Chelsea FC has finalized the transfer of Alejandro Garnacho. The 21-year-old had no future at Manchester United, but he is still bringing the Red Devils a high transfer fee.
The second of five players who had been discarded has found a new employer. After Alejandro Garnacho was discarded by ManUnited coach Ruben Amorim in June and was no longer allowed to train with the team since the start of preseason, the 21-year-old has now joined Chelsea FC.
As the Blues announced on Saturday, the Argentine has signed a contract in London until the summer of 2032. According to media reports from England, Chelsea is transferring the equivalent of around €46 million to its Premier League rival. United is also said to have secured a ten percent resale share.
Signing his new contract with Chelsea was an “incredible moment for my family,” said Garnacho, who is joining the club world champions and, in his eyes, “the best team in the world.” He was already sitting in the stands during Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Fulham on Saturday.
Garnacho: To Manchester at 16, Premier League debut at 17
The Madrid-born attacking player moved from Atletico Madrid’s youth team to Manchester in the summer of 2020 at the age of 16. A year and a half later, in April 2022, he made his Premier League debut for the Red Devils against Chelsea.
Since then, the eight-time Argentine international has played 144 competitive games for ManUnited, scoring 26 goals and providing 22 assists. He played his last game for his former employer in the Europa League final last May, which Manchester lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur.
In the summer, however, he was dropped by head coach Ruben Amorim along with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia. Rashford subsequently moved to FC Barcelona, Garnacho will play for Chelsea in the future, and the other three are (still) under contract with ManUnited.
