. A wish that Messi would probably be only too happy to fulfill.
