Ludwigsburg wins overtime thriller – Crailsheim misses out on surprise win

In the Bundesliga clash between the Frankfurt Skyliners and Ludwigsburg, MHP RIESEN narrowly prevailed 101-96 after a hard-fought game and overtime. At the same time, second division team Crailsheim missed out on a surprise win against promoted team Jena, losing 78-85.

Frankfurt and Ludwigsburg battle it out in thriller

In an exciting first-round game of the BBL Cup, the Skyliners Frankfurt narrowly lost. The Hessians lost to MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg 96-101 after overtime. After a largely balanced game, a three-pointer in the final seconds saved the Skyliners and sent the game into overtime, but there the visitors set the tone and consistently took advantage of their chances. William Christmas was the top scorer for Frankfurt with 22 points (9 assists), while Stefan Smith led the visitors with 35. The Ludwigsburg team impressed overall with their composure in the decisive phase, securing their ticket to the round of 16.

The Skyliners will start the new BBL season on Sunday with a trip to EWE Baskets in Oldenburg. MHP RIESEN will not be back in action in Frankfurt until Friday.

Jena advances to the round of 16 after a hard-fought battle

Newcomers Science City Jena prevailed 85-78 at Hakro Merlins Crailsheim. Both teams were evenly matched for long stretches, with the ProA representatives leading by double digits at one point. It was only in the final quarter that the Bundesliga newcomers turned the game around and secured their place in the round of 16.

The decisive factor in the victory was the accuracy of Eric Washington (26) and Keith Braxton Jr. (22), who scored a combined 48 points. While Crailsheim held its own for a long time and proved to be a strong opponent at home, Jena prevailed in the end thanks to its stronger nerves in the final phase.

The newly promoted team will continue on Friday with the start of the new BBL season. Their opponent is none other than the reigning champions, FC Bayern Munich. Crailsheim will start the ProA season on Sunday (6 p.m.) at VfL Bochum.
