Davis Cup captain suspended after altercation

Australian captain Lleyton Hewitt gets into an altercation with a doping control officer. However, the suspension will not begin until a later date.

Australia’s Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt has been suspended for two weeks after an altercation with a doping control officer.

As announced by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) following a decision by an independent arbitration panel on Wednesday, the former world number one must also pay a fine of 30,000 Australian dollars (around 17,000 euros).

Suspension begins at the end of September

The ITIA announced that the suspension will run from September 24 to October 7 so as not to punish Hewitt unfairly and to give him the opportunity to appeal. This has not yet happened.

The 44-year-old Hewitt will therefore be playing in Australia’s decisive match against Belgium this weekend to qualify for the final round in Bologna.

Hewitt denies the accusation

At the end of November last year, after the Davis Cup semifinal against Italy in Malaga, Hewitt pushed a volunteer anti-doping assistant after having had a brief altercation with the 60-year-old. The former Wimbledon and US Open champion denied the allegation and claimed self-defense, but without success.
