On Saturday, the super middleweight crown will be up for grabs in Las Vegas. The fight will be broadcast by Netflix.
Canelo Alvarez has already faced Floyd Mayweather in the ring and has fought 67 fights in two decades as a professional boxer – but this duel with Terence Crawford has a special appeal for the Mexican superstar.
“This will be one of the biggest fights of my career,” said Alvarez, who will box against the undefeated American for the super middleweight world championship crown on Saturday evening (local time) in Las Vegas.
Crawford (37) is considered the underdog—even though his record is sensationally good. He has won all 41 of his professional fights, 31 of them early, and he could become the first boxer ever to be the undisputed world champion in three weight classes. As the welterweight and super welterweight titleholder, he has now built up muscle mass to defeat Alvarez and become the undisputed super middleweight world champion as well.
Boxing spectacle: Alvarez aims for knockout victory
The 35-year-old Alvarez, who has 63 wins, two draws, and two losses (including against Mayweather in September 2013) on his record, is aiming for a knockout victory. “I’ll give it my all,” he promised. Even if he doesn’t win early, “I’ll show the world why I’m the best.”
In total, the two boxers have spent over 765 rounds in the ring without suffering a single knockdown.
According to media reports, Alvarez will earn up to $150 million for the fight, while Crawford will have to settle for “only” ten million. The pressure is on the Mexican, who is considered the favorite. Crawford is fine with that. “I feel great and I’m ready to shock the world,” he boasted:
“People underestimate me; they say I’ve only fought nobodies so far. On Saturday, I’ll show them what they’ve been missing.”
The spectacle will be broadcast by Netflix. Dana White, who has turned the MMA league UFC into a global brand, is promoting the fight with support from Saudi Arabia.
